1. Jose Guillen has just 46 walks in his first 192 games, but he's posted a .952 OPS in that span. On paper he resembles a lot of guys who don't approach that production. His defense is also a liability. Is he a franchise player?
- Yeah, a lot of guys don't produce like he does according to what his ratings are...but in some cases, some guys completely exceed what they are talent-wise. He's one of them, and he's a big-time hitter. He actually, probably, draws more walks then what he should...so I'm okay with his walks. I think he has actually exceeded...plus, I'm more of a Walk/K ratio guy...if your walks and Ks are close, then I'm cool. His defense isn't much of a concern for me per say...as long as he rakes, which he has done EVER SINCE he has entered the league, then I don't really have much of an issue with that aspect.
He's not a franchise player...he's a damn good player, but not that guy I NEED to build my team around with...either way, I'm happy to have him on my team...he's been on my block, but I haven't been wowed or received the right offer so he'll stay with my club until that happens.
Pretty realistic assessment, though I think weighing walks against Ks is a little arbitrary for a hitter.
2. How soon do you expect to compete? Think you can compete with the Cubs for a division title within the next three years, or what will it take to get your team to that level?
- I would say definitely not next year...possibly the following year we get back to respectability...3 years from now, we SHOULD have a really good team...it all comes down to how quick some of our guys develop...either way, I'm excited on the path we are going towards. When I took over that team...it wasn't a good team in terms of assets I could deal to revamp my system. I still don't know how I got a few winning years out of that team, including a near division championship. We've been nailing a lot of the drafts, and have accumulated a lot of picks to further expedite the process.
Regarding the question about competing with the Cubs...I most certainly think we can (in year 3)...but there's no denying how good of a team he has, and will have for a long time...so we're gunna have to deal with him regardless.
A lot of your prospects look near-ready, but yeah, unless something big happens, it looks like you'll need three seasons to compete for the division.
3. Better GM and why: Play or Spencer.
- Tough question...but I think it boils down to championships...Spence has 2, and I can't put Play ahead of Spence until he wins one. I think Play has done a marvelous job, though...he's got a solid system...obviously has a great pitching staff, and his team is pretty damn young, so he'll have a good team for quite some time.
Spence use to be in SLOB, and I remember him to be a very good GM, so I've always been impressed with him. He's won on average 104 games (with 2 championships) since the league has started...just unreal. My nod goes to Spence...
Fair enough, though I think Play is much better-positioned for long-term success, and I think he assembles the more valuable pieces.
4. Who won the Cardinals/Yankees trade, why, and by how much?
- I'd give a slight nod to Bosoxi...Erbes gave up a lot of pieces...I'm really only a fan of Pat Burrell, but some of these guy could get some PD, and become even better players. I'm not a fan of Suarez...he won't cut it unless his HRs get TIA...but even then, I think he won't be a good SP in the Big Leagues...The draft picks are what makes me like the trade more for Bosoxi...Erbes gave up a handful of assets for a great leadoff hitter, but his system is cleaned out now...and he doesn't have many draft picks to replenish it.
Meh. I love Ichiro but I agree. If Ichiro had good walks or doubles and were locked up on a more reasonable salary I'd love him, but as is, it's an overpay.
5. Are the White Sox the best team in BBSBL? Do you give the A's any chance to repeat?
- No...not at all...they got the best offense, but that's it. Their overall pitching isn;t good enough to win in the Playoffs...I'd take the A's and Yankees over them at the very least...I definitely give the A's a shot at repeating...they're balanced, they got the same team essentially...no reason they can't win it all. The Playoffs are a crapshoot anyway, and they're going to making it so they have a very legit shot.
Tavarez was a great addition, but yeah, Chicago's pitching isn't dominant, so I think they're beatable. I think Oakland repeats.
6. The Rangers have by far the best player in the league, but are under .500. Should Don deal Griffey? Tell me one team that needs to acquire him and what a fair deal would be.
- Not yet...I think he should try to give the team an extra year...there's been some hype for his team, but they are young, and they weren't ready...they jumped the gun in the previous season...they have regressed, and some of his key guys like Mulder/Suazo/Soderstrom/Fultz/Belle haven't lived up...if you noticed his whole rotation has let him down essentially, and that's really the MAIN reason they have regressed big time...I'd say give it another year, but if he can't put together a 90+ win year, then he definitely needs to consider trading Griffey.
What would it take? I would think if Don were to deal him RIGHT NOW...it would take at least 2 big time prospects plus draft picks...at least two 1sts...Styro could definitely land Griffey...he's got guys like Fogg/Hanley/Wang plus picks...I think Toronto could make a run at him if they wanted too...and I think they make the most sense as well. They don't have a very good OF...Lampman/Jodie/Teix plus some draft picks could get a deal done perhaps. It would really make Toronto a heck of a team.
Texas isn't good enough to not keep an open block for Griffey offers, but it should wait for the offseason. I doubt anyone's willing to pay what it'd take though. Amazing player.
7. Which team has the best future?
- Not counting me and I'm not going to include contenders (Montreal would have been my pick)...I'll say Colorado! Yeah, right. I'll go with your team...San Diego! Like I said, I think you raped Bosoxi in that deal. Sizemore will be a monster of a leadoff hitter...plus you got a nice, solid 1B in Morneau...your team is stacked at SP...Zito/Bedard/Webb/Bootcheck/Valenzuela. You also have a very nice catcher coming up, too.
I'd say I'd give honrable mentions to the Detroit and the New York Mets...Detroit has got a shit load of talented bats, and the Mets have great arms, with some nice bats as well.
I think it's Montreal. We'll see how my hitters develop. Getting two hitters for Patterson was important.
8. What's one move you wish you could undo? Why?
- The trade of Cordova...maybe. Improving Cordova's duration would have gotten him better value...no one wanted to trade me top assets because of his duration, even though he was a top 5 SP. Either way, I don't regret anything...I don't sit there saying I wish I could have undone that or what have you...not yet anyway.
For me it's dealing Zito for Lee, though I'm not sure either of my deals involving Reyes were so hot.
9. Who's one GM who doesn't deserve his spot in this league? Bonus points if you don't name Nanz.
- Stutter...he sucks. Worst GM I've seen in quite some time. It all started with that CC Sabathia trade...what a fool. The Berkman deal might have been worse. Either way, he might have one good asset on that team...that's it. I'm not joking. That team is so bad right now.
He's horrible and clueless and annoying and doesn't care. Hope he gets fired.
10. Tell us a little bit about yourself. What's your sim league background? Every last detail of your personal life?
- I've done SLOB and SLOR (Basketball)..plus the sportsfix...I'm in college...I play dek (it's a type of surface) hockey for an awesome...trying to make it it 5 champions in the past 6 seasons. I play some indoor soccer with a bunch of my high school dudes...Use to play baseball back in the day, too. Live in South Jersey, and I'm all about Philly sports. I work a lot, like most of you folks...that's really it...nothing much to add here.
You get a load of Cole Hamels bro? Smells.
- Yeah, a lot of guys don't produce like he does according to what his ratings are...but in some cases, some guys completely exceed what they are talent-wise. He's one of them, and he's a big-time hitter. He actually, probably, draws more walks then what he should...so I'm okay with his walks.
