I wanted to highlight our epic trade frenzy. I’ll give an overall grade on how each team did with their trades and how they used their rewards. Trades that did not count towards the frenzy will not be reflected here. I’ll showcase what player packed their bags, and where they went. Won’t really include picks as it’s too much work unless 1st Rounders are involved. I’ll start off with the East Divisions. Soooooo let’s go:
AL EAST
Baltimore Orioles
Who’s new: CL Ryan Madson, 3B Matt Dominguez, LF Jesse Whitmarsh, SP Manny Suazo, C Mike Sweeney, OF Jason Werth, SS Jose Iglesias (A), SP Ubaldo Jimenez, MR Alberto Dacosta (AAA), 2B Ryan Adams (AA), LF Sean Glick (AA), LF Rod Myers LF, and MR Jeremy Griffiths
Who’s gone: MR Joel Striegel (AA), 1B Angelo Hernandez, RF Felix Pie, 2B Rich Aurilla, CL Jeremy Accardo, 3B Todd Frazier (AAA), C Jason Castro (AAA), SP Pedro Espinosa (A), 3B Conor Gillaspie (AAA), C Ramon Hernandez, LF Dayan Vincedo (AA), CF Tony Campana (AA), CF Marlon Byrd, and SS Jose Peraza (A)
Best Trade: Acquiring Jayson Werth…he can play a multitude of positions, and Jah gives up a prospect that at this stage of the game isn’t really special.
Worst Trade: Acquiring C Mike Sweeney…what’s the point if you’re not going to start him everyday? Don’t think it was necessary to add salary, and Jah completed way more than 8 trades anyway so no need to do this in my opinion.
Reward:
Grade: A...Awesome job by Jah in this Frenzy. He made a boat load of trades, and used his rewards nicely. It's all worked out to a nice start for him through these first two months, too. Taveras looks fantastic.
Boston Red Sox
Who’s new: SP Mike Lincoln, SP Jeremy Affeldt , SP Joshua Morrow, 1B Derrick Gibson, MR Koji Uehara, C Mike Napoli, SS Nomar Garciaparra, OF Nick Swisher
Who’s gone: SP Heath Bell, SP Mike Nannini, 2B Alexi Casilla, 3B Edgardo Alfonzo, CF Timothy Buenestro (AA), SS Keith Ginter, LF Michael Taylor (A), 2B Josh Harrson (AA), 3B Brock Holt (A), CF Milton Bradley, 2B Benedict Fugate, 3B Daniel Descalso (A), SP Mario Demuth (A), and 2013 Bos First
Best Trade: Acquiring LF Nick Swisher for a bunch of okay pieces…Swisher was one of those candidates where you could take one of his talents to a Brilliant. I was interested in him with Nanz fire sell in full effect, but Break beat me to the punch. Excellent move by Break.
Worst Trade: Trading Nannini for Punto and Morrow. Punto was promptly traded after he was acquired by Boston, but why trade Nannini. You don’t trade that guy looking like that on that contract. Don’t get it.
Rewards:
Grade: B+...Solid stuff from Break. Improves Tazawa, and got a guy I wanted pretty bad in Swisher. I think he's the favorite coming out of the AL East, but it's going to be awfully tough again.
New York Yankees
Who’s New: C Jesus Montero (AAA), SP Shelby Miller (AA), 2B Gordon Beckham (AAA), SP Jake Odorizzi (AA), CF Juan Lagares (AA), 3B Aramis Ramirez, LF Kyle Hudson (AAA), LF Kevin Russo, SP Manny Suazo, 2B Alfonso Soriano, 3B Troy Glaus, and SP Chase Anderson (AAA)
Who’s Gone: MR Cla Meredith (AAA), 1B 1B Jacob Klos (AAA), CF Jesus Feliciano, CL Josh Hancock, SP Colin McHugh (AA), 3B Todd Frazier (AAA), C Jason Castro (AAA), 3B Everth Cabrera (AAA), and MR Jensen Lewis (A)
Best Trade Trade: Trading his #3 pick down a few times. He came out of it with Montero/Miller/3rd Round Pick…pretty smart.
Worst Trade: Not a bad trade, but didn’t get giving up Cabrera for Soriano. Erbes is a few years off so not sure what he wanted Soriano for. I’m nitpicking here.
Rewards:
Grade: A-...Very, very solid Off-Season from Jeffrey. He didn't do anything too drastic, but he made smart, shrewd moves to accelerate the rebuild a little bit. Goldie looks amazing. He really did a great job trading back and collecting more assets since he needs more and more of those.
Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Who’s New: 1B Matt Laporta (AAA), DH Rondell White (AAA), SS Rico Washington, 2B Akinori Iwamura, 1B Angelo Hernandez (AAA), MR Jake Dunning (AA), MR Bobby Jenks (AAA), RF Charlie Blackmon, SP Matt Moore (AAA), SP Brian Stokes, C Christian Bethancourt (AAA), CL Josh Hancock, SP Colin McHugh (AA), SP Ricky Fishburn, SP Ricky Nolasco, and C Travis D'arnaud (AAA)
Who’s Gone: SP Dong Rivero (AAA), CF Tony Cobo, 2B Orlando Hudson, 3B Matt Dominguez (A), MR Trey Hodges, CF Rymer Liriano (AAA), LF Carlos Lee, MR Boris Anaya (AA), LF Matt Holliday, MR Fede Sancho (AA), MR Caleb Thielbar (AA), SS Juan Herrera (A), SP Brian Bullington, and OF Eugene Delrio
Best Trade: Acquiring SP Ricky Nolasco, and C Travis D'arnaud for Bullington and Delrio…got younger and got the better pieces in my opinion. Even Aaron stated it wasn’t good value for him. Need I say more?
Worst Trade: The Holliday blockbuster…I just don’t think he got proper value for him, but that’s what happens when you have to include Carlos Lee just to get rid of his salary. The only guy remaining from the deal basically is Blackmon. I like him, but the value just wasn’t great IMO.
Reward:
Grade: B+...Just wasn't a total fan of the Holliday move, but Greeme cut significant salary and is still competing. That's impressive to me. Nolasco will be a stud and he clearly won that trade off of Aaron. He made Blackmon into a very nice player, too.
Toronto Blue Jays
Who’s New: SP Cecil Keenan (A), C Gary Sanchez (AA), SP Mike Minor (AAA), SP Tommy Millone (AAA), SS Chase Darnaud (A), CF Daryl Gerber (A), SP Lenny Moldenhauer, SP Yovani Gallardo (AAA), 3B Will Middlebrooks (AA), 3B Josh Donaldson, SS Tyler Pastornicky (AAA), 3B-Matthew Roten (A), CINCY 2011/2012 1st, ATL 2012 1st, and FLA 2012 1st
Who’s Gone: 1B Mark Teixeira, SP Gerik Baxter, CF Juan Rivera, SP Roy Halladay, 1B Albert Pujols, 2B Chase Utley, 3B Adrian Beltre, RF BJ Garbe
Best Trade: The return for Baxter…getting 5 assets for a very good SP is just flat out amazing. Baxter isn’t a top 10 SP and he got that type of return. Great work.
Worst Trade: BJ Garbe being dealt for nada…don’t think I have to explain this one too much. Just a bad trade because Game was pushing for 8 trades I suppose.
Reward:
Grade: B...Game sold off almost everyone and anyone. I think he did well for the most part, and he always gets great PDs so I'm sure his rebuild will be okay. I don't think he got the best value for Pujols. Still, it's going to be interesting to see how he does in the rebuild phase.
Atlanta Braves
Who’s New: SP Gerik Baxter and SP Matt Harvey
Who’s Gone: C Gary Sanchez (AA), SP Mike Minor (AAA), SP Tommy Millone (AAA), LF Bryce Harper (A), 1B Justin Smoak (A), SP Jamison Rowen, and CINCY 2012 1st/ATL 2012 1st
Worst Trade: Overpaid in both of his deals. The Harvey one was horrific.
Reward:
Grade: D...Lost both deals by a considerable amount. Just not impressive.
Florida Marlins
Who’s New: SP Jordan Zimmerman, MR Boris Anaya (AA), 1B Albert Pujols, RF BJ Garbe, 1B David Ortiz, SP Josh Collmenter , RF Desmond Jennings, 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff, 1B Hunter Morris (A), SS Keith Ginter, LF Michael Taylor (A), 2B Josh Harrson (AA), LF Scott Schebler (A)
Who’s Gone: 3B Aaron Boone, SS Nomar Garciaparra, SS Juan Herrera (A), 1B Ryan Howard, SP Jeremy Affeldt, LF Austin Jackson, CF Daryl Gerber (A), SP Lenny Moldenhauer, SP Leon Sabin, and FLA 2011/2012 1st
Best Trade: Our trade was a juicy one, but acquiring Pujols was nice. Didn’t think he really gave up a ton for a guy of Pujols stature.
Worst Trade: Don’t really see anything…Ashes had a lights-out frenzy. Killed it.
Reward:
Grade: A+...I think Ashes is the best GM here and this frenzy showcases that. He didn't make a bad trade. He made Jordan Zimmerman into a very nice SP. Jennings is going to be really good as well. Some guys like Kouz/Jennings among others don't even start!? Plus, he cut payroll from the previous season. Scary.
Montreal Expos
Who’s New: 3B Clifton Turner, SS Tommy Zucker (AAA), 3B Morgan Ensberg, LF Alan Anderson (A), SP Tim Hudson, OF Trot Nixon, 3B Willy Aybar (AAA), LF Rod Meyers, CF Chuck Finley Jr, and MR Jeremy Griffiths
Who’s Gone: SS Jose Peraza (A), LF Mike Rosamond, MR Jorge Julio (AAA), 2B Edwin Encarnacion, CF Cedric Benson, and SF 2011 1st
Best Trade: Acquiring Hudson and Nixon for basically nothing. That’s always nice.
Worst Trade: Didn’t really see anything too bad from Kobe here. A lot of minor trades, but maybe giving up Benson for Ensberg? Ensberg just seems to be on the downslope, and Benson is a viable starter at this point with the ability to play all over the field.
Reward:
Grade: B...Kobe didn't do anything too drastic, but he got the 8 trades and that's really all that matters at this point. He improved some of his younger guys. Right now, he still seems to be stuck in neutral.
New York Mets
Who’s New: SS Jose Reyes, 2B Edwin Encarnacion, SP Aaron Nagel (A), MR Chen-Chang Lee, LF Carlos Lee, LF Matt Holliday, RF Ryan Ludwick, CL Armando Benitez, SP Gil Meche, SP Leon Sabin, SP K-ROD, OF Carl Crawford, and 3B Adrian Beltre
Who’s Gone: 3B Will Middlebrooks, SP Kyle Weiland (AAA), SP Yovani Gallardo (AAA), 1B Brandon Belt (AA), SP Chris Sale (AAA), SS Tommy Zucker (AAA), LF Nolan Reimold, LF Kevin Russo , RF Charlie Blackmon, LF Kyle Hudson (AAA), SP Matt Moore, 3B Josh Donaldson, CF Ryan Kalish (AAA), CL John Howard (AAA), SP Robert Olsson (AA), SS Tyler Pastornicky (AAA), and NYM/TB 2012 1st
Best Trade: Ryan Ludwick coming here…for me, Dan doesn’t really give up anything to get a very nice bat.
Worst Trade: Giving up Sale, and then trading the main piece that he acquired in that deal (Harper) right after that. I’m just not a fan of that. For me, he could’ve made out nicely by TIA’ing Jordan Zimmerman’s hits, and then having Bryce in the fold for Sale. Gotta keep one of those guys IMO.
Reward:
Grade: C+...just not a fan of him trying to accelerate a win-now process. Look at the results, too. Anyway, he didn't even use one of his rewards as he used it for Greeme. Stupid. Next season will be interesting for Dan.
Philadelphia Phillies
They made one trade, and it was pretty minor. Jordan could’ve done some nice things with his young team…instead he virtually did nothing.
Reward:
Grade: D...not much to say here. Disappointing turnout from a new GM.
I'll probably do the Central Division, but don't think I'll have the time to do the West.
