And now we move onto the NL comparisons.
Aaron - Pharrell
Unfortunately, Aaron is no longer with us..at least for now. But regardless, he has been a longtime GM, so it was only right to include him here.
Aaron was one of the tougher matches for me to come up with, but then, Pharrell's big hit "Happy" came to mind and I realized that that's one of the great qualities Aaron brought to BBSBL. For the most part, he did his best to keep everyone happy and in good spirits. He tried to make light of things that were going on and make this forum that much more fun to be around. Pharrell is one of the more easy going personalities in rap generally speaking. He's an upbeat person and has been a great producer for years and a solid rapper too for N.E.R.D in particular.
Pharrell also has recently added a cowboy hat to his wardrobe and being that Aaron now lives in Texas full-time, there's a good chance he's rocking the cowboy hat regularly himself.
Ashes - The Notorious B.I.G.
Now that he has won his third championship and has a fourth World Series appearance as well, Ashes now has the most complete BBSBL resume of anyone. In other words, he should now be considered the most successful GM in league history. And with the team he currently has, this success could continue to last for many seasons to come. What an empire this guy has put together! It could very well turn into the greatest dynasty we've ever seen.
Because Ashes is now [HASH]1, it's only right that he is compared to who I and many others consider the greatest rapper of all time: The Notorious B.I.G. Biggie unfortunately did not live long enough to put out a bunch of albums. But the two albums he did while living (Ready to Die in 1994 and Life After Death in 1997) are widely considered two of the greatest albums ever. Life After Death is also one of only seven rap albums to ever do diamond (in other words, over 10 million records sold).
Biggie had everything as a rapper. The vicious bars. The charisma. The attention. His crew that would become Junior MAFIA. The ability to switch up his flow and rap about all different kinds of stuff. He could destroy someone on one song and then do a classic like "Juicy" on the next track. His albums were full of hits from actual singles with music videos to classic ghetto songs such as "The What", "Unbelievable", "Kick in the Door", "Notorious Thugs", and "My Downfall", among others. He wouldn't necessarily rap just to rap. He was an amazing storyteller and described vivid stories of his life and would put together great fictional stories as well. Biggie will forever be rap's "King of New York", and when you factor in his huge impact on rap across the country, and particularly in New York, he was the best that ever did it. Rest in peace!
Bosoxi - Masta Killa
Masta Killa is an original member of the Wu-Tang Clan, but one of the more quiet members of the group. He didn't release his first solo album until 2004, 11 years after the Wu-Tang Clan's debut group album. It was a relatively successful album and his second album two years later was good too. But Masta Killa still never became a superstar like other members of the Wu did. His career is a good way to summarize Bosoxi's time here as well. He's been around, but has been quiet. He's won some games, but never reached that next level of success so far, being that the Cardinals have yet to make the postseason. I dunno if Bosoxi smokes a lot of weed and is a vegan like Masta Killa is, but the aforementioned similarities are certainly good enough.
Dale/Rooster - Slick Rick
Old school rap legend Slick Rick was one of the first notable rappers to have a big impact on hip-hop and was arguably one of the greatest storytellers rap has ever seen. Listen to "Children's Story" for further proof. And around here, what does Dale do better than just about everyone else? He tells amazing stories that everyone listens in on and enjoys to read about.
Dale may not be from England like Slick Rick and most likely does not have an eye patch, but no one can argue that both of them have and more than likely will continue to tell us amazing stories.
Danchevy - Diddy
Diddy, formerly known as Puff Daddy and later, P. Diddy has been one of the most successful people in hip-hop for at least the past 20 years. Diddy of course is much better known as a producer and label head than an actual rapper. He was Biggie's producer and hype man in the 90s and would later do the same for Ma$e after Biggie's death. He also helped start up the careers of The LOX, a trio of Yonkers rappers that include Jadakiss, Styles P. and Sheek Louch. And it's his past relationship with The LOX that got him to this particular comparison.
To make a long story short, both Danchevy and Diddy tried to get away with some sleazy tactics, but it didn't end up working out in their favors. While Danchevy got caught and later finally admitted to briefly running 2 BBSBL teams at the same time, Diddy ended up screwing over The LOX for years by earning around 50% of their publishing after they left Bad Boy records in favor of the Ruff Ryders. And this was after The LOX made actual protests just to get released from their contract with Bad Boy.
The infamous Hot 97 phone call incident in 2005 was a climax between Diddy and The LOX after a heated conversation on live radio between them occurred. Eventually, a settlement was finally worked out and The LOX members got their full publishing back. Since then, Diddy and The LOX have been getting along on much better terms and hopefully, the same could later be said about Danchevy here as he is now back in the fold running the Mets.
It's wrong for people to do shady things like screw over the publishing for other people in music or run 2 teams in a sim league, but things can always get worked out in hopes of a better future and the people at fault learning from their mistakes.
Darell - Bun B
This may not the strongest comparison here, but Darell and Bun B are both Houston natives that have been around OOTP and hip-hop respectively for a long time, but always kept a low profile.
Darell is one of the most active GM's here for sure and has been around OOTP for years and years, but is very quiet about his personal life in particular and doesn't talk about it all that much. He is a big fan of Houston teams though and proudly reps his city. For the most part, Darell is one of the most calm GM's in this league and rarely shows anger or emotions. But he's perfectly ok with sliding under the radar because that's just who he is.
Bun B is one of, if not the most well known rapper to ever come from Houston. He came to fame as one half of UGK, which also consisted of the late Pimp C. Without his former partner around, Bun B now has a full-time solo career, which has been very successful. Yet despite being one of the most notable rappers from Houston, Bun B rarely, if ever makes headlines in the news for erratic behavior, among other things. He is never discussed among the best rappers alive, even though he should at least be in the discussion. But more than likely, he will continue to be underrated by the mainstream fans and never respected generally speaking as much as he should. However, it wouldn't be too surprising if he didn't care because of the low profile he keeps.
HeatFlash - Wiz Khalifa
2 young potheads that are somewhat new at what they do? Yeah this is a perfect match between HF and Wiz. HF was real active at first, but has slacked in the past month or two and hasn't been around as much. But he did make some huge frenzy trades. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be too late for his Braves to catch up to the Marlins. If HF doesn't get too sidetracked and stays focused here, he could being the Braves back to the postseason. It won't necessarily be the 90s all over again if/when it happens, but that team now has a lot of potential.
Wiz Khalifa has now become one of the most popular rappers today. He is a free spirited pothead and arguably the best rapper to ever come out of Pittsburgh. It will be tough for him to really rise up all-time ranks just because of the very high standard set by his predecessors, but right now, Wiz has a lot going for him and even has a son.
Good luck to both of them on their future endeavors.
Jordan - Kendrick Lamar
Jordan is one of the newer GM's here and is trying to do what he can to revive the Phillies into a good team. Similarly, Kendrick Lamar is the next big thing from Compton and trying to have a big career like his local predecessors, which include everyone in NWA, as well as Coolio and The Game, among others. I don't know too much else about Jordan just yet to really judge his personality, so I will leave it at that.
Kobe - Gucci Mane
I could have gone a lot of different directions with Kobe's rapper comparison. I considered Vanilla Ice because of his "Ice Ice Baby" one hit wonder and the fact that Kobe's 2004 championship was the only great team that he has had...and he didn't even put that team together himself!
I also considered other rappers like Soulja Boy, Ja Rule and even the worst rapper to ever enter the industry: Kevin Federline. But ultimately, I decided to be nice to Kobe and select Gucci Mane for him.
Gucci Mane hasn't been the most successful rapper ever, but he's been solid among southern rappers from Atlanta for sure. Most of Gucci's lyrics though have had to do with selling cocaine and having money and other good shit in life. He pretty much became a typical southern rapper that was describing the luxurious life he lives...or at least claims he lives. And that ice cream tattoo on his face just cannot be ignored. However, things haven't always been wonderful for Gucci. He's had quite a legal past of his own and recently accepted a plea deal that will likely result in around 3 more years of jail time. Have fun with that, Gucci!
Had Kobe, who of course is a well known cocaine addict lived in Atlanta instead of Alabama, he probably would have been one of Gucci's most notable customers. It's too bad. Kobe would have had the the time of his life and Gucci would have been that much wealthier. Hopefully though, Kobe stays out of trouble and doesn't do anything stupid, so that he can avoid having to spend as much time locked up as Gucci has.
Kobe and Gucci both love talking about cocaine and haven't done as much in BBSBL and rap respectively in comparison to their peers.
Play - Tupac
Play has been one of the most dominant GM's in league history. He led the Cubs to 8 consecutive NL Central division titles from 2000-2007. He won the 2005 World Series and has won three NL pennants as well. But Play has been more than just one of the most successful GM's in BBSBL. He's been the emotional glue of BBSBL and has been as passionate as anyone about everything involving this league. No matter what, Play will put the greater good of this league above everything else in BBSBL. Maybe even above everything else in his life. That's how passionate Play is and it shows much he really wants BBSBL to succeed at all costs. To make a long story short, BBSBL wouldn't be where it's at right now if not for everything Play has done. He may slack off with the banks once in a while, but he gets the job done successfully and that's what really matters.
For all the success and emotions Play has shown, I pretty much had to match him up with the one and only Tupac. Tupac was one of the greatest rappers to ever exist and few if any can compare to the legacy he left after his unfortunate death in 1996. When he was alive, Tupac put out hit album after album from 2Pacalypse in 1991 to The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory in 1996. When people listened to Tupac's songs, they would hear raw emotion and a genuine desire to make life among the lower class better across the entire nation. There may not ever be a rapper as passionate as Tupac for all eternity. He wrote so many lyrics to so many songs that seven different albums ended up being released after his death. And that was after six album during his life. That's how much work Tupac put in the studio. It's unfortunate that his misunderstanding regarding his 1994 shooting ended up starting the East Coast vs West Coast war, but regardless, Tupac has had a greater impact on hip-hop than just about anyone else.
While Tupac of course was a rebel, Play is more of a disciplinarian and enforcer here. But despite all that, Play and Tupac have been among the most successful GM's and rappers respectively for a very long time.
Shale - Sheek Louch
In all honesty, I feel like I've accomplished a lot more here as a GM than I've been given credit for. My 2 division titles and 2 wild cards speak for themselves and arguably put me among the top 10-12 most successful GM's in BBSBL history. Yet certain people here keep going at me like I've done absolutely nothing by saying I'm one of if not the worst GM here, which is clearly not true for at least 5-10 different reasons that I shouldn't even need to list here. The trolling and nonsense is 1 thing, but when it's time to show respect and put together all-time top 10-15 lists for most postseason success among every GM that has ever been here, I'm clearly in the top 15, if not top 10 and there shouldn't be any disagreements on that at all. It's about time for the critics to finally give credit where credit is due!
It was only right for me to give a local 914 comparison, right? Nah...there's more to it than that. Sheek Louch has been part of The LOX and D-Block since the beginning and has put out 5 solo albums in his career. Yet, despite all the money and fame he has earned over the years, he still hangs out in the hood just like he always has. Not many rappers can say they've had major success and still spend time in the hood after all these years, but like his fellow D-Block comrades, Sheek is one of them.
As far as The LOX goes, Sheek has always been viewed as the "third" member of the group. Jadakiss has more or less been the front man of The LOX over the years and has had some mainstream popularity. Styles P has always been known for his vicious bars and for being one of, if not the most hardcore rapper alive. And then there's Sheek, who has hardcore bars of his own, but has never achieved the same kind of fame and gotten enough recognition as he should have.
Sheek certainly deserves to be recognized more for his contributions to The LOX and rap itself, and on that same token, I genuinely feel like I deserve more respect and credit in BBSBL than I have been given, even though I brought over half the trolling upon myself. Just even seeing someone say that I'm one of the worst GM's here pisses me off because if everyone were to go on CATO and look at league history, they'd recognize my success and not say that kind of nonsense. But if people here are just going to full of shit with their assessments of me, then I might as well think that in all honesty, the entire league considers me among one of the top 10-15 successful GM's here without a doubt, because that's the truth.
Spencer - Jay-Z
Spencer and Jay-Z are both vets that have been around BBSBL and rap respectively and have achieved a significant amount of success at what they do.
Spencer was the first GM in BBSBL history to win 3 championships and did so in a span of 4 seasons. He is still one of the greatest GM's we have ever seen and for the most part has put out one elite team after another.
Jay-Z emerged as one of the best rappers around in 1996 and hasn't looked back since. His first 5 albums are widely considered as classics in rap, and the two albums he did after that were great as well before he announced what turned out to be a brief retirement. A few years later, Jay-Z returned and has put out a few more albums. However, these albums have clearly been more mainstream generally speaking and it seems as if those albums were more about making money than necessarily putting out more amazing rap albums.
Jay-Z in fact stated that he didn't care about his new music in D.O.A. (Death of Autotune") when he said that if people want his old music, they should buy his old albums. Likewise, Spencer hasn't made the smartest trade decisions in particular in recent time, but he has still had quite a bit of success. So, more than likely, if people are giving Spencer shit for the recent moves he has made, he probably doesn't care what they have to say because through all this time, he has 3 championships and they don't. So it's like what the fuck do the rest of us even know? Apparently, not as much him.
Again, Spencer and Jay-Z are both veterans in their crafts that have had significant success and don't care about what anyone else has to say because the way they look at it, others aren't even that qualified to give criticism if they haven't achieved similar success.
Stevie B - Lil Wayne
Stevie B has had a good amount of success here. Yet, for a long time, he has acted as if he is one of the top 3-5 greatest BBSBL GM's of all time, which I'm sure quite a few people would consider to be a stretch. But in 14 seasons so far, Stevie B has 1 division title, 4 wild card appearances and one unsuccessful trip to the World Series to show for. That of course is a lot more than the majority of GM's here can say, but there indeed are a few others with more accomplished BBSBL resumes than him.
As for Lil Wayne, he's been in rap since the late 90s as a member of the Hot Boyz with BG, Juvenile and Turk. Eventually, Weezy began what has become a very successful solo career that has included 10 solo albums and the Like Father Like Son album he did with his mentor, Birdman.
Eventually, Weezy would declare himself as the "best rapper alive", and while some of the mainstream rap fans would agree with him, the more old school veteran fans of hip-hop strongly disagreed, being that the vast majority of the all-time great rappers are still alive today. Similarly, Stevie B seems to believe he is a top 3-5 all-time BBSBL GM, but many, if not all other GM's would probably look at him as a top 10 GM at best. Close but no cigar is a good way to put it. Both Stevie B and Weezy could use reality checks for sure.
StutterBomb - Method Man
What do Stutter and Method Man share in common? Both are tall (Stutter is 6'2 and Mef is 6'4). Both are left-handed. Both have short hair and big beards. Both are fathers. Both smoke a ton of weed every day and both are at least somewhat forgetful at times.
Stutter hasn't had the greatest memory and has made mistakes in various aspects over time such as forgetting to protect Dan Uggla and Buddy Carlyle in the expansion draft and forgetting to do a critical PD reversal on Lonnie Chisenhall, among other things. Method Man on the other hand infamously forgot to pay his taxes from 2004-2007 and eventually got in big trouble for that. Apparently, weed really can make people forget about doing the most simple things in life. Stutter and Mef are both living proof.
Mef of course has had significantly more success in rap than Stutter has in BBSBL, but their other similarities are good enough for this as strictly a personality/lifestyle comparison.
