Following their eighth consecutive losing season, the Reds have accomplished very little both on the field and financially. Despite having a premier ace in Josh Beckett, the rest of team has failed to live up to expectations. And not only have the Reds been losing on the field, but their finances haven't improved at all in a long time.
At his press conference this afternoon, GM George Andrews stated, "Our organization has had a lot of trouble selling tickets and the performance of our players has certainly been one reason why. We lowered prices, but we didn't sell more tickets. Then, we raised prices to try to make a little profit in the end, but that hasn't worked either. It has gotten to the point where we wanted to know what the fans really want here in Riverfront Stadium. The Reds are currently a bottom five organization in both market size and fan loyalty and we ought to do something about it.
"I recently asked our media coordinator to put some polls for our fans on Facebook and Twitter to see exactly what our fans would want (besides a better team, which we are always trying to improve) that would get them to come to the ballpark more often. Seating expansions, changes in dimensions and fence heights, and lower food prices were among the poll options, but the overwhelming winner was a big stadium renovation to modernize the park more. This stadium has existed since 1970 and I feel it's about time we made it look newer and better after all these years! And if that's what our fans want, then that is exactly what they will get!"
Andrews then mentioned that a level 2 renovation will occur this upcoming off season. It will include a concourse, night club, usb plugs at ever seat, amenity expansion, and luxury boxes throughout the stadium.
According to the Reds' senior financial consultant, the total cost for this major renovation will be $80,000,000, which will be thoroughly paid up front from the Reds' stadium bank account. It would leave the Reds with $10,000,000 remaining in the stadium bank account, which could potentially be put to use in the future if the Reds decide to change the dimensions again.
"We sincerely hope that this renovation will rejuvenate our fan base and get them more excited for Reds baseball in 2008! We've got a young team, a star in Josh Beckett and a few more promising players that have a lot of potential. If all goes well, I have no doubt that this team can have their first winning record since 1999," Andrews said in his closing remarks.
The Reds are desperate to get out of the financial funk they've been in for years, so it will be interesting to see how much more ticket sales and overall revenue they will make going forward. Maybe that first winning record since 1999 will happen as well! Only time will tell.
