The Padres have shown this year that they are serious about putting a competitive team on the field. They were rewarded for taking a big risk by signing all 3 international fas and they struck gold when all three looked better than advertised. None of the 3 is still in San Diego having been traded for multiple pieces. The Padres have made numerous trades this year trying to get better.

The Padres have acquired Julio Enos, Chris Davis, Chris Coghlan and Yoenis Cespedes, all of which have a shot at 30 hrs this year. They have youngsters Charlie Tillon, Keon Bynum, Carl Angus and Donald Countess hoping to reach the show next year. They will add Patrick Corbin next year who will come to SD in an offseason trade to go with Jack Myler, Bud Norris and Duane Ford in the rotation. The bullpen will add Joel Morales and Phillipe Aumont to go with holdover Mickey Storey. Of course with Corbin, Myler and Norris in the rotations they might not need much by way of a bullpen because all three of them are more than capable of throwing a complete game any given start. They also have super stud Jose Fernandez but he is a couple of years off. The Padres have decided that their new team needs a new stadium. Well, not really a new stadium but a stadium renovation which is the next best thing. The idea is to try to bring in new fans and to bring old fans back to the ballpark. The Padres will be upgrading the seating and luxury boxes. The total cost of the renovation will be 80 million dollars though rumor has it that San diego has agreed to pay 40% of the construction cost so the Padres will only have to come up with 48 million dollars. The league offered to loan the money to the Padres and to let the Padres repay the money over four years but the Padres have already notified the league that they will pay the 48 million in cash. Over the last 2 years San Diego's fan interest has plummeted to 31 which is 20th in the league. That is the type of fan interest which can destroy a team's finances for years to come. It isn't only the finances which are at stake but rather the ability to convince quality players to come to San Diego; In fact many current Padres have threatened to leave if they can't put a winning team on the field. Management felt that building a stadium will help them improve their revenue situations which will help them put an improved team on the field and convince current players to stay in San Diego. There were also discussion about moving the fences but at this point the fences will stay where they are. There was also talk about building a new stadium but the Padres couldn't come up with enough cash to get it done and at this point they will have to make do with a stadium renovation. Will the Padres be able to put a product on the field to match their improved stadium? Will the old fans come back? Will new fans be convinced to come and see the new luxury boxes? The Padres have more questions than answers at this point and it will be interesting to see how things play out. See you at the ball park!!
