With this article, I factor in production, talent ratings, contract, and age for the true outcome of their value…I weigh talent ratings along with age more, and this could be a good guide to see who truly the best valuable SS on the market is. Here we go:
Top 10 MLB SS
1. Xander Bogaerts- MIN- Age 23- As easy as it gets, folks. Xander might be the most valuable piece in the league right this moment. He sports a B/G/B/B/B talent line with solid defense to go with it. He is also loyal which doesn’t mean you have to franchise him, but I think he’s a guy that needs to be franchised regardless. If that were to happen, Singleton has to get traded which could be happening as I write this. Bogaerts has had two underwhelming years, but this season he should be a lot better, and the following year will probably be when he starts to take over. He has only been reversed once, and has had his TIA and TIB used. All of his IRIs are available, too. He has a chance to battle with Mike Trout as the best player in the game once Miggy retires.
2. Alberto Morello- PITT- Age 27- Well, acquiring Harvey and this guy was the best trade I’ll ever pull off. His latest positive PD made him into a true superstar. Brilliant HIT/HR talent rating is special. He plays solid defense, and I could TIB his speed or defensive range at short if I want, too. He steals 30+ bags with his D/A look so that’s nice. His first two years with me have been really, really good. I’m expecting him to raise his game this year, and become a true superstar. He hasn’t been reversed yet as well. He’s had back-to-back 200 hit seasons for me with 40+ doubles, 100+ runs, and 100+ RBIs. Love him at the 2-hole.
3. Andrelton Simmons- TEX- Age 26- He is one well, rounded player. He has a G/G/G/B/G/G with A/C stealing and a .997 fielding %: B Range. I’d love to have this guy on my team. You can TIB his speed, and make him a base stealer to match his crazy power. His rookie year was a struggle, but he has gotten off to a crazy start to show that he is ready to take over this league with his tools. He’s been reversed just once. He’s going to be a big part of the Texas rebuild, and they are really starting to assemble some talent down there.
4. Raimel Tapai- ATL- Age 22- I got two similar guys coming up, talent-wise. I go with Tapai here as he’s only 22 years old, and already looks the part. He produced last season, and should only get better once his HR talent develops. He has the ability to steal, and can even be taken to A/A if HF decides to…not totally necessary. He’ll give you really good defense which is always key when playing the short stop position. He has been reversed just once so he’s in good shape, I think. HF has always stayed away from even making this guy available, and with good cause. He’s a fabulous player, and a huge part of helping the Atlanta Braves here in the future.
5. Kolten Wong- NYY- Age 25- Remember when I was hatin’ on this guy? Yeah, I’m an idiot. Wong is a hit machine with the ability to hit a ton of doubles, too. This guy has a legit chance at getting to 3,500+ hits, 1,000+ steals, and 600+ doubles. Insanity. This is his 8th year in the league already! He’s due up for a contract so that’ll be interesting to see what he signs for. He has all of his reversals, and has been TIAd and TIBd. He has three IRIs left which he doesn’t particularly need. This is a guy that will do big things for quite some time. Oh, and yeah he’s a pretty good defender, too.
6. Dee Gordon- SEA- Age 27- He’s basically Wong if he gets a damn TIA to his double talent. He can be IRId fully, and so if we had a true active GM…this player could be really scary. He’s amassed over a 1,000 hits thus far, and is a steal MACHINE. Dude has attempted over 100 steals every season besides one (attempted 91 in 2014). That is just insane. A supreme talent on a clueless GM’s team…what a shame.
7. Jurickson Profar- OAK- Age 23- His youth, and his complete game has him at [HASH]7. He has good talents across the board (one of the few I bet), and also showcases his speed as well. Once he develops, his game should evolve into a perennial all-star. He has had his walks reversed both times, and has been IRId once. Still, I’m a fan of this guy, and he’s actually in year four of his young career which shows you how quickly he made it to the show. Broph’s future infield is looking really nice.
8. Hanley Ramirez- CHI- Age 32- Well, he’s this low because of age and contract. Otherwise, if he’s a few years younger, he’d probably be 2nd. By far my favorite player, and probably the toughest guy I had to deal in this league. He’s just a complete, all around stud. He had the ability to hit a ton of doubles, steal at an efficient rate, and now hit 30+ HRs. Han-Ram has already amassed 2,200+ hits, 640+ doubles, 100+ triples, 295+ home runs, and 730+ steals. He’s won the gold glove four times as well to prove that he was the ultimate 5-tool guy. When it’s all said and done, Hanley has a chance to go down as one of the greatest of all time. He just won his first championship with Play. He could win a few more provided Play keeps him around. I still think 2014 was one of the best all around seasons you will ever see from a player. He hit 54 doubles, 8 triples, 48 home runs, and stole 68 bases. He was two home runs off from going 50/50. Hanley is basically all camped besides having two reversals left. What a player.
9. Ernest Backus- LAD- Age 24- I didn't realize Dale had called him up, but anyway…Backus is a kid that has the potential to be a nice power source for Dale’s team in a couple of years. The Dodgers are steadily making gains, and Backus is one of the reasons. He has been TIAd, but otherwise is untouched which makes him a nice valuable piece at the tender age of 24. I’m looking forward to seeing if Dale can build a winner around his young core.
10. Scott Sizemore- FLA- Age 31- Yes, I left off a 33 year old David Wright, Shale. He makes a lot, and really isn’t a complete player for me to put him on the list. Also, yes I left off a guy that can’t play defense, but has very good offensive talent in Aledmys Diaz. Anyway, let’s talk about Sizemore who CAN play defense at a high level as his ratings show. He’s also a really nice hitter, too. He has all of his reversals remaining which helps his value immensely at this stage of his career. He has been IRId, but not a big deal since he’s a steady contributor. Just another fine Marlins player that cracks the list.
Honorable Mentions: David Wright (COL: Age 33), Aledmys Diaz (SD: Age 25), Jung-Ho Kang (NYM: Age 29), and Hak-Ju Lee (SD: Age 25)
Top 3 MLB SS Prospects
1. Carlos Correa- FLA- Age 21- Yuck, just another young tantalizing Marlins prospect. Correa has been reversed twice thus far, but has been untouched besides that. He will have big time power with a good sense of being patient as well. He should be a solid defender, too.
2. Thomas Lanza- ANA- Age 19- He’s young and pretty damn developed for his age. He’ll be a smart base runner, and will have a blend of power and discipline, too. He has been reversed twice, and he is very young so that could be an issue eventually. I’m interested to see how Spencer gets this guy on his team.
3. Francisco Lindor- TOR- Age 22- He recently got a nice PD, and looks to be an excellent future leadoff hitter for Game. His ability to get on base should be huge because once he gets on…he should be able to steal early and often. He only has one reversal left so that’s a huge issue, but I still like the player very much.
Bash away, folks!
