BBSBL Top 75 Value (50-36)
In this next edition we will be looking at the 50-36 players on the Top 75 Value list. Keep in mind that there is a such a small difference between spots 60-40ish so it was very difficult to do these first two parts. Don't get too upset if you feel your #57 guy should be #43. Just sit back and enjoy!
The List (Continued):
50. SP Greg Maddux
I think the oldest guy on the list. Maddux is just so good. He's been doing it big for years. He's up there in age now, and makes a lot of money, but he's been earning it. He's having a stellar season this year, definitely a Cy Young contender. It'll be very interesting to see if he can get to 300 wins for his career. Say he gets 10 more this year, he'll need just under 60 to get it for his career. Might be tough.
49. SS Rafael Furcal
Furcal is a sick switch-hitting SS and would be a leadoff stud if that spot wasn't already occupied for New York. Only 21 years old, Furcal has been having a ROY-type season so far. He also plays 2B equally as well as he plays SS. Currently on pace for a Gold Glove. His Walks could use a little work, but that's really the only downside I can see.
48. LF Lance Berkman
Big Puma is quietly have a breakout year in his second season. His AVG, OBP, and OPS have skyrocketed, and his talent ratings are nasty, of course. Having a switch-hitting power guy like Berkman is awesome. He could very well be a lot higher on this list considering he's only 23. The Reds are fading in their division this season, but Berkman has been doing his part and more. I wouldn't be surprised to see Berkman competing for not only the MVP in a few seasons, but probably going for a few triple crowns as well.
47. SP Erik Bedard
20 year-old lefty with G/G/G/B/G. Sounds pretty good to me. Recently being shipped from Florida to San Diego, Bedard has all the tools to be an ace. Good duration, solid intangibles, and pretty good ratings in his first season, the sky's the limit for Bedard. Only thing holding him back is his health. Being injury prone is tough, but if he can stay on the field, I'd imagine he becomes one of the top pitchers in the NL.
46. RF JD Drew
JD Drew probably doesn't belong this high. He is struggling this year big time, very indicative of a sophomore slump, but his talent is amazing. G/G/A/G/G/B is sick. 23 years old, great in the clutch, and a pretty good defender. I expect Drew to pick it up to close the season, and have a breakout year next season. To me, Drew's ceiling is through the roof, so I don't expect him to be any lower than this in value for some time.
45. DH Jason Giambi
Giambi has been improving season after season, and he's in his prime with Brilliants in HRs/Walks and amazing ratings there. Couple that with improving at his Average, and you've got a serious talent here. He's DH right now, but can play 1B as well. He is one of the league's premier sluggers and probably has a solid 6 or 7 years of production left. I'd like to see him get his OPS higher, but he really doesn't do a whole lot bad.
44. C Ryan Doumit
Might seem a little high, but you're going to see a lot of Catchers higher than you'd imagine. The league is hurting for Catchers, so having an 18 year old switch-hitting prospect with G/G/P/G/A/G talent ratings is pretty damn nice. Habes nabbed his franchise Catcher in the recent blockbuster deal with the Marlins. He was bumped to AAA recently after dominating AA and he doesn't seem to be slowing down. I expect Doumit to be in the Majors in a few seasons and be one of the top Catchers in the league.
43. SP Mark Buehrle
I don't misspell a player's name more than I do Mark Buehrle. Asides from the annoying last name, the dude is a complete stud. Amazing intangibles, great ratings in his second season, all the good talent ratings you'd want, plus top notch duration and groundball percentage. He'll probably be ready for the Majors next season, I'd imagine his Runs will shoot up pretty soon. Going to be another top arm for Montreal's pitching staff.
42. C Victor Martinez
Another stud switch-hitting Catcher prospect, V-Mart is a little further on in his development than Doumit. He's been in the league for four years, so I'm not sure how much more he'll benefit from being in the Minors, but we all know Cleveland has no interest in bringing people up, so I'm sure he'll be there another few years. He's still got a little ways to go before he'll be effective, but I'm sure once he actually does make it to the Majors, he'll be a top Catcher in the AL.
41. 1B Jeff Bagwell
Jeff Bagwell has been having a MONSTER year. He's almost at his HR total for last season and is posting another >1.000 OPS year. He's slugging at a stupid rate, and with his amazing Walks rating/talent, he is an on base machine. He is a huge reason the Astros are leading the league in runs scored and home runs. The Piazza, Canseco, and Bagwell trio is scary, and the Astros have come roaring back to tie it up with the Cubs. That'll likely be a division race down to the last game. This may be Bagwell's BBSBL MVP year, if Walker and Coors Field will allow it.
40. RF Endy A Chavez
The fake Endy Chavez is looking real nice. G/A/A/G/A/B with good speed and amazing defense, Chavez could be the real deal. Only thing hurting him is his slow development and lack of HR improvement. Cubs are in no real rush to bring him to the Majors though, considering they have the OF pretty well locked up, so I'm guessing they will bank on him developing and let him take his time. There no real reason not to, he's still only 21 years old. Just imagine if we combined the real Endy Chavez with the fake one? Sick.
39. SP Carl Pavano
Carl Pavano is probably too high. He doesn't sim as well as you like, gives up 4+ ERA, and has a terrible groundball percentage. Still, his talent is undeniable, and his ratings are sick. He's still only 23, so I'd imagine he'll pick it up to close this season and likely have a pretty good year next year. He needs to. His WHIP is solid, but for some reason just doesn't produce like you'd like him to. I think he'll get it together soon.
38. 1B Mike Sweeney
Might look very high at first glance, but don't be fooled, Sweeney's value is at Catcher. He's one of the best young Major-ready Catchers in the league, and he's only 25. Recently signed to an extension, Sweeney should have a good amount of value around the league. He's put up good numbers every year. The only thing we are waiting on is for his HRs to pick up. He has Good talent, but hasn't developed much in that department, though has improved each year so far (already on pace to double last season's totals). Someone should snatch him up from KC and play him where he belongs.
37. CF Juan Pierre
I have him pretty high, which may seem a little homerish but hear me out. He will likely be the top leadoff guy of the future. He will probably be ready for the Majors next year so we'll all get a chance to seem him in action. He's been tearing up the Minors, and with a bump to his stealing, he may be a contender for the league leader in steals as well. Good intangibles, amazing defense, he doesn't have a lot of downsides, in fact his only downside is his lack of power, so he'll never be a high OPS guy.
36. CF Corey Patterson
And as good of a lead-off hitter Pierre may become, here's a guy who could be better. Patterson could go either way, he could be a big time lead-off guy, or middle of the lineup power guy. The little Corey Patterson has big time talent in Homers, which could be very scary when coupled with his Good Talent in hitting and awesome speed. Also a very good defender, the only weakness is his ability to draw Walks. Probably not going to take pitchers deep into the count, but is still going to do a lot of damage. As high as I am on Pierre, even I can't say he'll be better than Patterson for sure.
