The Expos might be setting a record here for shortest time in between moving their walls here, but management and ownership believed it just had to be done. Mainly because moving the fences in all the way to the minimum distances was a huge failure for the Expos. As they thought it would make Montreal a homerun hitters paradise and obviously attract more fans with a more exciting, higher scoring brand of baseball. However it was quite the opposite as the Expos offense struggled mightily to score runs in their ballpark when they weren’t hitting homeruns. After a brief hiatus the Expos GM has returned and has the team looking like they could make some noise in their division this season. They knew they weren’t going anywhere if they didn’t move their fences back closer to what they were before. With the new fence dimensions the Expos still hope to have their fair share of homeruns , but also make it much easier for singles, doubles and triples guys to get on base with the bigger ballpark. And as you can see from the breakdown, the rightfield fences will be 10 feet shorter than the leftfield fences. This is done to obviously give left-handed hitters a little more of an advantage when it comes to clearing the fences for a homerun. But also is done to make it harder on the majority of right handed hitters in the league. Among many other things the Expos main hope is that this rejuvenates the fans and the team and the Expos can get back on track.
