15. Manny Ramirez - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/r/ramiremanny782.html
Year - 2005
2005 was a great year for Manny. Some guys get older but Manny just gets better. At 33 years young he hit .312 with 42 home runs and 128 ribis. It could be argued that this wasn’t even Manny’s best season – he had a big year in 1997 and won the mvp in 2003 – but I have this one slightly above the others because of his average and because he became very difficult to strike out.
14. Todd Helton - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/h/heltontodd375.html
Year - 2003
Helton won his second straight mvp award in 2003. Kind of funny because his best year was in 2001. Helton led the league in runs and XR. He was also top 10 in BA, ob%, ops%, slg%, hits, total bases, doubles and rbis. For anybody else it would have been a career year but for helton it was just a little better than normal.
13. Nomar Garciaparra - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/g/garcianomar123.html
Year - 2004
Meh, I would love to leave him off the list just to annoy Break but I can’t. intellectual honesty and all that. Nomar was a beast, leading the league in BA, slg%, ops%, XR, hits, total bases and doubles. Only thing keeping him from the top 10 was homeruns.
12. Corey Patterson - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/p/pattercorey172.html
Year - 2002
The 2002 NL MVP is one of the best power/speed players in the league. He hit 32 hrs to go along with 59 sbs. He also hit .353. He was top ten in numerous categories: ba, slg%, ob%, ops, xr, hrs, sbs, runs, hits, tbs, rbis, Truly one of the all time great seasons.
11. Ken Griffey Jr. - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/g/griffeken426.html
Year - 1999
Ken Griffey Jr. is on this list three times, something no other player can say. Griffey is the best power hitter of all time and is the career leader in hrs and slg%. In 1999 he had the second most homeruns of all time, with 56. He also led the league in slg% and total bases as well as being 2nd in rbis. His batting avg was only .292 but he made up for that by walking 75 times.
10. Frank Thomas - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/t/thomasfrank407.html
Year - 1997
The Big Hurt certainly lived up to his nickname in 1997, putting the hurt on opposing pitchers and winning the AL MVP award. He hit 47 hrs, good for 9th all time. Oddly enough, Thomas hit exactly 47 homeruns on three separate occasions. He led the league in hrs and rbis and was 6th in BA about 35 points away from a triple crown.
9. Juan Gonzalez - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/g/gonzaljuan655.html
Year - 2000
Juan started the season off in the NL before being traded to Oak. Probably the only player to win back to back mvps in different leagues. Juan hit 49 hrs and knocked in 148 runs to go with a .342 ba. It would have been nice if he could have walked more but I guess that is nitpicking.
8. Ken Griffey Jr. - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/g/griffeken426.html
Year - 1998
2nd time we see Junior on this list. 1998 was the first of 2 mvp years for Junior. It was the first of 4 straight years leading the league in hrs. He also led the league in slg%. He hit .307 and was second in the league in walks with 102. He was also 2nd in rbis and ops and 3rd in runs and ob%.
7. Frank Thomas - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/t/thomasfrank407.html
Year - 1999
The Big Hurt shows up for the second time on this list with his 1999 MVP season. He set a record with 168 rbis to go along with his 47 hrs which were good enough for 2nd in the league. He also led the league in walks, ops and XR, was 2nd in slg%, 3rd in ob% and 7th in BA as well as being top 10 in a bunch of other categories.
6. Chipper Jones - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/j/joneschippe424.html
Year - 2000
Chipper hit at a .356 clip, good for third in the league. Combine that with a whopping 117 walks which led the league and was good enough for 9th all time. Not surprisingly he led the league in ob% at a .465 clip, good enough for 2nd all time. He was also top 10 in runs, rbis and hrs.
5. Larry Walker - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/w/walkerlarry447.html
Year - 1999
Where do I start? How about with I’m not sure how walker didn’t take the mvp in 1999. He led the league in BA, ob%, slg%, ops, XR, runs, hits, total bases, triples and sbs. Wow, that is insane. Also top 5 in doubles, hrs and rbis. Just an unbelievable all around year. Oh yeah, it wasn’t even his best year.
4. Todd Helton - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/h/heltontodd375.html
Year - 2001
This predated his back to back mvps but was arguably his best all around season. He had personal bests in hrs, ob%, slg% and XR. He was top 2 in the league in BA, ob%slg%, ops, xr and hits as well as top 5 in tbs, doubles, hrs and walks.
3. Larry Walker - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/w/walkerlarry447.html
Year - 1998
Now we really get to the cream of the crop. Walker’s 1998 MVP season was remarkable. He led the league in pretty much everything. Not even much of a point going through season rankings. The only thing that can do this year justice is to look at all time rankings.1st all time in runs and tbs, 8th all time in batting avg, 15th all time in ob%, 2nd all time in slg%, 1st all time in ops, 2nd all time in XR, 35th in hrs, 5th in rbis, 7th in hits, 18th in doubles.
2. Albert Pujols - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/p/pujolsalbert733.html
Year - 2005
Pujols’ 2005 mvp year is another season which can be put in perspective only by looking at the all time leaders. He broke the season record for batting average and ob%, and was 2nd in ops, 3rd in hits, 6th in xr, 8th in slg% and 10th in tbs. The scary thing is that he is only 25 and he will just get better.
1. Ken Griffey Jr. - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/g/griffeken426.html
Year - 2001
Junior’s final appearance on this list is at the top. The 2001 AL MVP still holds single season records for hrs and slg%. His 64 homeruns were 8 more than the previous record and his .726 slg% was 70 points ahead of the previous record. Those records will be on the books for a long time and are deserving of the top spot on this list.
