A beach bungalow chat with waldo
1. Tell us a little about yourself. I want the dirty, sexy details.
I’d prefer not to elaborate but most people that meet me would describe me as a tall glass of milk.
Yawn.
2. Moving forward, describe your plans for the upcoming season. Your squad has been rather quiet these past few seasons. When will it be your time?
The goal this year is to get above .500 and grow our fan interest. Sox fans have been fickle fools and attendance dropped for the second year in a row. Yet despite these setbacks, I am excited for what the future holds for this team. Last year we changed the face of our franchise and brought pride to the South Side with the signing of Belle, the hiring of Officer Winslow and Big Hurt winning MVP.
This year our camp will open with even more offensive explosiveness. Ray Durham is an excellent table setter, Frank and Joey are the best 3-4 combo in the game and new additions Rondell White and Jose Offerman will fill an already potent offense. Also keep your eyes peeled Magglio Ordonez, he should be ready for the Show after the spring.
As far as our time, I say one more year since our starting pitching needs one more arm and our backup catcher dimwittedly untaught himself the catching position! In 1998 I think we finish with 87 wins but come 1999, watch out, papa’s got a brand new bag!
Nice, well-detailed answer. Yeah your fan interest is in dire need of support. Lol at the backup catcher thing.
3. And to continue that, let's talk about the AL Central. One of your fellow division rivals gifted you a nice pick this season, that must have been nice. Describe your competition and make your predictions.
(I’ll answer the first past of the question in the next answer). The AL Central will be a tight race this year. My pitching will keep me from first but I think the Central will be a three headed monster between KC, MIL, and MIN, with KC ultimately coming out on top. The three team’s offenses are pretty even but KC has the best starting pitching.
As far as Cleveland, I don’t think it will be fun times there for quite some time
4. How did your draft go? You had two top 15 picks in the 1st Round. Grade your draft.
I’d give it a B+ considering what was out there. 1998’s draft class was lacking in both offensive and starting pitching depth, and the one pitcher I wanted (Buehrle) was snatched away by the dirty paws that are the Tigers. Still, the two guys I was able to land I am very content with. Barring any bar fights or torn back muscles, K-rod should develop into one of the best closers in the game and his unwavering loyalty makes him extra spicy. He won’t be assaulting any in-laws in my clubhouse with Office Winslow around.
Pat Burrell was another nice piece, the result of a pick I acquired from Milwaukee last year. I had to trade my studly #2 pitcher Wilson Alvarez for it, but the greedy bastard demanded too much money and he suffers in the clutch. Gross.
My 1998 2nd or 3rds were used to reel in Mo Vaughn, who absolutely crushes RHP but LHP not so much…
I love me some Mark Beuhrle, he would've been a great addition.
5. Let's talk about erbes. How do you feel he's done as commissioner here? Any suggestions for him?
I’m cool with the Commish. With reward camps, post pads, trade frenzies and more, he keeps things fresh and the league moving. The only thing that needs to improve is consistency. If a schedule or rule is in place, stick to it!
Erbes, that's three people calling for more consistency! Damn son.
6. Now onto danppd or johnchevy, whatever his name was. What kind of dirtbag needs to cheat in this fashion? Let's just talk about how ridiculous this was.
If Steve Phillips taught me anything, it is if you cheat, don’t get caught or if you do, don’t do it with a frumpy intern! In all seriousness, the whole situation was bizarre (especially the conversations he had with himself) and I am glad it was resolved quickly. There’s a special place in Gollum’s cave for cheats like that.
Lol nice.
7. Big Hurt had an amazing season and won the MVP. He is in his prime and his value probably couldn't be higher. Centerpiece or trade piece?
He did and he is definitely a centerpiece. Over the past two seasons I had a lot of offers for Frank but I have never liked the idea of trading him for a couple of really good, yet not brilliant prospects. A player like Thomas is a player that anchors the entire offense and someone who you can build a team around. I’d rather rebuild a team with two superstars in their prime than start from scratch with prospects.
Agreed. I'd be holding on to Frank forever if I were you. Can't imagine many prospects that I'd move him for.
8. Who are your top 5 GMs and why? How about your top 5 favorite posters as well and why?
Top GMs:
Oakland: Despite getting nailed by some horrible PDs and having a small market, Broph is sitting on a Smaug pile of gold and has the farm system to back it up.
Houston: CSC obtained Piazza, won his division, and kept the books and farm green, all in the same year. I dig it.
Florida: Aside from moderating this wonderful roundtable, I really like the job you did winning the 1997 WS with a manageable budget.
San Francisco: Putting together two 100 win seasons in a division w the Rockies is tough to argue against.
Philadelphia: I have a lot of love for this man. Always a pleasure to discuss trades with and his posts make me smile ☺
Yeah, I enjoyed winning it all too. Nice broph sighting too.
Top posters:
Steve: The wizard. Rub his head and your sim worries will wash away.
Play: Packs fire in each post and sniffed the rat from the start.
Losanglife and Ashes: Posts that give the league its heartbeat.
Erbes: He's the Commish lol
If there's one thing play hates, it's a rat.
Steve the Wizard.
9. Who is your favorite player in real life? And if he's in the league/coming into the league, what would you give for him?
Hideki Matsui hands down. A champion of class, chivalry and the clutch who isn’t afraid to get freaky. Aside from his legendary anime collection, he currently lives in my house and has never taken off his sombrero. When Godzilla hits America, the Sox are coming hard!
Oooh I had forgotten about him. Very interesting!
10. What's the weirdest thing you've ever done? Be honest now. Remember: dirty, sexy details.
I once jizzed my pants during the ACTs and still managed to ace the science section.
Nice. Though this begs the question of how? Speaking of begging the question, did you know that the term is used incorrectly? It should be raises the question in this and most commonly used context.
11. Your pitching could use some work. Any plans to remedy that? And name the top 5 pitchers you'd want on your team and a short reason why.
Starting pitching has been the Sox’s Achilles heel and it looks like it will continue that way. Adding Cormier will give our staff a lift but I don’t expect any more pitching moves until next season. We need to keep payroll below $80M until our fan interest grows.
Top 5 pitchers:
CC Sabathia
Johan Santana
Arthur Rhodes
Dwight Gooden
Pedro
Yeah the payroll will limit you for awhile.
12. If you could switch teams with anyone else in the league, which team would it be and why?
At the start of the league I would have said Indians because of the young core or but since that is no longer the case, I’d say the Astros, they’ve got nice feng shui.
Word.
13. Call out any GM right now for any reason. Did he fuck up during the year? Make a terrible pick? Maybe he just looked at you wrong. Call him out and let him know. What would you have done differently, if applicable?
Building off last answer I’d say the Indians organization, not their current GM per se since he inherited some of the mess. Why trade Manny, Lofton, and Thome and let Belle go in the primes of the careers! They could have done great things together. So sad.
Jesus. Yeah the tear down of the Indians is crazy.
14. And finally, make your predictions. Who plays in the World Series and who wins it all?
Houston vs. Yankees. New York will always be New York but Canseco puts the Astros over the top. Houston wins it all.
I think HOU has a nice chance now too with Canseco added to the midst. Sorry guys, I numbered the questions wrong and only sent waldo 14...so to make up for it, here's another good-looking woman.
