Here is 15 questions with the NL West leading Rockies GM Shale Briskin!
1. So invariably everyone will complain about us doing this so we gotta make sure we do a good job. So lets name drop and compliment. 5 guys that are Gms here that you love. Why do you love them? Etc.
- Steve: Steve's been busy lately, and as a result, has been slacking on posting some of his claims and improving his team and financial situation, among other things. But he's a wonderful personality within this league. He provides great comic relief when it needs to happen and is pretty much a likeable guy that no one could really hate on.
- Habes: Habes is what you ideally want out of a GM. He's active. He does a lot of stuff to try and improve his team. He's funny a lot, but when he needs to be serious, he's very good with that as well. Any valid point he makes should be looked at with a good eye.
- Darell: The NL West has a lot of fun GM's. Darell is another one of them. Likeable guy. Gets his shit done. Sometimes slacks on a few things, but no one is perfect. He has his funny moments and he's another GM can really hate on. Well Kobe for some reason doesn't like him, but pretty sure Darell doesn't have any other haters.
- Nanz: It's a shame Nanz isn't around as much lately. But when he is, he is by far one of the most enjoyable presences here. I mean how can you hate someone known as Young Stamos? Impossible. The Nanzanator is hilarious, marmadukes all the time and is just a funny guy. Great comic relief for all the hectic bullshit that occurs here.
- Spencer: Yup had to include Spence as well. He's one of the most active GM's around since the beginning, does a lot for the league and the NL West would never be the same without him. Yet another likeable NL West GM that no one can really hate on.
So pretty obviously here my strategy is to get 5 automatic 3s because we were nice to the above people. I had hoped Shale and I would be 6 and 7. But of course Shale has to be an ass kisser and put me on the list. WTF Shale? Don't you get it? Im trying to guarantee us a 3! OMFG. So to further our cause....
Styro. Love this guy. Genuine nice hard working individual. Love SoCal as well. And the Angels. Also love UCLA.
Kobe. People love to hate him but I think hes the super troll of BBSBL. He just fucks with people and they end up biting. LOve this guy. Love Alabama. Love the Tide. Roll Tide Roll.
Game. Wow. Hes really turned the corner. great GM now. First ever title here in BBSBL. Youve come a long way sir. Love SoCal. Love Lego Land. Nice to have you around.
2. Everyone hates on Eli. Rightfully so after last year. What happened? Why did he have such a bad year? Can he rebound? What type of year do you see him having this year?
It was just a bad year. Receivers must have missed some routes or over/under-ran them and it led to all the picks. But the real reason was the O-Line being shitty and giving him 0 protection at all. It was pathetic. Big O-Line upgrades really need to happen in the draft and free agency. The Giants won their 2 recent Super Bowls with solid veteran O-Lines. Now that many of those guys have retired, new blood needs to come through and step up.
Eli will rebound if the protection is better and if Cruz stays healthy. I expect a 4,000+ passing season from him. 20+ TD's. Less than 15 picks. He'll be fine. The Giants should be able to win the NFC East every single season as long as Eli is under center.
Is the Oline better? It seems like it isnt. I cant imagine having a talented QB like Eli and not making the OLine the top priority. I mean he can make receivers better. He ant make his Oline better. The other thing is the absolute lack of a running game. I mean how can you not add a RB every year? Most good teams have 3 or 4 solid options. I dont get not having any really. Just seems like everyone got bad overnight.
3. Are you donkeypunch13? Don't lie.
Is my name JC? Nope. JC is a good friend of mine that I've known for over 3 years. He lives in Las Vegas, where he recently moved. He used to live in the country and he sounds like a country guy too. He has a kid but he and his ex have been divorced for a few years. His step-father was former MLB pitcher John Henry Johnson. Here is all you need to know about him:
www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/johnsjo04.shtml
I met JC on MLB Dugout Heroes. I derbied with him there a ton. He may have been slightly better than me but the two of us were definitely top 10 all time in the game's history. Break, Darell and Stutter all sucked at derby. I didn't wanna bring JC here right away originally. I wanted to get him in GABL or LBB first to learn OOTP a bit before coming to such an active league like this. But I was willing to do literally anything to prevent any contractions for happening, so I saved two teams by bringing in JC. It had to be done. Contraction could have damaged this league forever.
I dont think hiring this guy means that contraction wont happen. FYI. I can still see us firing two guys and shrinking the league. Ideally we wouldnt need to contract but it might go that way.
What is dugout heroes?
I still think youre donkeypunch btw.
4. You seem to be pretty loyal to your friends even when they seem to be in the wrong. Have you learned or changed in this respect since BBSBL started?
How can you say that people are always right or wrong? Every person has their own opinions. If something is based on facts, I might try to show why they may have thought or acted a certain way, but if it's opinion based, then it doesn't matter as much. I value loyalty very highly. One of the most important concepts in life by far. I try to be more reasonable with opinions on everything, but I'm not gonna straight up bash someone like crazy if I'm good friends with them. I respect them enough to not cross the line in that regard.
Look, every topic and situation is different from one another. There are countless variables altogether. I try to be reasonable with everything, but I just don't wanna see anyone I care about suffer.
When did I say people are always right or wrong? I said you seem to defend your friends even when they are wrong. Big difference. Reading is fundamental!
But ya, I thin sometimes you rush to the defense of your friends instead of occasionally saying, "Hey you are wrong!" Its ok. You friends wont mind if you dont always agree with them. At least then it will give you some validity when you do agree with them.
5. You have control in the NL West. Do you still think the division is yours to win? If so what do I need to beat you?
Nothing has been decided yet. It's gonna be a long battle between the Rockies and Giants. It might go down to the final regular season sim. Your Patterson trade was good for you, but he won't hit as well in your stadium, so like I said before, he will need to rake on the road to make a big difference. Both our teams are solid in just about every area. You could always get another hitter or pitcher that will play well at your stadium, but at the same time, I could do that as well. We obviously have different needs for players that fit in our stadiums. It's just a matter of who is available elsewhere and what ends up happening.
I dislike my pen. I wish I had better top end SP. Im not sure I can fix either of these problems now. But Im still getting better. Im adding speed. And top end players. Also getting some more depth for more future deals. I thought my team would be better but were scuffling. Not sure I can catch you tbh.
6. Do you have a 5 year plan when deciding current moves? Do you look towards the future, or are you just about today? On this topic, who is replacing Juan once hes gone?
Yeah I try to keep the future in mind for sure. I look at both the present and the future. May not always 5 seasons in advance but at least 3 seasons in advance with everything I do. Obviously, there may be some exceptions depending on age and other factors.
My outfield depth is pretty much set for the future. Feliciano, Maggs and Bradley all signed extensions and thank God they all did. That will be my OF of the future once Juan and Burnitz age a bit more. I still have Mamon Tucker as good OF depth as well. As long as the PD's don't get too crazy, my outfield will be in good shape for a while.
I guess it helps to be in Coors because IMO none of the guys you mention are world beaters. I think you need a bopper. Juan has been huge for you. I think youre underplaying how big his role is.
Juggling present and future is huge in any simulation sports. Hard not to go all in for the present but it is nice to have some future spects to play with.
7. Obviously you are a huge Mets homer. Has Wright been a disappointment? Would you move him if someone gave up a ton? Or is he a Rockie for life?
No I'm not moving him because I won't be killing my ticket sales and finances, both of which I value very highly. A fan loyalty drop is litrally one of the last things I'd ever want to see here. That wouldn't be just bad...it would probably be a crisis. In order to have an elite team, you probably need to crank up the payroll. And in order to manage a high payroll, you gotta be making a lot of money and manage your money well, which I have done in recent years. That is not a risk I wanna take and I will avoid it at all just about all costs.
I know that I won't be getting better players for Wright. Some people have offered for him and the offers were laughable and pathetic. He's on the cusp of becoming an elite SS, which is a difficult position to find great talent at. Soon enough, he will be hitting 40+ homers a season and will win some MVP's. I have no reason to move him at all. I'll do the 10 years $15 million salary by 2010 or 2011 whenever it happens and then go from there. If he doesn't retire after that contract, I might or might not keep him by then. We'd have to see. Hopefully he'd stick around for cheap.
Wright has not been a disappointment. His power has been disappointing because it hasn't finished developing yet. But homers aside, he's been an awesome player in everything except for walks. He hits a ton, gets a lot of doubles and drives in runs. He's only gonna get better as the years go on.
I love David Wright. With locked ratings he will be a stud. And at Coors he could put up legendary type numbers. Even if you start losing just having him rake in your park will be fun. I kinda envy you having Coors Field. I think eventually Id just try and break offensive records. Fuck winning. Overrated.
8. Our race is pretty tight, but really whats the point? Neither of us can beat CHI PIT or FLA. Why even try?
Pffft. The postseason is always a crap shoot. You never know what may happen. So many variables to consider. Both of our teams could hold our own against any other team in the entire league. We both have enough pitching and hitting to win championships. Whether that happens is up to OOTP. Whatever happens will happen and you gotta take it for what it is.
I'm a competitor. And like the one and only Herman Edwards once said, "You play to win the game." On any given day, anything can happen. You just gotta hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. There really isn't more to it than that.
I call bullshit. We dont have a chance against the top 3 NL Teams. Yadda yadda yadda. Play to win, anything can happen, 110% WTF with all these cliches.
9. Grade donkeypunch13 for his activity and performance thus far. Don't be a homer. Grade harshly.
Well JC has 0 OOTP experience prior to joining here. So he's done ok so far in his very brief time here. This whole experience has been overwhelming for him. And in addition to that, he recently moved to Vegas and his uncle passed away either earlier this week or last week. So he's been very busy dealing with that.
I probably suggested the trade block to him a little too soon and he just wasn't prepared to get swamped by so many PM's. Furthermore, the fact that Erbes has to mediate any trade he does make the process that much more stressful for someone like him. Obviously, in BBSBL, we're all impatient and we all demand immediate answers and results and shit like that. JC can be an active GM. He just needs to learn this shit more and more. I told him there's a massive learning curve here, so once he gets the hang of it, he'll be a solid GM.
I wouldn't have brought him here if I didn't think I could trust him to be active, but I can, so that's why I brought him here over others that I wouldn't trust as much.
This is an easy one. F. Hes been horrible. Almost as bad as Martinez.
10. Whats the next new rule? What is something people seem to be clamoring for that we can fix come the off season?
I think the tanking penalties will eventually get lighter. And that's one thing that quite a few GM's would love to see. I for one think the fan loyalty drop is a bit much. There should at least be a cap on it so that you don't see too many teams like the Reds with "extremely poor" fan loyalty. That should never be happening and it's just asking for those teams to never be legit ever again. And the financial problems will never go away. Look at Steve and his Brewers. He's had financial problems there since forever and it's a huge factor as to why the Brewers have never been a legit contender.
Something seriously needs to be done so that teams like the Brewers and Reds can make more revenue and not be in financial pitfalls all the time.
So I predict that next offseason, either the tanking penalties will go away, or that something will be done to determine a minimum level of fan loyalty for all teams.
IDC much bout the tanking yure talking about. I dont like blatant tanking. IMO the biggest prblem is this dumb PD reversal for 1st year players. Such a dumb idea./ We don't need more reversals. Ratings correct themselves. Reversing more PDs make rating higher.
11. How are the real life Mets doing? One guy that has surprised you? One guy that has disappointed you?
The real Mets are doing ok. They have some potential and I'd to see them finish with a winning record for the first time since 2008. Juan Lagares and Jenrry Mejia have been notable surprises, although Lagares is now on the DL. Granderson has been disappointing. He just hasn't gotten it going at the plate yet and hopefully he starts to hit better soon.
Who wouldve thought that Granderson would be hurt. I wish Aaron would be the Mets manager. Thatd be sweet.
12. If James gets fired would you want to go to the Mets? Why or why not?
James is on the chopping block? News to me. I hope he doesn't get booted. James is a good guy. It would suck to lose him here. Regardless, I'm staying in Denver. I love my team and my stadium and it's just a lot of fun to be where I'm at. I've built an NL West powerhouse and I have no reason to leave it all behind. Furthermore, The Mets aren't the most attractive team in this league right now and there are all kinds of problems there. I won't be relocating.
He isnt on the hot seat. I was just curious how deep your homerism runs.
What if you could take David Wright with you?
13. Bleacher Report. How is it? Do you like it? How are things going over there?
It's good. The same shit different week pretty much. I do some articles each week and get my reads and that's it. I enjoy it because the fans are passionate, although some are either complete morons or wanna-be trolls that are terrible at trolling. I need to do this sports writing internship soon. That would be useful in my ideal career path.
I hate BR. I hate the format and the articles. Sometimes I start reading an article and then I slap myself on the face and punch myself in the balls.
14. You have to fire DRowe or Break. Who is it? Why?
Neither. Both do not deserve to get booted at all. Break is active, maybe not as active as he was when his team was awesome, but he's still one of the most active GM's around. He tried some experiments here and there, and most of them backfired and he hopefully learned from them. He seems to like his future and thinks he could have an elite rotation in a few seasons. He's mentioned that he plans on running the AL East again starting in like 2009 or so.
No one gets more shit here than DRowe. Despite all the trolling Break and I have gotten, DRowe gets shitted on every single day by at least 1 GM. He's been more active, gets his shit done when he needs to (even if I have to constantly remind him to do things here), and has been trying hard to put together a great team. He had a great free agency this past offseason and now has a great team. He is due to get back in the postseason, and hopefully for his sake, that will happen.
No one here deserves to get booted. All the booting talk is a bunch of empty threats that shouldn't be taken seriously. And there's no reason to think about booting people so much unless they really fuck up bad like Danchevy did. That was completely justified. Erbes booting Break or DRowe just because he doesn't like them would not be justified at all.
You didnt answer the question you slippery fuck.
15. Corey Hart. Hes so good. Talk about him for like a paragraph. Just tell me what you think about him.
Big Corey Hart just had an amazing PD and is now arguably the best catcher in the NL. His All-Star Game appearance streak should continue for sure. He hits a lot, has power and steals a ton of bases. His defense blows, but his bat alone can make up for all the stolen bases he will allow.
Big shout out to former backup catcher Todd Hundley by the way for hooking up Hart with his steroids connect last season. They've been working and Hart is just a beast now. It would be sick if he and Wright start getting 40+ homer seasons all the time in the future.
Amazing catcher. Amazing hitter. All time BBSBL great in your park. I miss Dayton Buller.
Thanks for the interview, Spencer! Always a pleasure.
