2006 Mock Draft - Pitching Heaven
This draft features enough quality starting pitching to usher in a new era of dominance
1. SP Clayton KershawB/B/B/A/B
A Duration
Kershaw and Lincecum are a toss up. Are you feeling lucky punk? These two are going to be the top 2 for a LONG time. I'd take Kershaw simply because of age.
2. SP Tim Lincecum
B/B/B/A/B
A Duration
Lincecum may come with some strings attached if Erbes is feeling the draft is a bit to strong on pitching. Either way he should be a monster and almost major league ready from the get go.
3. SP Mat Latos
B/B/B/G/G
A Duration
I didn't expect this out of him, but Latos flies under the radar a lot and has stellar ratings to show for it. Watch out for this guy to be the steal of the draft if he drops. Not to mention his cats' name is Cat Latos.
4. 1B/OF Allen Craig
B/B/P/G/F/G
D/D Speed
Allen Craig is simply awe-inspiring. He'll hit you 50 doubles a year to go with 20+ HR's or more if he develops well. Doesn't walk enough, but keeps the ball in play.
5. 3B Evan Longoria
G/B/F/G/G/A
D/C Speed
Who said the 2005 draft was the best? This train just keeps rolling. Evan at 5 is just ridiculous. Could have some speed if he works on it, good on the basepaths already. Doubles machine.
6. SP Max Scherzer
G/G/B/G/B
B Duration
There are years where this would be the first pitcher taken. Not this time. Scherzer as the 4th best pitcher in the draft is scary. K rates through the roof.
7. SP Brandon Morrow
B/G/G/F/B
D Duration
Another guy who flies under the radar but has recently increased in draft stock. He walks too many batters, but his stuff is so lights out that it may not matter. A bit of a risk, but passing on him may be a regret.
8. 3B David Freese
G/G/P/A/A/G
D/D Speed
Freese looks pretty, but he has some work to do. He won't make the majors for a while but if he pans out he'll be a guy you want in the 5/6 spots of a solid lineup.
9. SP Doug Fister
A/G/B/B/A
A Duration
Yet again we have a pitcher that would go top 5 in most drafts. Fister knows how to keep the ball in the yard and in the strike zone. His stuff isn't the best, but his command is impeccable. Greg Maddux would be proud.
10. 2B Daniel Murphy
G/B/F/F/F/A
D/B Speed
Doubles machine that recently worked hard to improve his game on the basepaths. His versatility at defense will make him a valuable commodity. Knows how to play 2B, 3B, 1B, and LF at major league levels.
11. 1B Chris Davis
A/G/P/G/A/F
E/E Speed
Slugger and not much else. He'll belt you doubles and home runs but those will be the majority of his hits. He could turn into a good average hitter if he closes up the holes in his swing.
12. SP Justin Masterson
G/G/B/A/G
C Duration
Masterson keeps the ball in play and has excellent stuff. If he can fix his control issues he will be a dominant mid rotation pitcher. With work he'll throw 200+ innings every year.
13. OF Jon Jay
G/G/F/F/A/B
D/D Speed
Jay is a bit of a wildcard. He's got good gap power, but not much actual power. He'll almost never strike out, and is sure to keep the ball in play more often than not. Could be a solid #2 hitter in the future.
14. SP Jeff Samardzija
G/G/B/A/B
E Duration
Samardzija looks like a star. But upon closer inspection his arm strength and ability to go deep in games comes into question. May end up in the bullpen, but has potential to be a stud pitcher.
15. SP Derek Holland
G/G/G/G/A
B Duration
Every team wants a guy like this at the back end of the rotation. Solid stuff and all around game with the ability to eat innings and save the bullpen when they need it most. Who doesn't want that 'stache?
16. SP Ian Kennedy
G/G/G/A/G
B Duration
Comparisons to Holland don't seem to stop. He's got similar stuff but his control needs more work. He tends to punch out guys a little more often too.
17. Desmond Jennings
A/A/G/A/A/G
C/B Speed
Possible leadoff hitter, needs to hit with more consistency. His power numbers spike and then deflate at almost random, his power is a mystery. Speed and intelligence on the basepaths. Constant threat to steal.
18. MR Kris Medlen
G/G/B/B/G
B Duration
Great stuff, with some durability work he could start, but wouldn't go further than 6 innings most of the time. Could close with ease and would make an elite set up already.
19. CL Daniel Bard
B/B/B/F/B
C Duration
Typical closer package. Wild, but has the best 2 seam fastball we've seen in a long long time. Possible starting future if he can work out his control issues, but for now he looks like a top flight closing option.
20. CL Andrew Bailey
B/B/B/G/B
E Duration
Best stuff out of the closers in the class. History of injuries. If he can stay away from them he'll be one of the best closers of all time.
21. OF Domonic Brown
A/A/F/G/A/B
C/C Speed
Could be one of the better all around players in the game. Needs a LOT of work to get there though. He's got the tools and the drive though, so don't bet against him.
22. CL Joba Chamberlain
G/G/G/A/B
B Duration
Good stuff, lights out and the usual control issues that come with closers. Could start with some work on his delivery.
23. CL Chris Perez
B/B/G/A/B
D Duration
In a class filled with closers, this guy is still top shelf quality. What a class for them. People with multiple 1sts could build an entire bullpen.
24. SP Luke Hochevar
A/G/G/G/A
D Duration
Starting to get iffy on choices for non-closers, but some teams already have a bunch of nice relief help. Hochevar is a classic case of could be great but will probably be average. Can't get his shit together.
25. MR David Robertson
B/B/B/F/B
D Duration
Another prototypical closer, how many is that now, 8? The amount of power arms in this draft is definitely the most prodigious in the history of BBSBL and may never be seen again.
26. OF Craig Gentry
G/F/F/P/P/B
C/B Speed
Gentry might go a lot higher since GM's value contact tool greatly in this league He's a true burner on the paths and could easily become a star due to his speed and contact skills.
27. SP Trevor Cahill
A/G/G/A/A
B Duration
Cahill has all the ability in the world but hasn't put it together yet. Reliable innings eater for now, but has top end potential in the right situation.
28. 3B Danny Valencia
A/G/P/A/P/G
D/E Speed
Valencia is pretty average on the scale of current 3B as the league is currently weak on them. Good pickup in the late 1st, could go higher though.
29. OF Drew Stubbs
F/A/A/A/A/F
C/C Speed
Stubbs could be a monster with a little luck from the development gods. Look out for him to burst onto the scene if he develops correctly.
30. OF Josh Reddick
F/A/F/G/A/A
E/B Speed
Reddick is your typical swing for the fences corner OF. With some fine tuning he could be a 30 HR hitting RF with the potential to break a .250/.300/.430ish line.
Bonus Round:

A/G/B/F/G

A/G/F/A/F/G

A/A/G/A/G
C Duration

A/G/G/A/A
B Duration

A/A/A/A/G
