Another pitching driven team with Cy Young winner Kerry Wood and Santana combining for 54 wins while having eras under 2. JC Romero had the year of his life saving 45 games with a 1.78 era and winning the Rolaids award. The Cubs had a nice blend of speed and power, leading the NL in steals and coming in second in hrs. MVP Manny Ramirez knocked 52 balls out of the park accounting for a third of the Cubs total. His 52 hrs were 16 ahead of 2nd place. The pitching staff went 5 deep with Mike Grace making the all star team along with Irabu and Nagy/Fernandez/Rogers all having solid seasons. Ricky Bottalico won the rolaids award with 45 saves and a 2.15 era. The hitting was solid but not spectacular. Gary Sheffield had great stats in 200 abs. He had 15 hrs and a .312 average. The only other hitting standout was Reggie Sanders who had 34 hrs.

The 2002 White Sox had the 3rd most regular season wins of most time. Alex Fernandez won his 2nd of three straight Cy Young awards and Chad Bradford won the Rolaids award with 42 saves. Fernandez anchored a 3 man rotation consisting of Fernandez/Cormier/Reuter. The 3 combined for 76 wins coming in 1-2-3 in the AL in wins and they all had eras under 3. The White Sox team era was only 2.81. The White Sox were not just about pitching though. They has 8 (!!) players with at least 15 hrs led by Castilla’s 30 hrs. Ray Durham hit .309 and stole 59 bases.

highest paid player: Ichiro Suzuki - $ 13,000,000
Play’s 3rd and final team in the top 20. At least he made it to the WS this time before choking. Only one all star pitcher this time in Kerry Wood who won 21 games to go with a 2.27 era although Paul Wilson and Johan Santana were probably close. Bob Howry closed out 38 games winning the rolaids award. The Cubs didn’t have a ton of power but did lead the NL with a .287 avg. JD Drew had a monster season with 32 hrs and 127 rbis to go along with a .346 avg. Ichiro hit .333 with 78 sbs although he did lead the league in caught steals with 30. In the weird stat department – the Cubs were 2nd in era but 7th in earned runs allowed. Not sure how that is even possible.

highest paid player: Eric Karros - $ 12,000,000
Ok Break, you are in the top 10. Are you happy now? Yet another team on this list with the rolaids relief man. Mike Timlin took the award with 39 saves, 6 wins and a 2.92 era. The Sox used a 3 man rotation led by Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez and all star Buddy Groom. Those 2 combined for exactly half of the Red Sox win total with 54 wins. In addition they both had an era under 2.5. Clemens at the age of 36 was just a shell of his former self but the Sox still led the league in era. The hitting was led by 2 superstars; Manny Ramirez with 32 hrs, 126 rbis and a .298 avg and Nomar Garciaparra with 25 hrs, 133 rbis and a .339 avg. If the Sox didn’t choke in game 7 then they probably would have been higher.

highest paid player: Roger Clemens - $ 9,300,000
Now we get to the top 5. Break, you have your second top 10 team with a whopping 7 all stars. If you didn’t choke in the playoffs this team could have ended up #1 overall. This was Pedro’s first of 3 straight Cy Young awards. Oddly enough he didn’t make the all star team. He started off the year in Det and had an average 5-4 record and then after the trade he went 14-3 in Boston with a 1.69 era. Groom was an all star with a 24-6 record and a 2.63 era and Clemens still had solid stats with a 19-9 record and a 3.66 era. The Sox led the league in stls with 5 guys with 40+ stls as well as leading the league in avg. Manny and Nomar were the hitting stars of this team as well. Manny had 39 hrs and 131 rbis to go with a .306 avg and a .422 ob% which was good enough for second in the league. Nomar hit .345 with 24 hrs and 119 rbis. Knoblauch led the league with 74 stls.

Won Division Series 3-0 over San Francisco Giants
Team All-Stars: Eric Chavez, Orlando Hudson, Randy Johnson, Cc Sabathia, John Smiley
highest paid player: Jeff Kent - $ 20,000,000
117 wins was tied for the most wins ever. Not that it is surprising considering they had 4 20 game winners led by Randy Johnson’s 30 wins. CC Sabathia at the tender age of 19 had 21 wins to go along with a 3.57 era. The Marlins offense was led by ofs Larry Walker and Bobby Higginson who combined for 52 hrs and 263 rbis while both hitting over .300. Walker also swiped 66 bases. Of course that was only good for third on the team because ROTY Eric Chavez swiped 87 and Juan Pierre swiped 89 to come in 1-2 in the NL.

Team All-Stars: Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Mike Stanley
highest paid player: Takashi Saito- $ 20,000,000
Tied with the 2000 Marlins as the winningest regular season team of all time. A great all around team. Saito was very good on the white sox before being traded to the Yankees winning 12 games with a 2.11 era but after being traded to the Yankees he was unbeatable going 11-0 with a 1.96 era. The Yankees had plenty of solid pitching with Reuter/Petite/Portugal/Hutton to go along with saito. Reuter seems to show up on a bunch of these teams. Mariano Rivera probably would have won the Rolaids award if there was one. He had a league leading 46 saves and a 1.11 era. The Yankees had 7 players with 15 or more hrs led by Bernie Williams’ 36. Jeter hit .369, leading the AL, and was right behind Mcgwire for the ob% lead.

highest paid player: Will Cunnane - $ 20,000,000
Styro’s team? Kobe’s team? Who knows but they are one of only 2 teams to win 110 games and win the WS. Another team with great all around talent. The pitching was great led by 28 game winner Mike Lincoln. They traded for Will Cunnane down the stretch and it paid off as he went 10-2 with a 2.88 era for Montreal. Wells/Zambrano/Zito were also solid. Rivera was not as dominating as in the past but he still saved 38 games. The Expos more than held their own in the hitting department as well. MVP Jayson Werth came over about 1/5 of the way in and hit 22 hrs in 460 abs to go with a .311 avg. Ortiz also came over about halfway through the season and clubbed 19 hrs in under 400 abs to go with a .355 abg. Add to that Andrew Jones, Robert Fick, Brian Giles and Corey Patterson and you have a great offensive team. After just getting by the Mets in round 1 they went 8-1 while running through rounds 2 and 3.

I gave Broph’s team the edge over Stobe’s (Kotyro’s??) team because they had an easier run in the postseason. This version of the bash brothers starred MVP Juan Gonzalez and Jason Giambi who both ended up top 5 in hrs. Juan hit 38 hrs and 119 rbis to go with a .338 avg and Jason chipped in 36 hrs and 110 rbis. Jeter led the league in avg and ob%. The pitching was led by two twenty game winners, Pavano and Van Poppel. Broph also had a bunch of solid middle relievers led by Mike Macdougal. He also has Robb Nen who won the rolaids award with 44 saves and a 2.29 era.
