2018 Red Sox Report: What An Awful Year
Boston, MA-- The 2016 Red Sox don't have much to be happy about concerning their major league club, as they finished a paltry 62-100. There were a few bright spots, such as the debut of SP Arthur Farwell, who threw to a 6-8 record with a 4.51 ERA in 111.2 innings of work. "Farwell is a work in progress, but he's got the tools to be a quality big league arm." remarked pitching coach Pedro Martinez, when asked about the young talent. Young closer Nolan Sanburn and just as young set up man Colby Suggs both look to improve next year, having had less than stellar outings this time around.
Boston hopes Closer Sanburn can become a top flight closer with some grooming
On the other side of the coin, CF Marty Dupree, acquired from Los Angeles in exchange for LF Joshua Fuller, showed signs of improvement both at the plate and in the field, playing a remarkable 100 games in CF with 0 errors while hitting a .270/.318/.358 slashline, the best of his career so far. Manager Nomar Garciaparra on Dupree, when asked for a quote on his performance since coming from LA:"He looks to continue improving next season and beyond, as his ceiling is still unkown." Newly acquired catcher Arismendy Alcantera turned heads by setting a club record 91 stolen bases in his first year here, and hopefully will continue that trend into the future. 2B Mookie Betts remains an enigma, as his performance yet again undercut what was expected of him as a top talent that has only stumbled constantly since his stellar rookie season. The front office is confused as to why he is not hitting for a better average, and are starting to wonder if his incredible .320/.343/.427 slashline was just a fluke. Hopefully next year he realizes his potential to a greater degree.
If you're so smart Mookie, you should try and figure out what's wrong with your game!
On the farm SS John Whitcomb and LF J.L. Wine are both looking to burst onto the scene as early as 2018, and both look to be big producers for the future of Boston. SP Guillermo Pagano, while stumbling a little in AAA, could see time at the majors, more likely as a relief pitcher than a starter. Boston has it's hopes high that SO Carlos Anaya can become something of a servicable major league arm, and somewhat hopeful on SP Dustin Redd as well, as both of them are close to putting the puzzle together, but neither has quite found their stride yet. CF Lee Watts showed incredible improvement, and looks to be a future burner off the bench instead of a AAA ceiling candidate, while 2B Charles Bolger looks to be a future utlility infielder for the club, but they hope he can be something more. Boston GM Steve Crowe, in reference to what he would say is the greatest need in his franchise at the moment, would be lack of SP depth, and an overall problem with pitching talent in the system as a whole. He hopes to address these issues via the next few drafts, and maybe a trade or two for some of the games top young starters after collecting more assets. "We're hoping to be back in title contention around 2023" He said on the future prospects of his club. "We're in for a long rebuild because we put a lot into our last run at the title, sadly coming up short twice in the World Series, but we hope it won't be much longer than that if at all."
