The highly anticipated 2009 draft is finally on the way next offseason! It's the moment that at least some people here have been waiting quite some time for. Obviously, being that we are nearly halfway through the current season, it would be very difficult to determine which teams would be in what order for the draft.
So, in this initial stage, I'm just going to rank the top 28 draftees regardless of any team needs or anything. Then, once we get a more concrete idea of the draft order, real mocks could then take place. I understand that not everyone is done at the moment, but this should at least give us somewhat of an idea of what the early picks could look like.
Let's see how the 1st round of this draft could very well look like:
1. CF Mike Trout
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3256.html
Trout clearly has to be the top pick in this draft and could easily turn into the most exciting and dynamic player we have yet to see. The ratings are off the charts literally and if anyone has 50/50 or even 60/60 potential in the future, Trout could be that guy.
The one thing to consider with Trout though is the strong winning desire. However, the likelihood of Trout immediately getting franchised by the team that drafts him is very possible and could negate this. Trout is a special player and it will be a lot of fun to see how his career here turns out.
2. 1B Paul Goldschmidt
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p502.html
Goldschmidt should easily be the #2 pick and would be a #1 pick here in most other drafts. Brilliant homers and good in hits and walks is always nice and he should turn into one of the future BBSBL sluggers with time. He also starts with good speed that could turn into B/A running/stealing with a pair of TIB's. Goldie will provide very solid defense as well. Can't go wrong with him. I could very well see Goldschmidt getting franchised in the future as well.
3. SP Stephen Strasburg
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p374.html
Strasburg is a future ace in the making and should be yet another strong franchising candidate. The one negative is the prone injury rating, but if the team that drafts him has a lot of board cash by the time he comes up, that shouldn't be as much of an issue. A duration and 10 velocity are 2 plus' as well.
4. SP Mike Minor
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3283.html
Minor should be another great pitcher here and obviously could use a TIA in home runs allowed, which will more than likely happen. Minor's ratings generally speaking are nice, as is his B duration, which could go up in either spring training or via a TIB. He could be a solid #2-3 pitcher on some teams or an ace on other teams.
5. RF Wil Myers
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2588.html
Myers should turn into a beast himself, especially after his home runs get TIA'd. He looks like an easy 5th pick here and should turn into a big run producer wherever he is.
6. SP Shelby Miller
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2980.html
Miller should turn into another solid pitcher here and doesn't require any TIA's from the start, which is nice. Definitely #2-3 starting potential here at the very least. He could end up falling maybe a few spots, but should still be within the top 10 for sure.
7. SP Patrick Corbin
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3221.html
The next best pitcher after Miller will probably be Corbin, who only needs a hits TIA to be a stud. And then in spring training, a duration bump to A could turn him into a real future ace. With eventual G/G/B ratings, Corbin should perform very well at most stadiums and depending on the team he goes to, he could turn into anything from an ace to a #2-3 starter.
8. 2B Dustin Ackley
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2610.html
As we move onto the 4-star players, Dustin Ackley is arguably the top one among them. A home runs TIA and a couple TIB's to his running speed and stealing ability will turn him into an amazing hitter. Why he has an OF arm rating despite only starting with 2B is beyond me, but if he learns OF positions, that won't matter. Ackley is a top 10 talent and I'll be very surprised if he ends falling lower than the top 10.
9. 3B Kyle Seager
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1806.html
Seager has some great ratings for a third baseman and could be a future cornerstone player with a hits TIA and TIB's to running speed and stealing ability. That's 30/30 potential right there. Seager looks to be a lock for a top 10 selection.
10. 1B Brandon Belt
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3271.html
Belt may be a first baseman, but with a home runs TIA and multiple TIB's to running speed and stealing ability, he could turn into a very good hitter for any team. His character ratings are nice too and he will probably end up being a top 10 selection.
11. SP Garrett Richards
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3225.html
Probably the best of all 4-star pitchers, Richards could possibly go top 10, but should be top 15 at the very least. A TIA to his hits makes him a stud and he'd need two spring training bumps to get to A duration as well. Richards could have ace potential on some teams, or could be a #2 on a better team as well.
12. MR Drew Storen
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1328.html
Storen is arguably the top pitcher in this draft that will strictly be a reliever. He has really nice ratings, is loyal and has an 8 in velocity, which is very nice. He should be a future closer for the team he ends up playing on.
13. SP Zack Wheeler
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1876.html
Wheeler is another one of the best among the 4-star pitchers. All he really needs is a walks TIA, and one spring training to get to A duration. After that, he's a future middle rotation starter for sure on most teams. Furthermore, he's got the minimal/loyal winning/loyalty combo, which is always nice, as is a 65% ground ball percentage. If he can find his control here, he should turn into a very good pitcher. It's possible he may go top 10, but if not, then top 15 for sure.
14. 2B Grant Green
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2695.html
Green should be another solid hitter here and a likely top 15 pick. A home runs TIA makes him a power threat and TIB's to running speed and stealing ability make him into somewhat of an on-base threat. The potential is there for him and hopefully, he will turn out to be a better play here than he has in reality.
15. SP Tyler Skaggs
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2604.html
Skaggs should be yet another young pitcher that should have a lot of potential here once he gets a home runs TIA and a couple spring training duration bumps. Barring any PD's, Skaggs should be a solid middle rotation starter in the future.
16. 3B Nolan Arenado
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2437.html
Nolan Arenado might not turn into an OBP machine, but with a TIA to home runs, he could turn into a potential slugger once he fully develops. He will likely hit a bunch of doubles and provide great defense as well. He will most likely be a top 15 pick.
17. CF Billy Hamilton
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3108.html
Hamilton is an intriguing choice because despite only being a G/F/F hitter (eventually either G/A/F or G/F/A, depending on where the TIA is used), he has that lethal A/A running/stealing duo to make him an instant base-stealing threat. He has also has A range in CF, to make him that much more useful of an outfielder. Hamilton could go as high as top 10 or as low as top 20.
18. 2B Jeff Kobernus
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2215.html
Kobernus is pretty much a 2B version of Hamilton with his talent ratings and A/A running/stealing. He's a few years older than Hamilton though, hence the lower rank. Kobernus' character ratings are a plus as well. He should be a top 15-20 pick most likely.
19. SP Joe Kelly
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2651.html
Kelly is yet another solid pitcher in this draft who only really needs a TIA to hits allowed to become a solid middle rotation starter on most teams. It will take some more time to work on improving his duration, but nonetheless, he would be a solid mid-1st pick. Top 15-20 most likely.
20. SP David Hale
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1306.html
I'm not THAT big on Hale to be honest. I put him this low because of his E duration and poor in strikeouts. I'm not saying either of those factors should be considered top factors generally speaking, but I think that at least 1 of those ratings will turn people away in hopes of finding someone better with their pick. Hale could be a solid pitcher though, but he might be better off as a reliever unless someone uses a few spring trainings to get his duration up. Likely a top 15-20 selection.
21. SP Robbie Erlin
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1618.html
Erlin could be a solid middle rotation starter on most teams after getting a TIA to hits allowed. He'll have to get his duration up to be a bit more useful, but should be a good pitcher nonetheless. Top 20-25 pick probably.
22. SS Chris Owings
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2826.html
Owings could be a really nice mid-late 1st round pick. Good in hits, C/B running stealing, and B range at 2B are all nice and the fact that he is loyal is a plus. He's also 16 and will have a lot of time to grow and develop into a good hitter. He will probably be in the top 20-25.
23. 2B DJ LeMahieu
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3212.html
LeMahieu could be a late round steal, due to his speed and defensive range in particular, along with being good in hits. A couple of TIB's could turn him into a base stealing machine. He will probably go in the low 20s, but I wouldn't be surprised if a team in need of a bat with speed takes him between 15-20. He's only one rank lower than Owings due to age.
24. SP Kyle Gibson
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1900.html
Gibson has the potential of a back-end or even middle rotation starter and is probably the next best pitcher available. Like Hale, Gibson's duration and strikeouts suck, but the duration can be improved easily. He should turn into late 1st round pick.
25. MR Aaron Crow
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2627.html
Crow is a very solid reliever that really just needs a walks TIA to be legit wherever he goes. He could possibly be a top 20 pick, but more likely to fall in the top 25.
26. C Tony Sanchez
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3253.html
Arguably the best catcher here, Sanchez should be a solid late 1st round pick for a team that needs him. A TIA to his hits makes him a very good hitter, along with being in good in home runs as well. Sanchez is also loyal, which is nice, as are some of his other character ratings.
27. CF Donavan Tate
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2985.html
Another projected late 1st round pick that could really benefit from a hits TIA, among other things would be Tate. A TIB to his stealing ability would be nice as well. With all that, Tate could turn into a future leadoff hitter. Hopefully, his career here turns out a lot better than it did in reality.
28. MR Mike Belfiore
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2370.html
Mike Belfiore could very well close out the 1st round. Like Crow, Belfiore could turn into another really good reliever, who would only need a TIA to his hits allowed. The fact that he's a lefty makes him that much more intriguing. Belfiore has top 25 potential in this draft, but could also be an early 2nd round pick, depending on what certain teams are looking for with those picks.
Obviously, Spencer isn't done with the entire draft class just yet. But with most of the top guys having been put together, this is what the 1st round of the 2009 draft could at least somewhat look like this offseason. I'm sure there will be more 2009 draft articles in the future once more players are created and draft orders are better determined for teams.
Good luck to all postseason contenders, as well as the teams tanking for better draft picks in what will be an amazing draft!
