2007 Mock Draft
Matt Harvey is the best rated player we have ever seen in any BBSBL draft.
Now that the 2006 postseason has concluded (and congrats to the A's for winning another championship), we can look ahead to the much anticipated 2007 draft. This draft has quite a few amazing pitchers and some great hitters as well. Now that a real order can be determined, let's see how the draft will most likely play out.
Note: Due to various tanking penalties, in this mock draft, the Red Sox and Twins' picks will both be dropped seven spots each. Apparently, the Phillies will get a pass because CC has only been here for one season.
Here we go!
1. San Diego Padres - SP Matt Harvey
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3048.html
Habes has already made it clear that he will not only draft Harvey first, but eventually franchise him as well. You can't really second guess him doing so. With all brilliant talents, Harvey could be something special. He could have Kerry Wood potential and some. He also starts as loyal, and has 9 velocity and B duration. There really isn't anything you can't like about him. He is the Real Deal and Habes will be fortunate to have him for a very long time.
This is definitely karma for what happened in 2000 that resulted in me being able to draft David Wright.
2. Chicago White Sox - SP David Price
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3098.html
David Price is B/G/B, is already a 3 in runs and has A duration. As good as Bumgarner is as well, I see Crazy Mike going with Price between the two. Price could be a future ace for the White Sox and follow in the footsteps of Alex Fernandez as a great pitcher the White Sox could build around.
3. Philadelphia Phillies - SP Madison Bumgarner
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2928.html
After getting Clayton Kershaw with the first overall pick in the 1006 draft, CC could add another southpaw to what could turn into a dominant rotation by the end of the decade. Bumgarner is only 17 and could be perfect for a team like the Phillies that need more time before really competing. Bumgarner has brilliant talents in hits and walks, B duration, and 8 velocity. His minimal loyalty may not look as enticing, but if the Phillies become a good team by the time Bumgarner is major league ready, they shouldn't have as much trouble with keeping him around.
The Phillies' future could be bright. CC just needs to hope his spects pan out.
4. Arizona Diamondbacks - SP Jordan Zimmermann
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3107.html
Darell has a lot of hitters for the future, but not as much pitching. Thus, Jordan Zimmermann looks like a good fit for the D-Backs. Zimmermann should have great control and has the potential to be a good #2-3 starter in the future.
5. Anaheim Angels - RF Giancarlo Stanton
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3366.html
Finally a hitter gets drafted! The Angels have Dayton Bueller as a future power bat, but should be able to add another slugger in Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton has light-tower power and will definitely need a TIA in hits to become a beast. I'm sure Greg would be more than willing to give him that. The Angels' have a very good system as is and Stanton would improve it even more.
6. Los Angeles Dodgers - 1B Freddie Freeman
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2579.html
The Dodgers desperately need more hitters in their minor league system, so Dale at this point will probably select Freddie Freeman. Freeman should already start off as a solid overall hitter and with a TIA in homers, could become a hitter he can build the Dodgers' lineup around.
7. Atlanta Braves - SP Julio Teheran
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p1147.html
Temp of course is away due to military duties and his picks will get auto'd. Teheran is only 15 and while this may sound nice to some people, keep in mind how badly Felix Hernandez shit the bed for Steve. Anyway, Teheran could have solid potential, especially with a TIA to home runs allowed. He is the best rated player left, so it would only make sense for the Braves to get him with the auto pick.
8. Milwaukee Brewers - SP Matt Moore
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3462.html
Matt Moore may only start out with fair in walks, but with a TIA to average, plus having brilliant in hits and good in home runs, Moore could turn into a very good pitcher for the Brewers. Knowing Steve, he likes to take a gamble on certain players and I could see him doing that with Moore.
9. Texas Rangers - SP Andrew Cashner
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3386.html
Dan needs more pitching depth in his system and Andrew Cashner would be a solid addition for him. With good talents across the board, Cashner could turn into a good middle rotation starter down the road. Cashner is also loyal, which makes him that much more appealing.
10. Chicago Cubs (via Houston Astros via Montreal Expos) - LF Starling Marte
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2369.html
Play loves hitters that steal bases, so Starling Marte is someone he could certainly select if still available. Marte could become a great hitter and certainly could steal 60+ bases per season. A TIA to home runs could turn Marte into a consistent 30/30 threat for the future. Again, if Marte is still available, I can't see Play passing on him.
11. Arizona Diamondbacks (via Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - SP Jarrod Parker
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3455.html
Darell could add to his future pitching depth by selecting Jarrod Parker with the Devil Rays' pick. Parker has good potential, good talents in everything except strikeouts, and could eventually reach A duration with some help during a spring training. He would be a solid choice and if it happens, the D-Backs' future pitching staff could become very talented.
12. Boston Red Sox (via Cincinnati Reds) - RF Jason Heyward
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2390.html
The Red Sox lack power in their minor league system. Break could use this pick to improve upon that by drafting Jason Heyward. Heyward will need a TIA in hits to become even better and I can only imagine Break would do that. Heyward would be a good fit in Fenway Park, especially with the Pesky Pole likely adding a few more home runs to his future stats.
13. Boston Red Sox - MR Sean Doolittle
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3349.html
Break could then use his own pick to add bullpen depth by selecting Sean Doolittle. A future bullpen tandem of Doolittle and Jonny Venters could be amazing. Being that Break drafted Venters in the past due to his great talents despite being a reliever, I could definitely see him taking Doolittle if he is still available.
14. Minnesota Twins - CL Greg Holland
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3347.html
Like Doolittle, Greg Holland could be a beast future closer as well. Thus, it wouldn't be too surprising if Styro took him here. The Twins' minor league hitting and starting pitching depth are both already loaded, so Styro might as well address the bullpen now. With 10 velocity, Holland should be able to throw gas and get outs. He will probably get TIA'd in walks as well.
15. Toronto Blue Jays (via NYY) - CL Steve Cishek
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3368.html
Yup. 3 relievers in a row now. Steve Cishek is the best pitcher left and I'm sure Game will take him as a result. With his sidearm motion, Cishek could eventually be their heir successor to Danny Graves' current role as the Jays' closer. This is something Game would have to address at some point, and by drafting Cishek, it would be one less thing for him to worry about.
16. Boston Red Sox (via San Francisco Giants) - 3B Josh Donaldson
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3408.html
Break could get another potential future power hitter by drafting Josh Donaldson with the Giants' pick. Donaldson could become the Red Sox' future third baseman and be a good middle of the order hitter. He will more than likely get a TIA in hits.
17. Kansas City Royals - SP Josh Collmenter
The GM-less Royals will obviously have their picks auto'd and Josh Collmenter would be one of the best players available. Collmenter could turn into either a starter or reliever in the future, but until the Royals get a new GM, Collmenter will probably be a starter for now. The bearded pitcher will eventually need a TIA in home runs to be more effective, but could turn into good added depth for the Royals later on.
18. Montreal Expos(via Cleveland Indians via Pittsburgh Pirates) - MR Tommy Layne
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2305.html
Kobe really seems intent on rebuilding the Expos. A good start to Kobe's rebuild would be to take Tommy Layne, who has very good potential to be a future setup man or closer. Layne is also loyal, which is nice.
19. New York Mets - 3B Will Middlebrooks
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3420.html
First off, it wouldn't be surprising at all if Break's real life hard-on for Will Middlebrooks results in him being drafted to the Red Sox. But assuming that does not happen, Middlebrooks would be a solid choice here for James. With Aaron Boone not getting any younger, Middlebrooks could be a good successor at third base for the Mets. Yes he is poor in walks, but he could still be a very good hitter with a TIA in hits. His speed on the bases isn't too bad either. There are other options for James, but I see him taking Middlebrooks.
20. Boston Red Sox (via St. Louis Cardinals) - SP John Gast
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3362.html
With his fourth and final pick of the first round (again, assuming Middlebrooks is drafted by the Mets), Break will probably end up drafting John Gast here. Gast has pretty good potential and a TIA to walks would make him even better. Break doesn't have many southpaw starters in his system, so it would be good to add one at some point.
21. Baltimore Orioles - MR Esmailin Caridad
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3443.html
Jah doesn't have much minor league pitching depth, although to his credit, his major league rotation is quite young. Nonetheless, Esmailin Caridad looks like a solid reliever that could one day be a setup man to Ernest Czech. Not sure if Caridad will end up falling this low, but if he does, I definitely see Jah making sure he doesn't fall any lower.
22. Cincinnati Reds (via Montreal Expos via Boston Red Sox via Pittsburgh Pirates) - SS Jean Segura
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3141.html
Stutter needs hitting depth badly in his minor league system. There probably won't be many great options left among hitters, so I like Jean Segura here. Stutter has been seeking middle infield help for quite some time and that is certainly an area of need for him. Thus, Segura could be a good pick here and could give the Reds a solid leadoff hitter with a ton of speed.
23. Detroit Tigers - MR Tony Watson
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3159.html
Like his buddy Jah, Dave needs more pitching in his farm system, so I see him making a similar choice with Tony Watson to bolster his bullpen for the future. Watson has nice ratings overall. With all the injuries the Tigers have suffered, including the CEI to closer Scott Strickland, bullpen depth is something Dave absolutely has to address, both for now and the future.
24. Pittsburgh Pirates - SP Ross Detwiler
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3436.html
With his own pick, Stevie B could select Ross Detwiler to be part of the future for the Pirates. With a TIA to his hits, Detwiler could turn out as good as some of the other starters taken before him. For a late 1st round pick, Detwiler is pretty nice.
25. Anaheim Angels (via Colorado Rockies via San Francisco Giants) - MR Nate Jones
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3394.html
Nate Jones could be a nice bullpen piece for Greg to have for the future. Jones' ratings are nice and will be even better if his walks get TIA'd. He definitely has the potential to be a future closer.
26. Anaheim Angels (via Toronto Blue Jays via San Francisco Giants via Pittsburgh Pirates) - SP Corey Kluber
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2356.html
There aren't many good hitters left and the remaining starting pitching depth will have thinned out by now, so Corey Kluber could be a good pick here for Greg. Kluber will need a TIA in hits or home runs to go along with a brilliant rating in walks. He doesn't look like the greatest 4 star pitcher, but could be good depth nonetheless.
27. Chicago Cubs (via Seattle Mariners) - SP Charlie Furbush
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2551.html
With the next three picks all his, Play will have a few choices to make by now. I could definitely see one of them being Charlie Furbush. The southpaw will need a TIA in home runs or walks eventually, but could be good pitching depth for now.
28. Chicago Cubs (via Florida Marlins) - MR Mark Rzepczynski
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2815.html
I could also see Play taking Mark Rzepczynski with one of his picks. Rzepczynski could turn into a nice addition to the Cubs' future bullpen and should be an effective left-handed specialist.
29. Chicago Cubs - RF Rymer Liriano
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p2847.html
With his own pick, Play could then go back to hitters and take speedster outfielder Rymer Liriano. Liriano is just 15 years old and has all average talents, but with a TIA in hits to go along with the A/A running/stealing combo, Liriano could become a future leadoff or #2 hitter for the Cubs. With how much Play values speed, I can't see him overlooking Liriano if he's still available this late in the 1st round.
30. Oakland A's - MR Drake Britton
bbs56.net/BBSBL3/BBSBL3/Site/p3409.html
To end the 1st round, defending champion Broph could improve his future bullpen depth by selecting Drake Britton. Britton could certainly use a TIA in hits and could be a very good setup man or even a closer down the road. Broph's major league bullpen isn't getting younger, so this looks like an area he should target in this draft.
Happy drafting everyone!
