Were gonna highlight and break down 10 of the most important recent trades. Pick a winner and a loser. Tell us why. Give us the most valuable overall piece in each deal
1. BOS/CLE - This was a vetoed trade but it still deserves discussion.
Red Sox sends:
#56 Trevor Hoffman, Closer, 33 yrs, Boston Red Sox
$5 million In Game Cash
Indians sends:
CLE 2004 2nd
Nanz - I mean it is what it is…. Obviously a friend deal without a doubt. Hoffman is old, about to be 34 years old and he’s gonna be under contract through 2004. It’s a dump for Boston because they need to clear some payroll and adding Hoffman to the Indians adds nothing of value to them but just another contract LOL. A second round pick is pretty funny tho because there is no reason he should give that up considering he is taking on that. I will say the 5 mil is solid but eh his ratings will start dropping like flies. Just another deal between these two guys… nothing more to say.
Steve - - It's vetod, so I don't really care to much, but I'll still say that the most valuable piece of the deal is Hoffman...I love draft picks, and a 2nd is nice, but Hoffman will have 2 more solid years, and Cleveland will be able to stomach the last year of his deal when he's not worthy of his salary. Cleveland wins the deal (if it would have went down).
Play - Boston won this trade, since it didn't go through at the deadline. Hoffman has been pretty damn good since the trade deadline and has been a big part of Boston's resurgance into the wild card lead. Break lucked up with this voided trade. I'm tired of this friend trade shit as well. Break is always looking for DRowe/Shale and now Stutter to bail him out. Break has been able to keep his team intact because of the friend shit that goes on with those guys. I doubt it happens but hopefully Darrel doesn't get caught up in that shit, he seems like a good guy.
Winner: Red Sox
Me - Boston wins but its close. CLE needed some pen help. Hoffman isn't overpaid. And he got cash. Wouldve helped CLE alot. DRowe needs to pull the trigger on more trades if he ever wants to get out of 4th place.
2. ATL/PHI
Braves sends:
#94 John Olerud, First Base, 33 yrs, Atlanta Braves
Phillies sends:
2003 ATL 1st
2004 ATL 2nd
#41 Nate Robertson, Starting Pitcher, 23 yrs, Philadelphia Phillies
#34 Marty Cordova, Rightfield, 32 yrs, Philadelphia Phillies
Nanz - I love the value that Philly gets here without a doubt. Those 2 prospects are nice real nice but nothing great. I get that Nate is a 5 star pitcher and solid across the board but theres nothing great there for him to be a number 1 or 2 on a good staff. The picks are nice but they hold way more value for ATL because they can control what spot they will be so that’s nice. Olreud is pretty damn sick he is 33 but he is nasty so he is by far the most valuable piece in this deal. This is still a solid package for ATL tho for what they are trying to do. Winner: Philly Loser: ATL
Steve - - I already extensively commented on this trade, but I think Buhner made out tremendously here...got 4 valuable pieces for a guy that's essentially a platoon-type...he's not capable of hitting southpaws consistently, so...Olerud is the most valuable piece here, but barely...he's got a few years left, and Philly will have Roberton and 2 draft picks for the future.
Play - Philly overvalues his players in my opinion but it seemed to work this time. I love it for Philly, Robertson is 24 years old but he has the talents to be a good pitcher. I could see him developing pretty fast over the next year. Philly also got a first and second round pick out of the deal. Pretty amazing value IMO. Olerud is very solid and Atlanta did get the lefty that he really needed. I just think he overpaid. No big issues with it though, Atlanta is always in the race of the division Crown so those are late picks in both rounds.
Winner: Philly
Me - I like this for ATL. Its pretty nice value for Olerud but I dont really like Robertson at all. Bats are so hard to find too. Pretty nice for ATL overall.
3. SD/COL
Padres send:
#54 Jason Middlebrook, Reliever, 26 yrs, Colorado Rockies
SD 2003 1st
Rockies send:
#8 Cliff Floyd, Leftfield, 28 yrs, San Diego Padres
This is a tough call for me because Floyd like like EHHH sooooo yeah. I’m gonna go ahead and assume that my friend haberino will without a doubt increase his talents and make him even better. He is 28 years old too which is niceeee so that’s def a plus. He is a doubles machine but that batting avg is like LOL. I think that even with all those things against him that pick should be pretty low I would assume. Hanes is already .500 this year and should be getting better and better each year with his prospects coming up and getting better. Winner: SD Loser: Colorado
Steve - -It really all depends where Habes 1st lands...having said that, I think his team will be solid to the point where that pick won't be costly...so I think Habes wins the deal, and he gets the most valuable piece in Cliff Floyd...I don't think Floyd has been TIAd, so he could be an interesting piece for Habes.
Play - At first I hated it for Habes but i actually love the deal for him now. Floyd's contract is a great value for a team in a small market. Floyd hasn't been that productive this season but he will turn it around next season IMO. That first round pick has potential but its in a shitty ass draft. Shale should have kept Floyd, he's been talking all this shit about competing but then he turns around and trade two good players(Tony Clark and Floyd) on cheap contracts, that are pretty damn good fits for his park.
Winner: Padres
Me - I like this for COL. They need more young talent and to lose as much salary as possible. Shale needs to load up on Free Agents and draft picks. Get as much free talents as possible.
4. SF/PHI
Giants send:
#26 Marco Scutaro, Second Base, 25 yrs, San Francisco Giants
#2 Greg Norton, Third Base, 29 yrs, San Francisco Giants
SF 2004 2nd
SF 2004 3rd
2.5 mil board cash
Phillies send:
#59 Brian S Giles, Leftfield, 30 yrs, Philadelphia Phillies
Nanz - This is a nice deal for the Giants no doubt. I get it that Giles plays no defense and has no power etc but he is 30 years old and has some nice hitting tools if you know what I mean LOL nah nothing there lol. Anyway, yeah I like Norton and Scutaro they are good players and I think Scut can be very valuable with that defense and if he can get some TIA(B)(C) or whatever… he could be a really good top of the lineup type of guy. The board cash is key too because you know I love me board cash and I love it some more! But yeah although it’s a very nice package I would have to go with Giles being the best player in the deal without a question. So because of that I have to go with Winner: San Fran Loser: Philly
Steve - - Giles isn't impressive at all. I don't know...I think getting board cash, and 2 draft picks is nice. Norton is whatever...he's a backup...same case with Scutaro. Spence gets the best piece in Giles, but that's really not saying much...I think Buhner takes this deal getting the board cash/draft picks.
Play - Philly got more for a 32 year old John Olerud than they got for Giles. Love this trade for the Giants. Giles is a huge upgrade and he's pretty damn cheap for next season. Scutaro is a solid spect though. Could be pretty good with a TIA upgrade to his hits.
Winner: Giants
Me - I love Giles. I dont really like anything I dealt. I really wanted to add as many reasonable priced bats as possible this season. Got Giles, Greer, Fryman and Rodriguez. Love them.
5. CHI(A)/COL
White Sox send:
#33 James Baldwin, Starting Pitcher, 30 yrs, Colorado Rockies
CHI(A) 2003 1st
Rockies send:
#26 Ryan Hawblitzel, Reliever, 30 yrs, Chicago (A) White Sox
$4.5 million board cash
Nanz - Pretty straight forward trade so I’ll keep this nice and short because there isn’t much to talk about in this here bad boy. 4.5 mil for a late late late first round pick? Does that sound like a good ratio? I think so. So for here I’m gonna go with Winners: CHI Losers: COL. This is mainly because I rather have that much money for a playoff run and that’s what waldo is doing right now. Dig it.
Steve - CHI-town cuts salary, and gains a chunk of board cash...having said that, board cash isn't a problem for Shale, and so acquiring a 1st (the most valuable piece in this deal) is a win for him. The Pick will be in the 20s, but nonetheless it's better then anything in this deal.
Play - Like this trade for the Rockies. I know 2003 is a shitty draft but a first round pick(albit a late one) is pretty damn good value. If I knew about the pick being available, I probably would have overpaid by 2mil or so for it. Nice trade for the Rockies.
Winner: Colorado
Me - Another nice pickup for Shale. He made some nice deals down the stretch. He needs as many assets as possible. Deal for bad contracts, trade solid guys for picks. Just get assets. Good job by COL.
6. CHI(N)/COL
Cubs send:
#18 Shea Hillenbrand, First Base, 26 yrs, Colorado Rockies
Rockies send:
#41 Alan Embree, Reliever, 31 yrs, Chicago (N) Cubs
BOS 2002 3rd
Nanz - Meh nothing trade here again of course. I like Shea a lot though… if he can get his hits to good and his defense up to B he could be a very nice player for any team. Embree is eh, alright I guess? I know Play was looking for some arms tho and he is just another OK middle reliever. The pick to me has really no vaue that’s for sure so yeah I don’t wanna say it but I have to… Losers: CHI Winners: COL. Let’s see if Shea has work put on him because I like him … maybe I should trade for him LOL nah I have overbay YEEEEEEEEE
Steve - - Shale wins this deal, too...Hillenbrand becomes an interesting player (assuming of course) once he gets TIAd in hit...once that happens, it's a clear win for Shale...Embree is nothing, and a 3rd round pick is a crapshoot...Hillenbrand is clearly the most valuable piece here.
Play - Colorado wins this trade. If they add a TIA to Hillenbrand's hits. He could be a very productive player in Coors. Embree hasn't even played a game for the Cubs(blame OOTP Embree is listed in the Cubs bullpen). Rockies come out on top pretty easily.
Winner: Rockies
Me - Shale wins again. For as much shit as he takes he ran out and made some gfreat trades and came up big during the frenzy. Amazing job by him. Hillenbrand should be a very good Coors hitter.
7. PIT/SF
Pirates send:
10 million In-Game Cash
Giants sends:
FLA 2002 2nd
SF 2003 2nd
SF 2003 4th
Nanz - Yeah so these trades are like meh? Nothing to see here lol. I mean 10 mil in game cash is lot and 2 second rounders seems like a steep price alone so I don’t know who I would judge this one. Can I make them both Losers for such a boring trade LOL nah jk I know spence needs money so I get it and if was willing to caash out picks… good deal for both so yeah Winner: SF Loser: PIT its t-dog so yeah I’ll pick him winning everytime 9/10 times
Steve - I win this deal...acquiring two 2nd round picks is nice...money isn't an issue for me so it was no big deal. Spence needed in-game cash so he makes out here, but in terms of value I came out on top...I'll say this years FLA 2nd is the most valuable piece...
Play - Stupid trade to discuss. But I'm always a fan of acquring picks for In-Game Cash. Pirates have a lot of cash, so its basically free picks for them.
Winner: Pirates
Me - I alays like to see how people view my trades. Obviously in game cash isnt important. Unless youre in my situation and its immensely important. Deals like this allow me to contend another year. Ill give up a couple of mediocre spects for that.
8. CHI(N)/CIN
Cubs send:
#42 Jeff Bailey, Catcher, 22 yrs, Cincinnati Reds
#20 Dan Uggla, Second Base, 21 yrs, Cincinnati Reds
#41 Jesus Feliciano, Rightfield, 22 yrs, Cincinnati Reds
#37 Derek Casella, Starting Pitcher, 21 yrs, Cincinnati Reds
CHI(N) 2002 1st
CHI(N) 2003 1st
CHI(N) 2004 1st
Reds send:
#22 Lance "Big Puma" Berkman, First Base, 25 yrs, Chicago (N) Cubs
Nanz - Man this is a no brainer for me… Lance is by far the best player in this deal without a question.. like golly this to me is a borderline rape. Yeah he gets a nice package of OK talent to fill his farm system? But come on you have to get at least 1 stud prospect rather than all those meh ones. Yeah this is a huge win for the cubs without question. The picks are also nice but eh not a fan of this trade for the reds at all. Also, did I forget to mention that this guy is 25 years old? LOL damn damn damn lets hope those guys get some solid PDs for cincy LOL Winner: CHI Loser: Reds. Biggest trade here.
Steve - God, I don't even want to analyze this deal...it feels like it's already been picked apart. Clearly Stutter loses this deal...he's an idiot, and doesn't have a clue on how to really deal big-time talent. None of those Cub picks will mean anything. They'll be in the 22-30 range...Bailey/Uggle can be good players if they get TIAd, but that's not the type of talent you want back in return for a big-time player in Berkman...
Play - Hard to say who won this trade but I'm going to go with Chicago. Berkman is a "franchise" type player. He's the type of player every team needs. I do feel Stutter took a lot of flack for this trade. Sutter received a shitload in return. Once he adds TIA's to Bailey and Uggla, they both will be legit all-star caliber prospects. Feliciano has a chance to be a very solid outfielder for the Reds. I could see him leading off as well once his running speed is TIA'd. Three first round picks, are three first round picks, no matter where they land. I remember people hating the Sosa deal(http://bbsblthree.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=trades&action=display&thread=218) for me but in the end, I came out on top of that deal. Stutter will more than likely win this deal in the long run.
Also where was the backlash, with this trade?
bbsblthree.proboards.com/index.cg....lay&thread=1058
It's essentially the same type of trade. Posada is a catcher, which is a premium position IMO and he was the better player at the time. Yet nobody really said shit there. Majority of those players were 3.5 stars as well. Erbes added TIA's to a few of those players(Burrell, Gonzalez and Cunnane) and Styro added a TIA to Kearns, and look at those guys now.
Winner: Chicago
Me - Classic Play. Just come out and say you raped. Lame to even argue it isnt a rape. Stutter needs to step up big time. Pretty horrible job thus far for him.
9. DET/CHI(A)
Tigers send:
#17 Julian Tavarez, Starting Pitcher, 28 yrs, Chicago (A) White Sox
3 million In Game Cash
White Sox send:
CHI(A) 2002 1st
CHI (A) 2002 2nd
CHI (A) 2003 3rd
#17 Jose Mendoza, Second Base, 24 yrs, Baltimore Orioles
1 million Board Cash
Nanz - This trade is tough for me because originally I would have said CHI winner no doubt but looking at it a little longer its closer than I thought. Tavarez is a good pitcher no doubt but I don’t think there’s that special factor there…. Then again he has an 8 in runs so he must be damn good. I don’t know I just like to see a top pitcher with runs with higher talents but I guess its good. Also, those picks are gonna be so late that it really doesn’t matter because anyone DET drafts with those picks wont be better. Also, I would like for Tavarez’s duration to be higher but who can complain… ive got Soriano LOL. Anyway the more I think about it the more I like it again for the white sox a ton LOLZ oh well Winner: CHI LOSER: DET. Oh and it helps that waldo is winning the WS.
Steve - Waldo gets the best piece in Tavares...but he gave up a lot for him. I don't think Tavares gets them over the hump...his SP is his Achilles heel...and as good as that offense is, I don't think the SP is good enough. I think Detroit does well here, but I didn't like him spinning Mendoza for that SP from Balty...didn't get that. Either way, I give the slight edge to DET...but it's a pretty fair deal.
Play - Like this deal for the Tigers. He easily win this IMO. Tavarez is an overpaid scrub(Sorry PB). Tigers received a first in a loaded draft draft, a solid prospect in Mendoza and he dumped that awful contract of Tavarez.
Winner: Detroit
Me - I dislike Tavarez. Hes decent, but he isnt special. Great trade for CHI. 3 picks and board cash. Wow.
10. NY(A)/STL
Yankees send:
#35 Pat "The Bat" Burrell, Leftfield, 24 yrs, St. Louis Cardinals
#6 Ross Gload, Rightfield, 25 yrs, St. Louis Cardinals
#57 Marcos Suarez, Starting Pitcher, 21 yrs, St. Louis Cardinals
#22 Josh Pearce, Reliever, 23 yrs, St. Louis Cardinals
#86 Ryan Klesko, First Base, 30 yrs, St. Louis Cardinals
NY(A) 2002 2nd
NY(A) 2002 3rd
NY(A) 2003 1st
Cardinals send:
#60 Ichiro "Wizard" Suzuki, Leftfield, 27 yrs, New York (A) Yankees
#85 T.J. Mathews, Reliever, 31 yrs, New York (A) Yankees
#3 Pablo Ozuna, Centerfield, 26 yrs, New York (A) Yankees
Nanz - Damn damn damn this deal is HOT HOT HOT! I mean lord! That’s a lot of stuff there! Ichiro is the best player in the deal no question about it… the man is a fucking stud. He is just so good and still soo young he is the type of player I want LOL. Anyway, on the other hand the package he gave up is a ton tho like mama mama there are some nice pieces there. Gload and Burrel are so nice like cake I dig it. Also, Suazrez needs his homers upgraded but other than that he should also be very good. I dig this trade because it has a lot of good stuff moving around which is nice Winner: YANKS Losers: STL. There has to be a loser but both teams did very well… not to mention that Ichiro was gonna leave STL anyway so yeah this is goodstuff.
Steve - I'd give a slight nod to Bosoxi...Erbes gave up a lot of pieces...I'm really only a fan of Pat Burrell, but some of these guy could get some PD, and become even better players. I'm not a fan of Suarez...he won't cut it unless his HRs get TIA...but even then, I think he won't be a good SP in the Big Leagues...The draft picks are what makes me like the trade more for Bosoxi...Erbes gave up a handful of assets for a great leadoff hitter, but his system is cleaned out now...and he doesn't have many draft picks to replenish it...obviously, Ichiro is the best piece. He's an outstanding leadoff hitter.
Play - I like this trade for both. Yankees add a bonafied stud in Ichiro, the Cards add some very solid pieces to help with whatever their doing. Burrell is an everyday player. Suarez needs a TIA to his homeruns for me to even consider im a legit prospect. I like Ross Gload as well. I do feel the Cards need to pick a lane and stick with it. I hated that Corey Patterson trade for them.
Winner: Both teams.
Me - Like this for both. Erbes wanted to up deal. Cardinals need to be patient and build slowly. Need youth and cheap good players. Works out well for both.
1. BOS/CLE - This was a vetoed trade but it still deserves discussion.
Red Sox sends:
#56 Trevor Hoffman, Closer, 33 yrs, Boston Red Sox
$5 million In Game Cash

7. PIT/SF
