With this article, I factor in production, talent ratings, contract, and age for the true outcome of their value…I weigh talent ratings along with age more, and this could be a good guide to see who truly the best valuable SP on the market is. Here we go:
Top 10 NL SP
1. Chris Sale- CHI- Age 26- He’s emerged as Chicago’s best starter within these past couple seasons. His ERA has been under 2 both seasons, and he’s got a full array of his IRIs to be used as well. Scary stuff. He’s been reversed, and I’m assuming it’s only one category, but not entirely sure on that. He is also on a team friendly deal for his services. Anyway, Play knows how to win, and he knows you need a true cornerstone on the pitching side of things to get it done. He owns the greatest SP of this league’s history, and he quite possibly could own the next.
2. Jose Fernandez- SD- Age 23- Interesting debate here, but when it’s this close…reversals matter. Yes, he’s franchised, and he’ll be fine with Greeme. However, if Greeme wants to move him then teams need to know he’s one bad PD hit away from not being as legendary as he could be. Let’s talk about the player…he’s really not done anything as Greeme has been trying to further his progress along. He’s finally ready to contribute this season as his number ratings are making strides. He’s the 3rd player that possesses all brilliants, and he backs it up with a B in duration. He’ll be a stud for Greeme, and I really don’t think he should ever consider to move him unless he gets blown away.
3. Patrick Corbin- SD- Age 26- Last year’s Cy Young winner had his coming out party, and he was dominant for the emerging Padres. He’s the definition of a work horse as he’s had 3 consecutive seasons of 20+ CGs. That’s quite simply unheard of. Not even Johan or Marky B have done that. Corbin is a perfect fit in San Diego as he can hide his HR troubles in a spacious field. He’s got 3 IRIs left, and only just used one of his reversals so he’s in a really good spot going forward. This was a tough decision for me deciding between Corbin and…
4. Wade Miley- CHI- Age 29- I decided to put Corbin ahead because of the gap in age, and Miley’s PD reversal system. In saying that, Miley is fabulous. He’s had some camping, but still has his entire IRIs left. Play can really boost his Aces to a higher level which is scary. Miley is on an awesome deal, and who wouldn’t want to play for Play? Miley has been spectacular the past two seasons with ERAs of 2.22 and 2.06. Cubs are going to be a force to be reckoned with, folks.
5. Josh Collmenter- COL- Age 30- Yes, he’s 30, but I don’t care. This guy is money in the bank year in and year out. He was a model of consistency for me during his 4 years here. ERA was always around 2.35 for the most part. He has been camped, but still has all of his reversals left which will help him stay afloat for the foreseeable future. Shale makes a great move here in acquiring this Ace. You can book Collmenter for 20+ wins, an ERA below 2.5, and 200+ Ks.
6. Alex Torres- ARI- Age 28- This is a guy who has had a ton of PDs (good and bad), but he looks really good as of right now. The best part for Darell (I spelled it right) is that he has all of his reversals left which makes him even more attractive. The bad news is that he cannot be improved via IRIs. Still, this is a guy that put together a really good season for the competitive D’Backs, and he’s only getting better. Let’s see if Darell can actually make the playoffs for once with Spencer in rebuild mode.
7. Willie Derrico- OAK- Age 25- Not sure if this is too low, BUT his PD reversals being used (I’m assuming 2 left) are cause for concern. However, he has all of the important brilliant talents, and with A duration could mature into an absolute stud. Broph also has the ability to IRI him so that will really help as well. I like him a lot, and he is also loyal which should help Broph lock him up on a team friendly contract.
8. Miguel Gonzalez- SD- Age 29- Another Greeme SP…how did this happen, fellas? Anyway, he can be IRId fully, and has all of his reversals. He’s coming off of a solid rookie campaign, and should be even better. If I’m Greeme, I’d IRI him right away since he’s on the verge of turning 30. Maximize his peak. Also, he’s got a nice contract so he’s not killing Greeme’s financials.
9. Duane Ford- SD- Age 27- I almost forgot about this guy, and then realized how valuable he really is. His contract is obviously awesome, and Greeme did a good job of working the system there. He’s been below the 3s in ERA, and he’s only making a little over 2 million per year for the rest of his career basically. He can even be IRId to help out his numbers a little more, and still has 4 reversals left. I’m a fan of this guy, and thought I nearly got him. Unbelievable, 4 of the top 9 belong to Greeme.
10. Mark Appel- CHI- Age 24- I put Appel in these rankings and the main reasoning is age, and the potential to develop his brilliants. He’s got 5 reversals left so he’s in fine shape there. The biggest thing is getting that HR talent number to a 6. If he can get to that number, and keep it…then look out. I’m trusting Play in his ability to make this kid into a stud. Really looking forward to seeing how he’ll perform in due time.
Honorable Mentions: Stephen Strasburg (OAK: Age 27), Miguel Gonzalez (SEA: Age 31), Jin-Young Kim (TEX: Age 23), David Price (CHI: Age 30)
Top 3 NL SP Prospects
1. Lucas Sims- OAK- Age 21- He’s been reversed a couple of times, but no one is even close to him right now. B/G/B/G/G is really nice, and he’s basically ready to be called up. I’m going to assume Broph calls him up, but we shall see.
2. Georges Wilson- CLE- Age 20- The number two overall pick looks pretty solid. I don’t think he should’ve been taken at two, but he should help out D-Rowe who needs a little bit of everything right now.
3. Amir Garrett- LAD- Age 23- Dale has a nice, young pitcher here. He can be fully camped besides his TIA being used.
Bash away, folks!
