I wanted to highlight our epic trade frenzy. I’ll give an overall grade on how each team did with their trades and how they used their rewards. Trades that did not count towards the frenzy will not be reflected here. I’ll showcase what player packed their bags, and where they went. Won’t really include picks as it’s too much work unless 1st Rounders are involved. Finally, here are the West Divisions. Soooooo let’s go:
WEST
Anaheim Angels
Who’s New: SS Nick Punto and 2B Ruben Gotay
Who’s Gone: CF Andruw Jones and 3B Matthew Roten (A)
Best Trade: The Punto for Jones swap was a nice deal for both parties. Both have played extremely well for their respective clubs.
Worst Trade: Giving up Roten who game turned into a stud…obviously Greg didn’t have the ability to do it so this isn’t awful, BUT he could’ve maybe leveraged it into a better player. Who knows? Gotay is a nice player regardless.
Reward:
Grade: C-...Greg could've made some of his younger guys into better players if he would've gotten more trades done. His reign atop the AL West won't last long.
Oakland Athletics
Who’s New: 3B Alex Gordon, CF Brandon Barnes (AAA), 2B Dustin Ackley, SS Xander Bogaerts (A), MR Caleb Thielbar (AA), C James Brown (AAA)
Who’s Gone: SP Chase Anderson (AAA), CL Drake Britton (AA), C Christian Bethancourt (AAA), C Travis d'Arnaud (AAA), SS Dee Gordon (AAA), 3B Clifton Turner, 3B Mike Moustakas, SP Ubaldo Jimenez, SP Andrew Cashner (AAA), COL/BOS 2012 1st
Best Trade: Acquiring Alex Gordon…he’s a stud. He gave up d’Arnaud and Dee, but I’d be fine with that. Habes got nice value, but man oh man…I love Gordon.
Worst Trade: The Bogaerts deal. I would rather have Moustakas regardless. Another one was moving up a spot, and giving up the 14th pick as well. Not good value if you ask me.
Reward:
Grade: A-...looking back on this, a lot of the guys he used his rewards on are gone (Smith/Quentin). In the end, Broph is a top 4 GM here, and he knows how to get the job done. Strasburg and Derrico look great coming out of this, and with Taijuan Walker in the fold...this team has some Aces!
Seattle Mariners
Who’s New: SP Raymond Ledezma, SP Dillon Gee (AAA), 3B Brock Holt (A), CF Milton Bradley, CF Julio Borbon (AAA), SP Bobby Hendren, SS Dee Gordon (AAA), 1B Victor Wilson (AA), CF Alejandro De Aza, SP Brandon Morrow (AAA), CL Steve Cishek, 2B Alexi Casilla, 3B Conor Gillaspie (AAA), CF Ryan Kalish (AAA), CF Rymer Liriano (AAA), CL Donnie Joseph (AA), SP Robbie Erlin (AA), LF Bryce Harper (AA), SP Kyle Weiland (AAA), C James Sylvia, and 2011 ARI 1st
Who’s Gone: C David Ross, 2B Brandon Phillips, OF Jason Werth, SP Jon Papelbon, SP K-ROD, OF Carl Crawford, 3B Ryan Freel, OF Nick Swisher, and SP Rich Harden
Best Trade: Bringing Harper into the fold is nice. He’s their franchise piece. Trading K-Rod sucks, but I’d be fine with it when you’re getting Harper back. Also, getting a 1st for Ryan Freel. Good move.
Worst Trade: The Harden deal is by far the worst. He got nothing of note in return for a 28 yr old stud. Gotta do better than that. The Paps deal was pretty bad, too.
Reward:
Grade: C+...Nanz got raped in his trades with Spencer. He's basically in full rebuild mode at this point, and there's not a ton to like about it.
Texas Rangers
Grade: Incomplete. No GM…Max didn’t get here until the season got started. It seems like he’ll be a good addition to the league.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Who’s New: SP Santiago Casilla, CL John Greene, LF Nolan Reimold, SP Robert Olsson (AA), 2B Chase Utley, MR Chris Reitsma, 2B Marlon Anderson, and 3B Ryan Freel
Who’s Gone: 1B Richard Berkey (A), SP Aaron Nagle (A), CL C.C. Lee, MR Koji Uehara, SP Gil Meche, 2B Ruben Gotay, SP Michael Bacsik, MR Aaron Poreda, RF Jay Bruce (AA), and 2011 ARI 1st
Best Trade: Chase Utley…just think he’s a stud on an even better contract. Gotay is solid, but Utley was a clear upgrade in my opinion. He has been sooooo consistent in his career. The Casilla trade was real nice, too.
Worst Trade: Giving up a 1st for Freel…beyond stupid. I mean, what’s the point?
Reward:
Grade: A-...Darell had a nice frenzy, and has a nice core going forward. We'll see if he can get the job done and make the playoffs soon. Peavy looks great...jumped on a great oppoturnity to virtually give up nothing to acquire Casilla. Kemp/Francouer/Morneau/A-GON/Utley is awesome.
Colorado Rockies
Who’s New: 2B Rickie Weeks, LF John Patrick, SP Chase Anderson (AAA), CL Drake Britton (AA), SS Sean Brown, MR Brian Tallet, SP Michael Bacsik, MR Aaron Poreda, RF Jay Bruce (AA), 3B Edgardo Alfonzo (A), 3B Aaron Boone, CL John Howard (AAA), and MR Jensen Lewis (AA)
Who’s Gone: CL Armando Benitez, 3B Troy Glaus, SP Chase Anderson (A), RF Justin Upton (AAA), MR Chris Reitsma, 2B Marlon Anderson, CL Jose Fernandez (AA), CL Braulio Garcia (AA), 2B Andy LaRoche (AAA), C James Brown (AAA), RF Leon White, SP Curtis Fazio (AA), and COL 2011/2012 1st
Best Trade: Getting Bruce back in that very minor deal seems to be a steal for Shale now. Hindsight 20/20 obviously. I couldn’t really pick another deal as Shale had an awful frenzy.
Worst Trade: Which one? The Weeks deal seems to be the worst. However, he also traded his following 1st, too. So I don’t know what Shale can do, but he’s probably got the league’s worst situation right now. Disastrous.
Reward:
Grade: C-...The only reason this grade isn't lower is because Shale reached 8 trades. Otherwise, I'd probably give him a D. Trading his next two 1st is bad for many reasons. His team sucks, and what can he do to get out of it? Nothing, really. Shale needs to rebuild, and right now he can't. Gabbard got a nice TIA, but he hasn't returned the favor for Shale this year. Tough times in Colorado right now.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Who’s New: CF Tony Cobo, MR Joel Striegel (AA), 2B Benedict Fugate, 3B Daniel Descalso (A), SP Mario Demuth (A), CF Jesus Feliciano, MR Barry Zito, 1B Mark Teixeira, SP Scott Wiggins, and C Jason Grabowski
Who’s Gone: DH Rondell White (AAA), SS Rico Washington, CL Ryan Madison, CF Julio Borbon (AAA), LF Pat Watkins, SP Neftali Feliz (AAA), MR Chad Cordero (AAA), MR Michael Schwimer (AA), SP Cecil Keenan (A), 3B Aramis Ramirez, RF Brian Runion (AA), and SP Dillon Gee (AAA)
Best Trade: I liked the Teixeira addition, but it seems like it might not be working. Dale doesn’t make many moves, and when he does…it’s usually pretty minor.
Worst Trade: Didn’t like the Julio Borbon deal as it just didn’t make too much sense for me.
Reward:
Grade: B+...Dale had a nice frenzy as he got his 8 trades. Improved some of his youngsters, but I just don't know if he'll ever make the Playoffs in the ultra-competitive NL West...sucks because this is the nicest guy on the boards, and I'm not sure he'll make the Playoffs anytime soon.
San Diego Padres
Who’s New: SP Joseph Jackson, SP Mike Nannini, C David Ross, CF Alberto Salomon, SP Brian Bullington, and OF Eugene Delrio
Who’s Gone: SP Ricky Nolasco, C Mike Sweeney, 2B Andy Marte, 3B Alex Gordon, 1B Nick Johnson, SP Brandon Pray, SP Robbie Erlin (AA), SP Joshua Morrow, SS Nick Punto, SP Tim Hudson, SP Bobby Hendren, SS Dee Gordon (AAA), and 1B Victor Wilson (AA)
Best Trade: Getting Nannini and JJ were both steals IMO…I couldn’t really decide which was better.
Worst Trade: Didn’t like the Nolasco/d’Arnaud deal where he got Bullington and Delrio, but it wasn’t awful by any stretch. It was his 8th trade anyway so he could cash in on Salomon.
Reward:
Grade: A...Haberman had a nice frenzy as he improved his ball club. Garret Jones is an all around stud...I still want this guy! Nannini was a steal, and he improved him to go to boot. Salomon was a nice move as well. Can Habes get his 3rd division title in the best division going? We shall see.
San Francisco Giants
Who’s New: 1B Brandon Belt (AA), SS Felipe Lopez, LF Thomas Valente, RF Brian Runion (AA), LF Austin Jackson, 1B Nick Johnson, SP Brandon Pray, SP Jon Papelbon, SS Everth Cabrera (AAA), and SP Rich Harden
Who’s Gone: 2B Alfonso Soriano, CL Donnie Joseph, OF Trot Nixon, SP Joseph Jackson, SP Mark Buehrle, RF Ryan Ludwick, MR Barry Zito, SS Jose Reyes, SP Marcus Stroman (AA), and SF 2013 1st
Best Trade: Pick one between the Papelbon or Harden deal. I’d say the Harden deal one was Spencer’s best rape job if ya ask me.
Worst Trade: The Buerhle deal will always come back to haunt Spence…sure, he loves A JAX, but Buerhle is arguably the best SP in the game right now. Thanks again, Spence!
Reward:
Grade: B...Spence gave away Buerhle/Jackson/Ludwick with no value really coming back his way besides a few guys. However, he raped Nanz a couple times, and it sort of evened out a bit. He's one of the best GMs, but he even said he's not very good at selling. He did a nice job with his rewards as Paps and Posey are improved. Valente is interesting. Can Spence hold onto beat Darrel?
All done. Phew!
WEST
Anaheim Angels
Who’s New: SS Nick Punto and 2B Ruben Gotay
