Top 10 Catching Prospects - 2005
A Look At The Future of BBSBL
1. Jarrod Saltalamacchia - 21 - Blue Jays
B/F/P/G/A/G
Talk about light-tower power. This guy is gonna moonshot balls straight into the roof of the Skydome. With a little work, he could be an above average defender behind the plate, but right now he lacks a little at the glove. Isn't really a big deal when he's gonna be hitting .330/.380/.500 or better though. If he gets some patience at the plate he could be pushing .400 OBP every year.
ML Ready: 2007
2. Ryan Doumit - 24 - Twins
G/G/P/G/A/G
Doumit is going to be a gap hitting monster. If his power develops he could start hitting 20+ HR's a year behind the dish. His defense leaves something to be desired but at a premium position like catcher you can afford to lose some defense for a premier hitter. He should be ready to start opening day next year.
ML Ready: 2006
3. Mike Napoli - 23 - Royals
G/A/P/G/A/B
Napoli being brilliant in strikeouts is hilarious. He's gonna be a solid all around producer, but could use some help in the eye department. If he gets it, he'll definitely produce at a .280/.350/.450 line or so. Very valuable behind the plate numbers. Look for him to be starting opening day next year.
ML Ready: 2006
4. Ryan Hanigan - 25 - Expos
G/F/P/F/B/B
Hanigan is a rare breed. He's going to push a .400 OBP right off the bat and that's just so valuable. He's definitely a late bloomer though, and probably won't see more than 8 years in the league. He could easily be a leadoff/#2 hitter on any team in the league. Never strikes out. His OPS will suffer because of his extreme lack of power though. If you want a catcher that gets on first very, very often, you'd want no one better in the league. Should be ready by 07
ML Ready: 2007
5. James Urich - 21 - Rockies
G/A/F/G/A/B
Recently broke out for the Rockies this year. He's valuable, and with Hart manning the dish in Coors, I see him being dealt to a team that can use him in the future for pitching help. He'd even be viable at 1B in a place like Coors if he kept him though. His defense leaves a lot to be desired.
ML Ready: 2008
6. Alvaro Perez - 25 - Devil Rays
A/A/P/G/G/A
Alvaro Perez would be higher on the list if he wasn't on the brink of busting. At 25 he needs to get his act together and start playing at a major league level. He's got solid skills, and with some batting cage time he could become a top 10 catcher.
ML Ready: 2006
7. Chris Stewart - 23 - Red Sox
G/F/P/F/G/B
A poor mans Ryan Hanigan, he has speed Hanigan doesn't, making him more accessible as a top of the order hitter. He'll probably end up hitting .280/.340/.370 or so, but he's got speed and the potential to take 50 bags a year. Catchers that can run seems to be something Boston loves to have. Hitting .250 in his rookie year so far.
ML Ready: 2005
8. John Jaso - 21 - Angels
A/G/P/A/G/G
Jaso should be a good all around catcher, with some power and the potential to be a solid contact hitter. Average defender, nothing flashy but he gets the job done adequately. The Angels should be happy with a guy like him around.
ML Ready: 2007
9. Ronny Paulino - 24 - Royals
G/A/P/A/F/G
Lord only knows why Paulino is still sitting in AAA. Hitting over .350 the last two years, he's obviously been ready for the show for a while. With Napoli now also ready, they should either be starting at catcher/1B together on opening day next year, or one of them should be dealt. He's probably not too happy about his career being halted for so long.
ML Ready: 2006
10. Miguel Montero - Indians
A/A/F/G/F/B
Montero has a lot of power, but he's gonna hit balls sky high and not super far. Needs work on his overall game to become a better hitter at the plate. Puts the ball in play, but right at defenders too often. Needs to learn bat control if he wants to hit for average. Doesn't walk much at all, and shouldn't be anything more than a solid #6/#7 hitter behind stronger bats.
