With this article, I factor in production, talent ratings, contract, and age for the true outcome of their value…I weigh talent ratings along with age more, and this could be a good guide to see who truly the best valuable 2B on the market is. Here we go:
Top 10 2B
1. Jose Altuve- ARI- Age 25- Pretty tough call between these two fabulous guys at the top of the list, but I’ll lean with Altuve because he’s the perfect leadoff hitter. Brilliant’s across the board besides his HRs/3Bs…A/A speed with already exceptional defense. Yes, he’s playing at Short Stop right now, but pretty clear he’ll be valued at 2B so that’s where I will place him at. He can even be TIBd at SS to make him an attractive option there, but that’d be a waste. I suppose save that just in case he takes a hit with his speed. Darell just IRId him four times, but those were needed to take him to that next level. His coming out party came this past season, and with his hits/2Bs rating sitting at 10’s…I’m expecting a monster year for him and the D’Backs.
2. Scooter Gennett- FLA- Age 25- Pretty easy choice here…he has been a staple of the Marlins lineup, and the crazy thing is he’s the team’s fifth hole hitter. Through five seasons, he has already amassed over 200+ doubles and 100+ home runs. He’s been IRId four times like Altuve, and he has been reversed just once...I’ve been a fan of this guy for awhile now. Anybody with Brilliant talents in hits and HRs gets my vote. Not to mention his stellar defense. Scooter is due for a new contract so that should be interesting to see what kind of deal he will command with the Marlins. Potentially could change his value for better or worse…we shall see.
3. Mookie Betts- BOS- Age 23- He had a phenomenal rookie campaign, and he should be able to build off of that as he continue to develop. He has only been reversed once, but has otherwise been untouched which makes him even more attractive since he has a TIA available. You can also get his speed up to B/A which will make him a top leadoff hitter for years to come. Bad news for Mookie is…Break is the GM, and this team is in for a longgggg rebuild.
4. Jedd Gyorko- MIN- Age 27- I’ve been in talks with this player a few times now and I’ve always liked his ability. He’s had two solid years of production to start his career, but he does need to get his average up. He is off to a good start, but I’d definitely IRI his hits in the near future. His defense is fine, and he’ll be an extra base machine for the Twins. Very nice player here.
5. Matt Carpenter- CHI- Age 30- Hey, it’s another Cub player! I didn’t realize Carpenter has crept into his 30s, but he is a really solid player. I don’t think he’s as good as he could have been, but I still like the player. I’m really not sure why Play hasn’t IRId him yet. I would IRI his walks for sure. He’s a very solid defender, and hasn’t been reversed yet which is awesome.
6. Conor Gillaspie- ATL- Age 28- I had this guy, and before a nice PD…I traded him for Albert Pujols for a season. Kind of back fired on me guys. He’s a really solid player, and has only been IRI’d twice. He’s been solid the past two seasons as he’s hit 49 home runs in those seasons. He could use a TIA to his walks which if that was done awhile ago would’ve potentially had him higher on this list. He is due for a raise coming up this offseason. Still, I like the player and I think this is a good spot for him.
7. Jose Nunez- MON- Age 26- I don’t think this is the position he’ll be playing in the future, but right now that’s where he’s slotted. I’m a fan of this player, and I have had short talks about possibly bringing him to Pittsburgh…then realized I was dealing with Kobe. Anyway, a TIB to his stealing ability will give him the ability to swipe some bags. Just not a fan of the A/B look, though. He has his entire IRIs available, and if anyone can talk about the use of IRIs…Kobe is your man!!! All in all, a really solid player here.
8. Jason Kipnis- SD- Age 29- I’ve actually had talks with Greeme about this player, but nothing ever extensive. I’m guessing he has three reversals left, and his TIA has been used. I’m perplexed why he hasn’t been IRId yet. This is a guy that desperately needs it since his production has been underwhelming thus far. He’s had one really good year, and besides that he has been decent at best. He’s another player that is looking for a new contract, and it’ll be interesting to see what Greeme does with him.
9. Robinson Cano- NYY- Age 33- He’s been a great player over the course of his career…he’s on his way to having over 600 doubles and 200 home runs plus has already amassed over 1,000 RBIs and runs. A career average of .315 has showed how good of a professional hitter he is. No reversals left, but probably not a big deal because he’ll turn 34 soon enough to negate that anyway. Great career.
10. Andy Marte- PITT- Age 32- I love Marte, and he’s a perfect, cheap option for me at the bottom of the order. I mean, I’ll take his production over the last two years with that contract any day of the week. Having said all of that, he probably wouldn’t be on this list if 2B had any type of depth. He’s been a really good player with me, and finally found his hitting stroke. Great contract, and still has a few reversals left.
Honorable Mentions: Everth Cabrera (BAL: Age 29)
Top 3 MLB 2B Prospects
1. Addison Russell- CHI- Age 22- Well, fuck. Another Cub. Russell is a very nice young player with the ability to have some speed if both TIBs are used. I’m a huge fan of this player.
2. Ernest Backus- LAD- Age 24- His TIA has been used, but he’s otherwise untouched basically. Dale is finally getting some young talent flowing into his organization which should excite him in a few seasons.
3. Sean Coyle- MIL- Age 24- A TIA to his hits, and a TIB to his stealing ability…and he’s an absolute stud. Granted, we have no GM currently so that’s a huge issue and plays a role. Hopefully, we can get a GM in here to capitalize on this young talent.
Bash away, folks!
