We did this like 3 weeks ago and Erbes never posted it. Id like something for it so Im posting.....
1. The Giants were on an unprecedented run of nine straight seasons with at least 90 wins. That's impressive. Last season you decided to end your run of dominance. What went into that decision? Do you take on a different mindset when competing vs. rebuilding, for example on the boards?
I got bored. It was so dumb. I was struggling a bit. It was harder to get to 100. I didn't have the pieces to continually add. Just seemed like my ability to domi9nant my division was crumbling a bit. I also was just looking around the league and seeing so many young stars and I was getting jealous. I wanted that upper tier youth. I wanted multiple prospects that looked sexy. Plus I just anted to trade. I wanted to push the envelope a bit and do something different. having said all that it was definitely a mistake to rebuild. I still had many top tier players. and worse than that I got poor value for those players. I rushed it. Never good to rush into anything in sim leagues. You'll always regret it.
As far as rebuilding versus competing I think that I do things pretty much the same. I think you need to be a little more patient when rebuilding. When Im going for it Im looking to get better every sim. I want a better backup MI. A better mop up guy. A better backup C. Everything is important. Every spot. Every IP. Every AB. Never know when someone is gonna have a chance to win a game. And even with 162 games every game is important. I win in April is the same as a win in September. Id say its slightly more important to be board active. TIAs are important. But IMO IRIs are almost just as important when your winning. Someone like Jeff Weaver is a perfect example. He doesnt need a TIA. But if I TIB him and IRI him itll be 8 million and hell be a much better SP because of it. SO board activity is always important.
2. Speaking of rebuilding, you've finally graduated to the #1 system in the league. You're minors are loaded with top end talent, but what's even more impressive is the depth. You're 10th best prospect (according to the game) is a 4.5* player! That's nuts. Where do you think this system ranks all time?
Oh man. Love these guys. A lot of this is because of board cash. I built a bunch of these guys up. Austin Jackson specially. But even after trading him Paul Maholm and Logan Morrison Im still #1. Really goes to show how good a job I did rebuilding. I have tons of good players. And remember I did a shitty job of acquiring talent when I sold originally. Its kinda crazy if you think about it. If I had done a better job selling I potentially wouldve had more talent now.
As for all time talent I dont think I have the top end talent to see its an All time best type of system. I know Im gonna forget some epically great system but when I think all time great I think of Ashes system when he had multiple BRILL type talents. I had very good high end type players, and lots of depth but none of the HOF type quality players.
3. There's been a lot of chatter about the NL West this season, specifically how bad it is. The Rockies are leading at the moment, but is that more a case of the Rockies being good or winning by default because no one else can? Do they have enough to finally win the division title this year?
I think the Rockies have a pretty good team. I dont think theyre as good as my teams were or Aarons teams were but it doesnt matter when the division is down. Shale has done a good job of acquiring better pitching and still having good enough offense. Obviously in his park mediocre type hitters look better than they are but remember that hitters come in there from other teams and have the same advantages. o winning is winning, regardless of home field.
I think Shales biggest triumph is the improvement of the SP. Lackey and Stark are both pretty good. Gabbard and Washburn are solid as well. I think after some early success he realized that hell never truly contend unless his SP is much improved. And he went out and made that part of his team better. To a ceratin extent anyone can hit in Coors. Pitching in COors is way different.
4. It seems like a lot of teams are reluctant to go for it these days. The Astros, buoyed by a great start, are the exception. Is this bad for the league; having so many tankers and not enough go-getters? Should more teams be loading up this season to make a run, i.e. Detroit, San Diego, Cleveland, etc.?
Yes. This is bad for the league. I think too many teams sell and not enough buy. One of the many reasons Im forgoing rebuilding so quickly. I cant stand that 30 year old guys have no value. In OOTP guys can produce up to 35 or 36. Why not have a bunch of guys that will be great for you for 4-6 years. I dont get it. So many GMs have this mindset that they want 15 25 year old guys and that theyll set their team up and then never trade again? How unrealistic is that? Too many guys are just not active enough or just dont have the balls to trade youth for older guys. Especially considering how inconsistent young players can be. Most guys PD out. Id rather have a 30 year old with better real ratings.
I think Detroit and Cleveland are perpetually offenders. Kansas City was when he was around. To a certain degree even the Dodgers and Angels seem to stay in that middle ground. Alot o this has to do with gys not having that type of free time. It takes activity and constant attention to compete. You need to be on the board trolling for deals. Much easier to sit back and hope you team just develops.
5. You've recently been promoted in the league to draft file maker. What are your plans for the upcoming drafts? Do you see yourself creating players throughout the season or all at once?
As of now I really just wanna give you a skeleton file. I want to follow your ratings key. Just go and make players by the letter of the law essentially. Allow you to bump or lower guys to fit into the league. As it is now the ratings will be very low and probably unsuitable unless some guys are bumped up. Eventually Id love to have 100% control over it. To allow myself to be more creative. But for now Im content with this and I think its best for the league this way.
As for making the players, I plan to do it a little at a time. Ive already done a handful of guys. Hope to do some more today if possible. This will also give you more time to edit guys up or down as well. And it will give guys something else to look at during the year. I think its best for everyone involved. I also like the idea that we can breeze more quickly through the offseason because the draft wont be a concern for you. Should make the league much better.
6. I've been pretty impressed with league activity recently and the amount of trades that I'm processing on a sim to sim basis. In the past season or so, who's made the best and worst trades?
Pretty easily Ive made the worst overall. I think my selling trades from contender to re-builder were horrendous.I got less then decent value on every star I traded. And on one of my better trades with Seattle IO let Nanz re do it and got screwed on it as well. I did a horrible job and couldve gotten better value on almost every deal I did. Exhibit A on how not to rebuild. Much of it was due to my need to just do something different. I knew the more I thought about it the less Id want to do it. But that shows you that it was a bad idea.
As for good trades it is a little tougher. Id have to say Kobe. He was gifted a very good team with tons of youth. But hes done a great job with it. He has a title and hes rolling this year. Hes made whole sale changes and is just continuing to win. Hes done a very good job and hopefully at some point he gets credit for it.
7. I'm going to pick on Shale right now because I can. He recently wrote out an awesome article that showed how much board cash each GM has earned. 6 out of the 7 earners have all been to the playoffs multiple times and I believe all have participated in a World Series. The lone loser? Shale. Being the OOTP guru you are and seeing all of the dumb spending decisions Shale has made in the past, do you have general rules you try to abide by when spending board cash?
Oh spending Board cash well is very important. Obviously active Ms have a leg up on winning here. It helps so much. But you have to know where to use a TIA or when to bump a guy up with IRIs. SOme Gms are against IRIs but I think they are a very important tool for winning. I have probably spend as much money on IRIs over the years as TIAs. And thats saying a lot considering the difference in cost.
So my rules are simple. Always have a ton of board cash on hand. I try to stay above 10 million. You never know when youll need it. Maybe someone wants to trade for it. Maybe you need a reversal. Maybe someone gets a PD and you want to give him a TIA to make him a stud. And also you never know when youll get busy in RL and need that excess cash on hand. Secondly only TIA when rebuilding. No need for IRIs when youre losing. Dont worry about quickening development by IRIing. Just TIA folks. Build up your system. Lastly, IRI a ton when winning. Ideally you wait for a rating increase before IRIing. But look at your squad and crunch the numbers. Someone cant hit lefties? IRI. Someone is below talent level in ratings? IRI. Also I think small things like clutch and consistency do matter. So TIB those guys. Who knows what that last at bat in a big game will come sown to. Have as much on your side as possible.
8. I think a couple seasons ago I offered to switch teams with someone, and now Play has offered to do the same. First, is it a good idea for GMs to flip teams? And second, if you could, which team would you switch with?
I dont like switching. To me its an easy way out. I know GMs get bored. They want a new challenge. They either have had so much success they want to try a different team. Or theyve had so much bad luck they just want to start over. I get it. But I think the main thing should be to win. Win as much as possible. Long term. Short term. Win. I think Ive learned my lesson with my recent rebuild. Losing sucks. Rebuilding is overrated. And in OOTP the financial part of the game makes losing really hurtful. My revenue is already down a ton. SO if youre winning. just keep it going. Continued success is fun.
As for allowing it Id want it to be somewhat interesting. Not just a hey dude lets switch. I think there should be some type of protocol. A GM vote. An article or interview with both GMs. Something to make it interesting. Some hops for guys to jump through. Maybe even compensation going with the Gm that has done the better job to make the transition easier.
I definitely have more leeway for current Gms jumping to new pen teams. I still would like some type of article done as payment for a move though.
As far as where Id like to go its tough. Id probably want a bigger payroll like the Yankees. Or just control of elite talent, maybe Florida. But Id never wanna switch. I love my Giants. No desire to be anywhere else.
9. What's the deal with old people? Like seriously. The reason the Royals left was, and I quote, "The league is unfair and unbalanced because some people just sit on the boards all day earning cash." While I understand many of us work and have lives outside of BBSBL, is this a cop out reason to quit? It's seems more lazy to me especially with him not stepping down in his other leagues.
I dont think this is an argument against old people. I think this is an argument against people that have limited creativity or a smaller frame of reference for what is acceptable. In most cases these people are older. But alot of it has to do with what I call the GABL mentality. Its just this affinity for a slower paced lack of activity league. You dont talk to me, I wont talk to you. Ill export twice a week. Ill post 1 time after every sim. Maybe 2. If someone posts more than once in a row then they're a moron. If these things are ideal for you then BBS leagues arent for you. Board activity and community are why BBS leagues succeed. You grow to love and hate people. To voice your opinion on league or RL activities. And you miss it when your away. You desire to see whats going on. You want to make your team better. You spend moments of your day that are less interesting day dreaming about what to do to make your team better. Ive seen many people hate BS leagues and Ive seen many people thrive in them. Its just a matter of catching lightning in a bottle. I for one never have fun in leagues that are stunted activty wise. Royals GM is a good OOTP guy, but he never fit here. Not BBSBLs fault.
10. While we're talking about GMs cumming and going, let's chat about some of the newer guys around this league, some of whom you've never been in a league with before: greeme, Darell, bohsandos, Dale, kobe, etc. Who's impressed/ disgusted you the most with their GMing skills so far? We know kobe 'won' a World Series already, but of the others who has the next best shot?
First off Greeme and Kobe have been in BBS for awhile. So I know them both quite well. and I new both would be great Gms here. Greeme needs to learn value some more and Kobe needs to have prolonged success since he has a chip on his shoulder but they are already two of the more active fun members of the league.
I like Darell alot but I think hes had some bad luck and has kinda lost his interest a bit. I could be wrong but he seems kinda meh right now. Its hard to lose for so long. I hope he has a bit of luck in Arizona are fights for a moe to KC for a new start. He deserves it and co9uld be a perennial winner in the AL.
BOHS has been surprising solid. I think hes made some bad trades. I think he went a little too quick with his rebuild. But I think he wants to win and hes learning as he goes. Long term I think hell be ok. Just needs to learn from his mistakes.
Dale is a great addition. Really good funny dude. Probably has done more for the league in OT then in actual league activities. Seems to be a little hesitant to take the next step in his rebuild. Hopefully soon he steps up and becomes a contender. But overall a great hire. Also someone that has adjusted to BBS and flourished. Dale was a non poster and that is probably because of his frame of reference for what a sim league is. Once he realized what we wanted from him he obliged. It can be done.
11. I'm growing more and more disenchanted with 'friend' trades. The unholy triumvirate of Shale-Break-Drowe, and now the not-so-dynamic duo of Jah and Dave, are starting to push me over the edge. Is there any way to police these kind of trades? As a former commissioner how would you handle it?
You wont ever stop friends trades. Every GM expects more or less from each other member. Trade talks proceed. People get frustrated. They ask for more or less depending on those trade talks. If people know each other in real life small things get tossed back and forth. Ill throw in a beer next time we hang out, etc. I dont really have too many problems with it if the GMs are stable. If the Gms are stable then the team is stable and one or two trades doesnt do too much. I get more worried with someone like DRowe because it seems like he is perpetually on the chopping block. And obviously you need to step in when something is blatantly wrong or unbalanced. But nothing like that has happened. And tbh I think that most Gms here overreact and make things seem worse then they are. Just because a team makes a bad trade doesnt mean it should be reversed or that someone should step in. Everyone values differently. Dont overreact. I do know its frustrating though. But things will always frustrate you. They just move in cycles. Tomorrow youll be upset about how someone posts spending, or lack of positions in a trade. Its the wonderful life of a sim league commish.
12. One of my favorite questions to ask is how would improve the league? Is there a rule you'd like to see implemented? Maybe a rule taken away? Shoot for the moon on this one. I'll just Dikembe it anyways.
Oh boy. Love this stuff. K. Firstly I always envisioned the Franchise player rule different. I wanted a BRILL TIA. I wanted more ability to improve the player. TO create legendary true franchise players. Willie Mays. Mickey Mantle. Etc. Just huge guys. A BRILL TIA after making a player a franchise guy. Locked ratings forever. Maybe extra IRIs for development. Guys that literally will be with a team forever. 3000 hits. 300 wins. 600 homers. Etc.
I like most other things as is. I think the CEI and the tanking have been addressed. I think continuing to monitor inflation of ratings is important. I also think that lowering fake players ratings will be needed once we get there. Way too many BRILLS for fake rookies IMO.
13. Have you been keeping up with the Olympics at all? Do you prefer summer or winter? Favorite event?
I hate the olympics. Summer is better than winter. Somewhat interested in watching some of the major summer events if theyre on. But I never seek it out. Winter olympics are boring as fuck. Id rather watch a Kate Upton photo shoot tbh.
14. How are your feelings about the upcoming season for the real life Giants? Was there only major signing Mike Morse? Yikes...
Ya. Giants spent so much on their own players that they didn't have much room to add anything else. They did get Tim Hudson though, probably a bigger signing then Morse. They resigned Pence and Lincecum along with Javy Lopez. Hard to go to big on anyone else after that. I actually liked the Hudson and Morse signings. Low risk high reward types. Plus Pablo is entering a contract year and has lost 30+ pounds. He could be the biggest difference. Itll be tough in the West with the Dodgers though. They have an unlimited payroll and great pitching.
Right now I like the rotation for the Giants. Timmy needs to continue to learn how to pitch. Hudson should help with that. Cain and Vogie need bounce back years. Hudson needs to be solid. Bumgarner just needs to do what hes doing. The pen is solid. Romo/Casilla/Affeldt/Lopez/Machi. Then they have Hembree coming up this year. Pretty solid.
Offensively they should be better with Morse and a slimmed down Panda. Scutaro is supposedly healthier this year too. Blanco will move back to UT OF and 9th inning defensive replacement. Belt really came up last year.
Overall I still like the team alot and if they stay healthy they should be in the hunt. But they are older and they could fall apart.
15. So it's Valentine's Day... which member of BBSBL would you want to take out on a date? Where would you go? Would you buy them a gift? Would you expect them to put out?
This is a tough one because I find so many people here enjoyable. I think if I had to though Id pick Aaron. Ive known this dude so long. Would be nice to hang out with him have a couple beers. We could play horse. or 21. Then hit the bar. Have a couple IPAs. Take some beer notes. Learn the difference mosaic and citra hops. Maybe have some fish tacos. Go to a salsa bar. Hit up the local non chain DVD rental store. Get Fletch and Running Scared. Get a 12 pack of beer and hit the couch. I wouldnt expect Aaron to put out. Unless he wanted to.
