Obviously a very subjective list. Mostly looked at length of contract and cost as well as the player's talent level. I didn't really look at guys under 5 mil so the cheapest player on this list is Marty Cordova with a 7 mil contract. Soriano probably should be on this list the way people value him. Of course if Break has 2 guys on the list then he will give me a 1. There are a bunch of different types of players on the list: there are the older players who were probably worth the contract when they got it, international players that didn't pan out and guys who were signed over market value probably with the intent of resigning them cheap.
15. Rocky Biddle, Starting Pitcher, 29 yrs, Cincinnati Reds - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2297.html
Contract – $11,000,000 for 4 yrs
This might not look as bad in a year or 2. Biddle definitely has the ratings but his numbers have yet to catch up. Pitching in the nl, there is really no excuse to have a 4.28 era. He looked to have made a step forward in 2004 going 15-7 with a 3.58 era but then in 2005 he slid back to a 4.06 era. At this point, the contract still looks to be about twice what he should get.
14. Orlando "O.C." Cabrera, Shortstop, 31 yrs, Oakland Athletics- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2218.html
Contract – $10,000,010 for 1 yr
Cabrera is a function of the way fa works here. He is a decent hitter with some speed and a decent defender. No way is he worth 10 million but once somebody hits fa then somebody will overpay him and hope that he will resign cheap later. Cabrera’s avg. has been dropping steadily for the last 5 years. At this point in his career he is no more than a low end starter.
13. Ken "Junior" Griffey Jr., Centerfield, 36 yrs, Detroit Tigers - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p475.html
Contract – $18,000,000 for 1 yr
Junior is just a shell of his former self. Of course that shell is still capable of manning cf for almost any team in the league. His only problem is that he is making 18 mil a year, it is very hard to justify that salary unless the player is a superstar, present not past, and Griffey isn’t a superstar anymore. His 21 homers last year were his lowest in a full season since 1991 and he shows no signs of bouncing back.
12. Brad "Lights Out" Lidge, Reliever, 29 yrs, Seattle Mariners - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1805.html
Contract – – $10,000,000 for 1 yr
Whoever nicknamed Lidge “lights out” obviously had a sense of humor. Or maybe he was referring to the managers crying at night after another blown save. Either way Lidge has one magical season in his 7 years in the bigs, saving 30 games with a 1.61 era in 2004, and has been wholly mediocre besides that. His overall era is 4.67, definitely not deserving of an 8 figure contract maybe not even a seven figure one.
11. Aramis Ramirez, Third Base, 27 yrs, Boston Red Sox - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2343.html
Contract – $20,000,000 for 2 yrs
Only a few teams could afford to give Ramirez 20 mil but I guess that Break would rather pay him for 2 years and hope he resigns then have to fight for him in fa. Aramis has nice ratings but he isn’t elite. He should get 20+ homers and hit around .300. Easy starter for most teams but 20 mil? Nah.
10. Shawn Green, Rightfield, 33 yrs, New York (N) Mets- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p468.html
Contract – $15,750,000 for 1 yr
Green would be higher if his contract was any longer than a year. He managed about 6 hits for each million that he was paid last year. His power is gone, his doubles were done. Time to hang ‘em up Shawn.
9. Will Cunnane, Starting Pitcher, 31 yrs, Florida Marlins - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1443.html
Contract – $20,000,001 for 2 yrs
Cunnane might be too high on this list but his era jump by .64 is definitely worrying. What is even more worrying is that is the second straight season his era jumped by over half a run. Don’t get me wrong, a 3.38 era is fine but it just isn’t worth 20 mil.
8. Roy Oswalt, Starting Pitcher, 28 yrs, New York (A) Yankees
Tuesday, 4/1/2006 - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p946.html
Contract – $20,000,000 for 2 yrs
Similar to Cunnane but younger and hasn’t had major era drops the last 2 years. Still is a very good pitcher but there are definitely cheaper alternatives that will give you similar production.
7. Jermaine Dye, Rightfield, 32 yrs, Texas Rangers - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p347.html
Contract – $13,000,000 for 2 yrs
I had Dye for a few sims last year and spent most of my time trying to move his contract. I actually was given Ambres and Garko in order to take him off Nanz’s hands so that shouldn’t be surprising. He hasn’t had a .275 or better batting average in the last 5 years. He still has some pop in has bat and should be capable of stating for the duration of his contract. That said, 13 mil is way too much for what he brings to the table.
6. Heath "Heater" Bell, Starting Pitcher, 28 yrs, Anaheim Angels - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2151.html
Contract – $15,200,000 for 4 yrs
I really like Bell. I have tried to get him numerous times from Greg and we almost had a deal closed last night. On the other hand many gms wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole stating E duration. Personally I don’t see the big deal, I’m not really sure why his duration hasn’t been improved in the last few sts. If he had a B or a C then he could easily be worth that contract. His era has been south of 2.5 on average for the last few years so as long as he is on the mound his team does ok but when you have to hand the ball off for 3-4 innings a start that hurts your value.
5 Edgardo "Fonzie" Alfonzo, Second Base, 32 yrs, Colorado Rockies- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p14.html
Contract – $10,300,000 for 3 yrs
The truth is that Fonzie still produces and if you don’t realize where he plays his home games then you might think that he is worth 10 mil or close to that. He hits about twice as many home runs in Coors as well as hitting about 40 pts higher. Not a bad player away from Coors but not worth 8 figures.
4. Marty Cordova, Rightfield, 36 yrs, Houston Astros - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p271.html
Contract – $7,000,250 for 2 yrs
Easily the cheapest guy on this list. Also probably the only guy that shouldn’t start. He should platoon against lhps but probably shouldn’t start full time. Just look at his righty/lefty splits - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/CATO/players/c/cordovmarty847sp.html#batvsr. He absolutely kills lefties. He has hit .345 or better against them 3 of the last 4 years. In any case, since only about 25% of the pitchers are lefties there really is no reason to give that half of the platoon 7 mil.
3. J.C. Romero, Reliever, 29 yrs, Philadelphia Phillies- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1708.html
Contract – $8,000,000 for 3 yrs
Umm, CC? Lesson 1 – don’t bid on ratings, especially not the counterintuitive run rating. Lesson 2- Don’t bid on guys that are 29 with a 4 in walks. Romero is a Cordova type; studly against lefties not so much against righties. His career oavg againt lefties is .147 and against righties is .318. nuff said.
2. Masao Kida, Reliever, 28 yrs, Arizona Diamondbacks- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3174.html
Contract – $9,500,000 for 3 yrs
Nothing excites me about this guy. Mediocre guy who should be at the back end of the bullpen. Really just not good. No reason this guy got paid so much. If I remember correctly, his notes said that he was mediocre. Just don’t get it. FA fever.
1. Daisuke "Waste of 70 million dollars" Matsuzaka, Starting Pitcher, 26 yrs, Pittsburgh Pirates- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3337.html
Contract – $10,220,000, 7 years left
Ow. Decent stip that turned out bad. Bad st. ow. Ow. Ow. Well look at the bright side, at least the game doesn’t let you offer contracts for more than 7 years. Before st, I offered to take him off Pitt’s hands for a nominal fee but was turned down. All I can say is…….thanks.
15. Rocky Biddle, Starting Pitcher, 29 yrs, Cincinnati Reds - bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2297.html
Contract – $11,000,000 for 4 yrs

14. Orlando "O.C." Cabrera, Shortstop, 31 yrs, Oakland Athletics- bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2218.html
Contract – $10,000,010 for 1 yr
