Top Ten 1B Prospects - 2006
1. Richard Berkey - 20 - Arizona
G/A/F/B/A/A
Berkey looks like an absolute monster soon. If he wants to stay in Arizona though he'll most likely move to 3B or LF because of Adrian Gonzalez, the face of the Diamondbacks franchise, is blocking him at first. He may be on the block if he can't adapt to another position.
2. Jorge Cantu - 24 - Texas
G/B/P/G/G/B
Cantu does everything well that you want out of a first baseman. And his power isn't just limited to hitting home runs. He's got major gap power and will probably eclipse 50 doubles several times in his career. Never strikes out, and has a great eye. A .300/.380/.600 slashline could be in his future. Just had a great rookie campaign with 11 HR and 68 RBI. Power still needs to develop.
3. Prince Fielder - 21 - Tampa Bay
A/G/P/B/G/F
Fielder should be a great asset to Tampa in the future. Middle of the order power and a good eye at the plate. Once his power starts to show more the sky is the limit for his potential. He needs to be more patient at the plate, and strikes out too much because of his free swinging nature. Doesn't swing at bad pitches, but has holes in his swing. Solid defense.
4. Logan Morrison - 18 - San Francisco
G/G/F/A/G/G
Logan is somewhat of a mystery. He's still young and has a ton of potential. He needs to fill out and grow into his fram if he wants to hit for power, otherwise he may move to the outfield. He's got gap power already but can boost it to hit 30+ HR potential. Has long periods of slumping, but when he gets hot he's absolutely scary to face.
5. Angelo Hernandez - 21 - Baltimore
A/F/F/B/F/A
Light tower power, no eye at the plate, and holes in his swing. If he could fix one of those two problems he'd be a franchise 1B. Baltimore already has Cust at first, so another guy who might move to 3B or the oF in the future. That is if he makes the majors. Needs a lot of work but has great potential.
6. Mark Trumbo - 20 - San Francisco
G/G/F/G/A/A
Trumbo already has a lot of things going for him, except the fact that he plays for a team with a terrible park for hitters. He should be a good gap hitter and will probbly hit a lot more doubles than home runs unless he moves to a more hitter friendly park. A good fit for San Francisco though.
7. Casey Kotchman - 23 - St. Louis
G/G/P/G/F/B
Kotchman is ready to go, and should see a rookie Campaign in 2006. He almost never strikes out, but he doesn't walk a lot. Power potentiala is there, and has the athleticism to move to a middle infield position if need be without too much downside. Makes him very valuable to be so versatile.
8. Kendrys Morales - 22 - Milwaukee
G/G/P/G/F/A
Kendrys is a great hitter aside from his lack of discipline at the plate. It seems to be a widespread problem in the league at first base that the on base skills aren't there so you can't hurt him too much for it. Consistent, almost never goes through rough patches. What you see is what you get. .326/.354/.418 line in AA through 46 games bodes well for him.
9. Jon Canning - 20 - Pittsburgh
G/F/P/G/P/B
He keeps the ball in play, but his gap power leaves something to be desired. Never walks, and needs more discipline at the plate badly. Still has the tools to succeed at the MLB level though. Almost never makes errors.
10. Adam Lind - 22 - Minnesota
A/G/F/G/A/G
If he makes some strides at making contact with the ball more often, he will shoot up the ranks as a top prospect. Could see a move to the outfield in the future. Great gap power. Doesn't care about money just loves the game.
