With this article, I factor in production, talent ratings, contract, and age for the true outcome of their value…I weigh talent ratings along with age more, and this could be a good guide to see who truly the best valuable Catcher on the market is. Here we go:
Top 10 MLB Catchers
1. Buster Posey- CHI- Age 28- Ever since leaving shitty San Fran, he has thrived under Play’s leadership. He is the complete package defensively, and he’ll hit you a ton of doubles with a few dingers added as well. Posey has a couple reversals left, and has been camped fully for the most part…in saying that, he’s the complete catcher, and I’d love to have him on my team. Contract isn’t the best, but he’s worth every dime. Another Chicago player at the top of my rankings.
2. Travis d’Arnaud- MIN- Age 27- This guy and Hunter Morris are pretty dang comparable. A matter of preference, I suppose. Anyway, let’s talk about d’Arnuad. He’s got some real power as evident by his 75+ extra base hit season last year. His HR talent is developed nicely, and has a number rating of 11 which is easily the highest for catchers. He has all of his reversals left, and can be IRId four more times. I really like this player, and he’s got the ability to play good defense at the catcher spot. I’m a fan, and so should Styro.
3. Hunter Morris- FLA- Age 27- This guy is just a run producing machine. Look at his first three seasons. No rookie wall or nothing. He is hitting about 43 doubles, 22 HRs, and 94 RBIs. This is the Marlins 6th hole hitter which tells you why they usually produce the top offenses year in and year out. He’s got 5 reversals left, and can still be IRId a few more times which is nice. This is one of my favorite and underrated players in this league.
4. Hugh Dillinger- LAD- Age 24- This guy is going to be really good, and if he can luck into a PD to his HR talent…it will make him even scarier. He’ll be a gap hitting machine with the ability to get on base at a high clip. Not to mention, he’ll be a stud defender behind the dish, too. He’s untouched, and Dale has to love this young buck. Could there be a case for Hugh Dillinger at the top? Quite possibly.
5. Peter O’Brien- MON- Age 25- He is young, and has really great potential to turn out to be a great power hitter. Brilliant in doubles and home runs, and Kobe has the ability to maximize him with IRIs when the time comes. I’m a fan, and I think his defense will do just fine. His weakness…could hurt him. Plate discipline will be a huge issue for him unless he gets some luck along the way. Not my type of player, but I think his value is proper here. Interesting player for sure.
6. Matt Wieters- DET- Age 29- This guy possesses a ton of power as he has hit 70+ extra base hits the past two seasons now. His ability to hit for power is pretty damn special out of the catcher position. Not to mention his standout defense as he has won a pair of gold gloves to prove his ability in the field. He’s got 3 reversals left, and is on a fair contract. Dave has a really nice player, but I think it’s one he needs to part ways with right now to fully maximize his value at this current time.
7. Chance Sisco- ATL- Age 21- He’s very developed for only being 21 years old. He hasn’t been touched as far as I can see so you can possibly TIA his HRs or BBs which would help make him a better overall player. All reversals left which is always nice, and has the ability to be IRId to maximize his abilities. I think his biggest weakness his throwing arm which needs to be TIBd so you can’ run on Atlanta all day long. This is very nice player for HF!
8. Carlos Santana- STL- Age 29- I’ve inquired about this player for awhile now, but for some reason BoSoxi wants to keep him around. I like Carlos because he’s got great gap power, and he has a keen eye to go with it. The big negative is that he really shouldn’t be playing catcher because his defense is just not good enough. Still, even with all of that said, I’d have no problems with him being on my team as his bat will translate anywhere. Another positive is that he has all of his reversals, but however he has been IRId a whopping four times. BoSoxi, trade him to a winner!
9. Franklin Barbera- TEX- Age 25- I guess with Texas having no GM, I really didn’t know what type of talent was on the roster. I like this kid a lot, and in due time he will be a really productive catcher for this Rangers roster. Besides his TIA being used, he hasn’t been camped which means a full array of his IRIs can be used as well as all of his reversals, too. Well, rounded player for the new GM!
10. Jesus Montero- NYY- Age 26- He’s a guy that nobody really talks about, but man has he put together good back-to-back seasons. I would’ve, and was about to put him at 5th…then realized that he has no reversals left which is pretty damaging to his player value. In saying that, I really like his ability to hit for power, and play defense as well. All in all, he’s legit one bad PD away from really having minimal value so I think this is a fair spot to put him in the rankings.
Honorable Mentions: C Gary Sanchez (TOR:Age 23), C Jarrod Saltalamacchia (TAM: Age 31), C Cedric Mira (COL: Age 28), C Joe Mauer (OAK: Age 32), Dayton Buller (SD: Age 32)
Top 3 MLB Catcher Prospects
1. Lewin Diaz- NYM- Age 19- I’m a big fan of Lewin Diaz, and he has only been reversed once. He’s really developed in some areas and in others not as much. I’m not entirely sure if his future is at catcher, but I believe that’s where he’ll play if he stays with Dan.
2. Adam Duran- CLE- Age 21- He was the ninth pick in last year’s draft, and I really like this kid a lot. He has all of camps remaining besides his reversals…he was reversed just once by Sha…I mean D-Rowe. He can be TIAd, and I’m interested to see if that’s used or not. Love his defensive ability, and he has a plus-plus arm.
3. Edward Vickers- TOR- Age 18- The number three overall pick in this past draft looks like he’ll be a special piece to the puzzle for the Toronto Blue Jays. He obviously has all of his camps remaining, and he’s pretty developed for his age.
Bash away, folks!
