Time for another edition of Historical Rankings! It's been 5 seasons since the last version and boy has a lot changed! Teams that were tanking have now started to win; teams that were winning are now tanking; teams that were dominating are continuing to dominate. If you need a reminder, the scoring breakdown is below. Let's see where your team ranks!

28. Arizona Diamondbacks

Poor Darell. It's going to be tough for both the Diamondbacks and Rays to make any headway up these rankings as they're missing out on 6 seasons of regular season wins. That's why I did some projecting! If the Diamondbacks had those 6 seasons in their pocket they would shoot all the way up to... wait for it... last place! Okay so they wouldn't shoot up at all. Their projected 830 points would still land them in the doghouse. Good news though! Darell might notch his first playoff appearance this season and those are very valuable points. Give it 5 more seasons and I bet we see the Diamondbacks in the mid-20's - without projections.
27. Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Greeme has really turned the Rays around since their inception. He's by far had the most success of the two expansion teams and while he's hit a bit of speed bump this season he should add to those two playoff appearances in the near future. So I did the projections for the D'backs, how about the Rays? With a projected point total of 1,044 the Rays would shoot all the way up to 17th! Just goes to show you how valuable making the playoffs can be.
26. Minnesota Twins

It sucked when Styro left. He left an awesome team in Montreal that eventually went on to win a World Series. When he came back he took over a Twins team that looked to have some promise. Unfortunately, Minnesota is where prospects go to die. Because of this Styro hasn't been able to get a consistent product on the field or in his minors. All hopes rest with Matt Harvey. He could be to the Twins what Beckett is to the Reds - the only reason they win games.
25. Cincinnati Reds

Speaking of the Reds... Welcome to the division winner club, Stutter! Not counting the Rays, the Reds have the fewest overall regular season wins amongst playoff teams. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing really. The Reds rode Beckett and a mediocre offense all the way to October. It'll be interesting to see what the Reds do over the next 5 seasons to see if Stutter has learned from his success or if he'll be a one hit wonder?
24. San Diego Padres

The Padres have lost, loved, and lost again. Aarhabermill has put together some pretty nice teams (this year included), but has always run into the Giants. They did however win the division in 2005 and promptly lost in 3 games in the first round. Like I said love and lost. After that he promptly tore down his team, as is the Habercoaster way, and after tanking for favorite Matt Harvey promptly traded him to try and win. We'll see how this year shakes out, but it's going to be tough! Aar needs your prayers!
23. Los Angeles Dodgers

I hate throwing out the term treadmill team especially when I like the GM, but when the term fits, it fits. The Dodgers have never won a division, a wild card, or the admiration of the league under Dale. Partially the fault of a GM not going for it and partially the stud teams in his division, Dale has topped out at 80 wins only once. However, I think the tide is about to turn in the City of Angels. While the current roster has some older players, Dale finally has the young pieces to replace his aging vets. I could envision a wild card or two in the next 5 seasons.
22. Anaheim Angels

Greg officially hits his 5 season anniversary with these rankings and well the results are... ahem... underwhelming? Locked in a division where he has to play Seattle and Oakland more than any other team in the league, Greg certainly is in an unenviable position. It seems almost like Greg hasn't been able to pick a direction these past few years vacillating between trying to win and trying to tank - doing neither very well. Alas, here is another SoCal team that looks poised to make their 2nd playoff appearance (1st under Greg) this season, possibly taking down the mighty (and old) Mariners. A deep playoff run would definitely help shoot the Angels up the rankings.
21. Milwaukee Brewers

This was probably a bad year to update these rankings lol. The Dodgers, Angels, and Brewers could all make the playoffs and skyrocket up these standings. Steve was finally able to accumulate a ton of young pitching and more importantly avoided the PD bug to his studs. Let's not talk about Kyle Peterson. Now that we have talked up the present and the future of the Brew Crew let's talk about their horrible past. They've never won more than 85 games, never finished above 2nd in any division they've been in, and have never been to the playoffs. Steve always had his work cut out for him in Milwaukee, here's wishing him good luck in all his future endeavors!
20. Texas Rangers

Let's talk about the Bernie Madoff of BBSBL! Dan has been on probation so often I'm about to start calling him Lindsay Lohan. Boom, roasted! In all seriousness though Dan has been a solid GM, but has yet to taste any success - like most teams in the bottom half of these rankings. I give him credit for going for it each year, but the money stuff is borderline offensive at this point. If there was a point penalization for that kind of stuff I think Gers would be in last. It'll be interesting to see if Dan can strip some salary and still stay competitive in the next 5 seasons.
19. Detroit Tigers

The Tigers hold the very not-so-honorable distinction of being labelled a treadmill team most in the league. After seeing the records and this ranking it's hard to argue. That being said these past few years have been nice to Dave. He's won the division twice and finished 2nd last year, in a not-so-close race - he finished 34 games back. Dave did a good job of putting together a nice get-me-to-the-playoffs team, but with only 1 win in 2 trips it's tough to gauge just how good his two playoff teams really were. With aging vets and a bone dry trade market Dave is going to have to make some shrewd moves to avoid another 10 season playoff drought.
18. Philadelphia Phillies

I think it's pretty safe to say that the Phillies have undergone the most GM changes in the league. In fact, I think we've had 2-3 GMs just in the past month. Unfortunately, that's not the first ingredient for winning or long term success. Jordan looks like he could stick, though, so good news for fans in Philly. As one would expect, with great turnover comes great losing and the Phillies have perfected that recently. Jordan has a nice stable of young pitchers to look forward in the next couple of seasons, but I'd expect the Phillies to drop (heavily) in these standings before they rise.
17. New York Mets

The Mets have been the victim of some pretty horrible and inactive GMing over the past couple of seasons. Love James to pieces, but it was like I was in the movie Poltergeist and James was the 'geist. It was downright frightening. To replace him we hired back the biggest cheater and dirt bag I've come to know in sim leagues. Seemed like a good idea at the time! Dan might be a dirt bag, scum bag, douche bag, and other bag you can think of, but he was on the verge of turning the Blue Jays into a, to borrow a term from my friend, dynasty before everything shook out. Let's not forget the fleecing of Shale for Helton. As long as he stays clean I think the Mets can benefit from Dan's GMing skills over these next 5 seasons.
16. Colorado Rockies

At first I was like how are the Rockies this low!?! Did I do the math right? And then I was like oh yeah because they never make the playoffs. 4 wins in 3 trips. That's it. It's also kind of funny that Shale is the doormat for his 'friends' here in the league, always helping them out with exports, taking on bad contracts, trading them vets he doesn't need, and for what? We're 12 seasons in now and I have not seen one trade between break or drowe and Shale where Shale comes out the clear winner. I'm not trying to rail on Shale, this is more of a wake up call. Time to learn the game and stop being so nice if you want division titles and championships. But, alas, time to give credit where credit is due. Shale has taken the Rockies to the playoffs twice since these last rankings. Or should I say Spencer let Shale take the Rockies to the playoffs twice? Either way it happened. With almost no prospects, no picks, and a super under performing franchise player it'll be interesting to see when, if ever, the Rockies make the playoffs again.
15. Cleveland Indians

Ahhhh friendship! Only fitting that the Indians finish one spot above the Rockies. Drowe (/Shale) has actually been very good during these past 5 seasons. He's improved his win total each season topping out last year with 112. He also took his team to the World Series for the first and only time last year - and then promptly disappeared this season. Like serious, when was the last time he posted? Anyways, with his youth finally developed (he's dominating the AL Central again this year) the Indians look poised to win for quite some time.
14. St. Louis Cardinals

Man, when the Cardinals were being put together right around 2004-05 I thought, "Look out Play, you're about to get some heavy competition." And while bosoxi was able to coax a couple of 90 win seasons out over the past couple of season I think it's fair to label the Cardinals the biggest underachievers in the league. The Cards have the most regular season wins of all non-playoff teams, and have more wins than the Rays, Tigers, Phillies, Mets, Rockies, and Indians - all teams who have made the playoffs. Sure you could say they play in the toughest division, but I mean ever heard of a wild card? At some point you just have to dive in. These past couple of seasons would have been perfect to take the leap with the Cubs rebuilding. Hopefully bosoxi gets a bit more active and turns these birds around soon.
13. Pittsburgh Pirates

These past 5 season have been really good for the Pirates. Five straight 90 win seasons, with two 100+ wins seasons mixed in for good measure. The missing trophy on the mantle? A division title. Sure we can talk about how embarrassing it is to be that good and never win a division title. Or that the best team in the NL Central decided to rebuild and the Pirates still couldn't win the division. Or the fact that only 'championships' matter and yet this team (past five season) has never made it past the League Championship Series. Sure we could talk about all of that, but what's the point? All that matters is that the Pirates are on their way to a championship this year... right?
12. Baltimore Orioles

It really is terrifying how many GMs just sit around on their teams and do nothing with them. I'll give Jah credit: he's had one losing season in twelve. That's hard to do in this league, no doubt. On the flip side, he's only got 3 playoff appearances - two as wild cards. To win you actually have to make some moves. The last time Jah posted a trade block? Roosevelt was dropping bombs in the Pacific. I'm all for consistent winning, but at some point wins have to mean something. Get a move on Jah!
11. Chicago White Sox

These next 3-4 teams I'm considering the "Old Guard." These are all teams that won in the beginning of the league, but have fallen off some recently due to either GMing or rebuilding. Mike took over quite a mess from Waldo: tons of aging vets and zero to no prospects. After tearing it done a bit, trading for some young guys, making some savvy vet signings, the crazy has the White Sox semi-competing this year, but definitely poised to make some moves in the future. Built on the backs of guys like Price, Fielder, Gomez, and Roark, the White Sox could be venturing back into the playoffs sooner rather than later.
10. New York Yankees

Well, well, well. The Yankees. Probably the definition of the Old Guard. Won a ton in the beginning, retooled a bit, won some more, and now in the midst of a rebuild. The combination of me being horrible at this game and loving young players is probably going to prevent me from winning ever again. Oh well.
9. Toronto Blue Jays

Game started off these past 5 seasons pretty well winning back to back division championships. But it's now been two seasons since a trip to the playoffs and five seasons since that World Series Championship. Regardless of those blemishes Game has won 90+ games in six straight seasons, which is never something to scoff at. Trying to ignore this season's rough start, it seems like the Blue Jays have a nice couple of years ahead of them. They have some pieces they can move to fill holes and a lot of their vets are either under 30 or just about 30 aka the prime for most players. Game might need to catch a break with the Rays and Sox, but he definitely has the roster to keep competing.
8. Boston Red Sox

Ooohhhh just missed the 1300 club. Break has been bashed and then bashed some more and then bashed again, but even after 6 straight losing season he's still in the top 10. That's pretty impressive to me. Granted, outside of last year's trip to the postseason, all of his playoff appearances happened in the first 6 seasons of the league. Looking past that fact, break had the foresight to clear the salary required to go out and sign a bunch of dudes to get him back to the postseason, and while most of those guys aren't with his team anymore he still got back. Without any young players, spects, or picks I doubt this run lasts much longer, but he went for it and that takes guts.
7. Atlanta Braves

Welp just remember that these are historical rankings! Under Matt the Braves were the class of the NL making the playoffs 5 times in 7 years and winning two World Series'. When he left the Braves fell into a bit of disrepair, but with HF at the helm they look to have a bright future. I'm not sure we'll see a playoff team in the next five seasons, but we'll definitely see a winner. There's a glutton of studs in the Dirty South right now headlined by Trout, Stanton, Minor, and Smoak. Yeah they'll be okay.
6. Montreal Expos

This is going to be interesting. Do I take the viewpoint that Styro built Montreal to where it was during their heyday or do I say that Kobe did a good job of winning with what he got? I really don't want to start another bickering war about whose dick is bigger so I'm going to pass on that. What I will say is that the Expos have a couple of very nice spects that should help them win in the next five seasons. The problem is that they play in the same division as the Florida Marlins and well it's going to take more than a couple of nice prospects to dislodge that team. Kobe might need to bide his time until Ashes decides to tear it down. No shame in that. Winning in baseball is all about timing. Just ask the real life Rays.
5. Seattle Mariners

Nanz is a stud. So are his Mariners. 6 straight 100+ win seasons. 5 division titles in 6 seasons. He's been to two World Series' in the past five seasons and walked away a winner once. When Nanz decided to go for it around 2003 he went for it. Like Stamos going after some Greek yogurt. It was a blood bath. The problem? All of his guys are old and want so much money now, I don't even think Trump can help! So while the past five seasons have been great for Nanz I think he's about to get a wake up call. And it's going to be me - putting him on financial probation. Just remember the good times buddy!
4. Oakland Athletics

You'll notice that the Athletics have the fewest regular season wins among the top 6 teams on this list and 3rd fewest wins of our 8 champions. But who cares? All that really matters are championships and Broph has two. In this last five season cycle he put up three consecutive 100+ win seasons topped off with a division title and championship in 2006. Currently in the midst of a what looks to be a short rebuild, Broph has compiled quite a few stud pitchers (becoming more and more important in the league) which should help carry him through the next 5-10 years. Probably the biggest positive for the A's will be the collapse of the M's (sorry Nanz), the 'Gers consistently in financial probation and the Angels continually looking for a direction. It's always nice to know you can grab the division whenever you want it.
3. Florida Marlins

Time to separate the boys from the men. The Marlins have 41 playoff wins, 3 World Series appearances, and 2 championships. Let that sink in. Now take into account that Ashes has only won 100+ games in 4 seasons. That's what you call a big time performer. That being said it looks like Ashes is getting ready to feast on the NL East for quite some time and add to that 100+ win seasons total. With a team headlined by Miggy and CC this team looks ready to dominate for the next... forever? Not only does he have the most impressive major league roster in the league, but he's got a couple of 5* spects knocking on the door for reinforcements. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Marlins hop over this next team on the list over the next five seasons...
2. Chicago Cubs

Well first... 1,227 wins over 13 seasons. That's an average of 94 wins per season. That includes seasons of 43, 61, 72, and 67 wins. If that doesn't speak to the dominance Play has displayed over the past five, heck nine, seasons then damn you're cold. Unfortunately, and Play is going to hate talking about this, his playoff experience isn't exactly spectacular. Of the teams with three World Series appearances (A's, Marlins, Cubs, Giants), Play has the fewest playoff wins and fewest championships. Let's not that take away from the nutty record Play has and the 8 straight division titles he earned - the longest streak by any team. Dealing with boredom seems to be Play's biggest enemy as he's decided to tear down a perennial contender and rebuild. And rebuild he has. Sporting the #1 system right now, Chicago should be in a good spot over the next couple seasons to jump back into the winner's circle.
