eh, I mean, it's whatever...in the end, you still have plenty of time to trade that FA

Teams can't normally trade a newly signed free agent until after June 15 of the following season, unless the player gives written consent.
That's the real rule

if you wanna sign and flip a guy, you should be free to. no reason FA should only be for teams looking to win. Poor tanking team has to wait three months to flip a guy on a multi year deal, how sad see this is bs, bc the rule is way overinclusive if that's the concern. i sent out a ton of deals and didnt hit on many, so why shouldnt i be able to make the rational choice and prefer the money saved/young assets i can acquire? the way youre framing this its like you want a big overstep to protect competing teams in FA. and anyway, why shouldn't a new acquisition be a viable trade piece during the first three months of the season? because youre afraid of tanking teams signing and flipping guys? draftees, trade acquisitions, in house players can go at any time, and teams make all kinds of big moves during the season. it's not like the only -- or majority of -- instances of FAs changing teams before july 1 is tanking teams signing and trading guys. awful rule. the multiyear commitment is a serious enough check on the thing youre worried about.

say i signed ichiro, who like mike i was serious about signing, but failed to get kuroda and sanchez. my strategy failed and my best move is to keep at my rebuild. why is there a rule preventing me from doing that for half a season?

Because you committed to signing the guy and can still arrange a trade for July 1

It's 3 months not three years, and removing the rule results in far more teams going the flip route

not like you arent up against tanking rules also that force you to take fa seriously
i mean that's where i am right now. i made a serious push in fa, but missed on ichiro and kuroda. i should be allowed to move sanchez if i feel like it's wasted money/talent bc i'm not ready to compete.

I'd rather not go the contraction route, Erbes.

So because it is t a common occurrence with a three month deterrent, it wouldn't be a common occurrence after that...anybody think Mike really signed Ichiro to win?

imo a big problem here is that good gms are the more vocal ones and have made rules that protect good teams. a bad team should be able to fuck up your FA and use FA as a way to improve, sorry.
