Rookie Roundtable: New Faces
Will these new rookies end up like Crosby or Bay?
1. How did you come to join the league?
Kobe: Was in BBS and UOSL with a lot of these guys and those leagues died so I came over here. Spence and play were the ones who recruited me I guess you would say though I knew about the league for a while because of BBS.
Tempfooliz: Well I was told about this league by Steve1213 and invited to join. I was in a league S.L.O.B. I took a mets team from nothing and made them a contender before the league lost some guys and it went down from there.
Greeme: I was in BBS before it died. Spencer told me about the league and later Play tried to convince me to join. After a few leagues I was in died I had some time free so I figured that I would give it a shot. I was in a baseball league once for about 5 minutes so it was really something new.
Good to know several of us are constantly looking for new people to join!
2. Have you been in other leagues before? If you have, how would you compare this league to those?
Kobe: This is my first OOTP league so can't really judge it against another OOTP league but I have been in a lot of fbb leagues. Activity wise its like bbs which is good. OOTP definitely seems more indepth than FBB which I like its fun to learn a new game.
Tempfooliz: I have been in one other league. Both leagues have their pluses and minuses. This league you can upgrade your players and reverse PD which is a good thing to a point but in this other league you just went with what you had and had to take the bad PD with the good PD....Players developed just fine without having upgrades. Took more skill to build a contender in that league. Also in that league we didnt have all the super pitchers in that league as there are here so pitching was alot more important and had more value
Greeme: Not much to compare with the first baseball league I was in because it ended so quickly. I like the activity and in that aspect it is similar to a few basketball leagues that I was in.
I've been in several other OOTP leagues from 5-14 so it'll be cool to see how these guys get on with less experience.
3. What was your first impression of the team you took over and what direction have you decided to take?
Kobe: Love the team obviously and if you look at my trades you can see Im going for it all! Brought in an ace in Mike Lincoln and a franchise outfielder in Andruw Jones. Also not done making moves to improve hopefully. The goal is to win it all this year and I think its pretty attainable. Good of chance as anyone we have Ill say.
Tempfooliz: Tempfooliz: Well the team looked pretty good but then looking at other teams it looked like the team could contend for the playoffs but wasnt going to make any noise. So seeing this I decided to work on rebuilding this team and making it my own
Greeme: Good farm system, no major league talent. On the farm we had a ton of pitchers and no real hitters. Since tanking this year will have its consequences obviously I will try to win. I have moved some of my pitchers for hitters so at least I might score some runs this year. I will need some fa luck but there are really slim pickings. I'm sure I will either strike out or sign so many people I end up in financial trouble. That Murphy and his laws.
I was given a loaded team at the beginning of the league and they got old and I didn't capitalize on moving people like I should have. You guys all look pretty good to go with just a few right moves each.
4. Who are your favorite people to deal with so far?
Kobe: Well I dont know that I really enjoy dealing with anyone lol. The Andruw Jones deal with game was actually surprisingly easy it just took him 5 hours to respond to a pm. I can say play is a bitch to deal with he doesnt tell u what he wants. So ya idk a favorite doesnt really stick out but a least favorite definitely play.#whatacunt
Tempfooliz: Everyone so far has been great to deal with. There are some that I have no chatted with.
Greeme: Kind of hard to answer since I have had 0 or 1 trades with gms since I got here. Ashes and Greg both were very easy to deal with; both deals were done very quickly and with little back and forth. The deal with Bosoxi took much longer to get done.
My favorites are probably Erbes and Play because they tend to actually try to make a deal work instead of walking away after the first round of offers.
5. Which people entertain you the most since joining?
Kobe: Answered this in my other interview but habes and steve are pretty funny. habes not as much as he use to he fell off a lot. and a dude like steve is good for sim leagues.
Tempfooliz: I have got to say that CrazyMike with those pics of the days with all the hot babes. But as far as those that post a lot play, spencer, shale, stutter, breakthewalls can have entertaining things to say, not always the best thing or most thought out stuff
Greeme: Play is usually amusing. Shale, Stutter and Steve also. I thought Nanz and Habes would be around more. Stop being lazy!!! Lol, awk.
As always I enjoy Plays shit talk and Styro's trolling. Glad Styro didn't actually leave.
6. If you could have one player in the league you don't already, what player would it be?
Kobe: Eh wish I knew all the rosters better so I might be missing someone but I'll go with Miguel Cabrera. He looks like the best young hitting prospect in the league right now. Brilliant in hits, doubles, homers and walks is unreal and good in strikeouts. Never going to give you defense or speed but should be the best hitter in the league soon. Sucks he plays in my division.
Tempfooliz: Miguel Cabrera
Greeme: That of course would entail my actually looking though the league and thinking. Ugh, I hate those types of questions. Probably Arod.
Miggy is probably the prototypical answer followed by Todd Helton. Miggy is such a stud.
7. How do you value pitching vs hitting in the league?
Kobe: It seems hitting is more valued since its harder to obtain, but you also obviously need stud pitching as well if you are going to win. But judging from trades it seems the value of none-ace SPs is pretty low while as long as you can hit you have value. So I would say its more important to stock up on good hitters since it seems you can get more trade value for them
Tempfooliz: Well obviously from only being here part of a season I have learned that hitting seems to have much more value then pitching.
Greeme: It is really hard to compare the ratings. It seems that a mix of good and avg ratings makes for a good hitter and a poor pitcher. It is all a matter of scarcity. If Erbes makes good pitchers for the draft then hitters are worth more and vice versa. There is nothing inherently better or worse about either and it is all about scarcity. Personally I had a lot more pitching to start but there are teams that had the opposite situation.
Hitting is all the rage but I still believe hitting gets you to the playoffs but pitching wins playoff games.
8. Which one of you do you think will make a World Series appearance first?
Kobe: Out of greeme, temp and myself? I would say by the looks of it right now me lol, but things could change. I have a great chance with this Expos team so hopefully I can get it done. Looks like temp is rebuilding but greeme might be trying to win soon so he might get their first who knows but hopefully I do.
Tempfooliz: I have got to say that Kobe has the best chance right now. He switched to the Expos and is going all in trying to win. I am just starting a rebuild so I will be a few years out
Greeme: I'm not sure how many people got this roundtable so I don't know what teams they have. If you take over a good team then anyone can win a world series. It seems that players will play longer here and it is easier to keep them so it is harder to build up a team. Also need a bunch of cash and pd/st luck. I hope that I can get there within 5-7 years, pretty much just want to beat kobe there.
My bet is on the Expos. Kobe has been wheeling and dealing.
9. Did you feel the draft took too long this year? What would you do to speed it up?
Kobe: Yea personally I thought it took to long but this is my first year experiencing an ootp draft so Im not sure really. To speed it up seems pretty simple don't have 2-3 hour time limits on the 2nd and 3rd rounds. One hour for 2nd round and 30 min for 3rd round sounds good and draft would get finished much quicker. But it also seemed like the mods just stopped autoing towards the end of the 2nd round really.
Tempfooliz: Draft seemed to move at a much better pace then some of the other leagues I am in. The time limits was good and were actually followed
Greeme: Yes. Only draft the first 2 rounds and then auto unless people send lists. Nobody seems interested in the 3rd round and if they are let them send a list.
I think the draft times should be reduced to similar to what Kobe said.
10. Predict the 2004 World Series match up and why do you think so?
Kobe: I think it will be Seattle and Montreal. Styro did a good job building this team Im just trying to make them bettter and hopefully win a title or two which I think we have a good chance of doing. Especially if I decide to go all out and trade all my youth. And don't know much about the AL teams but since Toronto traded me Andruw Jones ill just go with Seattle they have a lot of talent and the cap'n.
Tempfooliz: Angels and Giants
Greeme: Blue Jays over the Cubs. Game isn't around enough to mess up the team so they can get back. Play will come out ahead in all of his moves and end up at the top of the nl.
I'm going with the Mariners and Mets.
11. Greeme has made several moves in an effort to compete soon. How would you rate the trades?
Kobe: Well I'm definitely not the most qualified to speak on it since Im still learning as well, but he's made a few good ones and a few bad ones. But nothing major so its not like he's fucking himself while learning. It shouldnt take long for both of us to get everything down. I probably would have kept Verlander but he got some nice pieces and the vets said it was a good trade for him so good job.
Tempfooliz: They have been decent moves but i just dont think its enough to get it done this year at least.. Probably a few years from now
Greeme: I love to talk about myself in the third person. Greeme made 4 trades so far, mostly to get cash. For the most part they were fair trades and he moved pitching for hitting. The only trade that doesn¡¦t currently look good is the Gomez trade. Greeme really wanted a player like gomez 5 tool type. Of course when you try to get a specific player it often happens that you overpay. Give Greeme time and he will figure everything out.
I think he's figuring it out as he goes and doing a better job than others have.
12. This league prides itself on the level of daily activity. Do you think you're a good fit for the league long term?
Kobe: Yea I have like 1000 posts in a month somehow lol. Im in college and have a part time job so I have a good bit of time so activity isn't a problem at the moment. Its been really fun learning a new game and BBS and UOSL were meh for a long time so its good being in a really active league again I think thats another reason Ive been so active. Hopefully the league keeps going for a long time and keeps up the activity level as well
Tempfooliz: I am a good fit. I am always willing to talk trades and I have good experience in OOTP leagues. I participate in pickems and any interview/round table questions
Greeme: Yup.
I'm loving the activity out of all of these guys and I hope they keep it up!
