Top 10 General managers in BBSBL. Not including myself.
1. Play - Chicago Cubs
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 113 49 .698 1
2002 107 55 .660 1
2001 100 62 .617 1
2000 110 52 .679 1
1999 102 60 .630 2
1998 72 90 .444 4
1997 61 101 .377 4
1996 43 119 .265 5
Summary -
Stacks talent. Is so good at acquiring top talent and selling them when he needs to. Always seems to be acquiring young studs. Can manage the payroll as well. Tanked to start but has been retooling on the run for years now. Only missing that trophy but it will happen soon enough. His starting pitching has been elite for awhile now, and that is the key. Recently did another huge rebuild but he still wins. Has 10+ 1sts coming up. Amazing amount of talent. Can pretty much get whoever he wants at any time.
2. Ashes - Florida Marlins
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 88 74 .543 4
2002 94 68 .580 3
2001 100 62 .617 2
2000 117 45 .722 1
1999 59 103 .364 4
1998 76 86 .469 3
1997 95 67 .586 1
1996 83 79 .512 3
Summary -
Hes in great shape after this recent rebuild and he would be in even better shape had he not had to leave for a month or so. Very good GM that wins trades. Focuses on market value and acquiring players that are rare. Sells high. Buys low. Very good overall GM. Also tends to only go big. If he doesn't seem to think hes a World Series contender he sells. Doesn't want to be stuck in the middle. He currently has so much upper echelon talent there is no way he wont be a 100 win team for the next couple years.
3. Broph - Oakland Athletics
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 65 97 .401 3
2002 77 85 .475 1
2001 103 59 .636 1
2000 110 52 .679 1
1999 107 55 .660 1
1998 87 75 .537 2
1997 56 106 .346 3
1996 67 95 .414 4
Summary -
He can manage a team very well. All about value. Judging the market. Making good trades. Saving cash. Does an excellent job. Also wins. Can put together teams that have top tier talent an can win big. Probably like 2 or 3 games from having more titles then me. Pretty rare success rate. Id like to see him maintain a winning team for longer, but that is nit picking and personal preference. Cant wait to see him battle it out with Nanz in the AL West. Should b a great rivalry over the next couple yeas.
4. Nanz - Seattle Mariners
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 107 55 .660 1
2002 74 90 .451 2
2001 52 110 .321 4
2000 56 106 .346 4
1999 85 77 .525 3
1998 89 73 .549 1
1997 88 74 .543 1
1996 94 68 .580 1
Summary -
Nanz is the king of rebuilding. He did this in BBS too. He doesn't rush it. He takes it slow. he just loads up on young talent. Then he deals for vets when needed. He buys low and sells high. He also always keeps enough top tier talent that when he starts his rebuild he can unload guys at premium prices. Everyone should watch and learn how Nanz rebuilds. its perfect. His team is amazing. So much talent. So much youth. Very balanced. best team in the AL this season, next season and beyond.
5. Erbes - New York Yankees
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 104 58 .642 1
2002 109 53 .673 1
2001 108 54 .667 1
2000 81 81 .500 3
1999 87 75 .537 3
1998 102 60 .630 2
1997 117 45 .722 1
1996 99 63 .611 2
Summary -
Obviously Erbes has a small advantage because hes the simmer but he has done an admirable job of rebuilding when it seemed like his team was "too" good. He also has never truly tanked as his worst record is .500. Once again he has turned his team into an elite squad although hes having a down year this year. But when he does rebuild he does it quick and well. Turning his team into a elite level team. World Series type club. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to having to deal of some salary and having a under-performing offense. Big off-season for him.
6. Steve1213 - Pittsburgh Pirates
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 97 65 .599 2
2002 74 88 .457 4
2001 60 102 .370 4
2000 59 103 .364 5
1999 70 92 .432 5
1998 83 79 .512 2
1997 88 74 .543 2
1996 79 83 .488 3
Summary -
Steve is a great GM. Another GM that has done a great job with a shit market. He did a great rebuild and stacked young talent. Then he saved money and hit FA hard. made the riht deals and got himself a hell of a team. Now hes kinda skirting the line of moving older expensive players to kinda re tool. Itll be tough for him to do that with his market and revenue. Replacing older bats like Jim Thome an Gary Sheffield are never easy, but paying these guys over 10 million each isn't a goo idea either. Another GM Id love to see in a bigger market. Even so one of the elite General managers around.
7. Styro - Minnesota Twins
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 95 67 .586 1
2002 99 64 .607 2
2001 103 59 .636 1
2000 98 64 .605 3
1999 84 78 .519 3
1998 70 92 .432 4
1997 78 84 .481 4
1996 80 82 .494 4
Summary -
Another Gm that does a great job of acquiring young talent. He can stockpile prospects. He did a great job in Montreal. He likes to flip older players for multiple youngsters. He should fit well in another small market here in Minnesota. Id say hes only negative is overvaluing youth and not making upgrade trades when his team is good. He tens to sit on youth. In Minnesota hell have no choice but to rotate youth in and out because he wont have the market or revenue to compete with the high rollers. A top General manager that Id love to see in a big market.
8. Waldo - Chicago Whie Sox
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 101 61 .623 1
2002 116 46 .716 1
2001 106 56 .654 1
2000 96 66 .593 1
1999 94 68 .580 1
1998 98 64 .605 1
1997 80 82 .494 4
1996 72 90 .444 4
Summary -
Waldo has done a great job. He out together an elite team and has ridden it for a couple years now. He has multiple elite players that are slowly declining. But in their prime his team was a title contender year after year. His lack of activity the last couple months has slowed his team down. He mightve given up a little to much in deals to maintain his winning. He doesnt really spend much time on the boards and because of this his Board cash is low. If he were more active his team would be even better. Itll be interesting to see if he can sustain the winning or if hell need to blow it up. How he handles a rebuild will move him up or down any future list.
9. JAH - Baltimore Orioles
Record -
Year Wins Losses PCT Pos
2003 87 75 .537 3
2002 90 72 .556 2
2001 94 68 .580 3
2000 94 68 .580 2
1999 92 70 .568 2
1998 94 70 .573 3
1997 100 62 .617 3
1996 92 70 .568 3
Summary -
JAH has done a great job of competing. He has retooled consistently to always compete. There is something to be said for not tanking. Tanking is the easiest way to gain top tier talent. To not go that direction makes things more difficult. Some may say that competing while not winning a title is kinda counter productive. That maybe you should rebuild if you don't have the top tier talent to win a title. But Id rather have a team win 90 consistently then yo yo between 100 win seasons and 50 win seasons. On the other hand, if JAH had more playoff success he would be much higher on this list.
10. Break - Boston Red Sox
Record -

1998 112 50 .691 1
1997 103 59 .636 2
1996 102 60 .630 1
Summary -
I based this list off of many characteristics. Winning, trading, activity. IMO Break deserves to be on this list because of his winning history in Boston and his ability to be one of the more active General Managers. I also believe hes on the downside of his tenure here and may be off this list within a year or two. He has a very odd valuing system and plays the game with too much value on real life players, but he has had rare success here and that needs to be recognized. I also feel like hes mostly unpopular because of his uneven responses to league issues and his propensity to defend guys he knows just because he knows them. Sometimes you need to take your friends to task if they are wrong. Break cant seem to do that consistently.
